I have phase c. but not DIC, too expensive as of now. I have obtained near DIC results with a combination of polarization and oblique illumination, so much so I'm questioning the advantage (to myself) of DIC. Any ideas?

Thanks for your interesting comment! As you probably know, before phase contrast, oblique illumination was the most useful way to increase contrast in material of low contrast and condenser holders were designed to facilitate oblique illumination such that you could move the condenser horizontally to achieve oblique illumination. I would be interested to learn more about the details of your combination of oblique illumination and polarization. BTW, I lucked out big time in being able to obtain a microscope equipped with DIC optics on eBay for a very reasonable price because, I think, the seller did not really know the value of what they were selling.

@tjlmicro6508 By offsetting a wedged shaped stop in the filter holder, using high light intensity and adjusting polarization I can get the 3D effect along with good contrast of protist's interior. It appears very much like the clips of DIC online. What scope did you get the great deal on?
