      I believe this is one of the only fully functional Xerox 8010 Stars so its a nice treat to be able to use it! And the Lisa was super nice as well

    Back in the 1980s I worked with both the Xerox 8010, and the 6085 for about 6 years total. There was a next program loaded onto them called Versatec EXPERT (Drafting), part of their Engineering CAD software that also had PC board design. I cannot seem to find much information on, but for it time, was really powerful. Even to the point where you could load a picture into a drawing in order to trace it. I would have to reboot the computer to switch between Viewpoint and EXPERT CAD.
    It seems like I remember there was either GUI improvements, or we had all of the options for such things as similar to todays Copy, Paste, and also Drag and Drop functionality. Also, the 6085 went to one of the first optical mouse - Though needed a specific patterned 8" X 7" Aluminum grid pad.
    You have brought back SO many memories (and nightmares)..........LOL Interesting the keyboard you have the for the 8010 I've never seen before. Seems like a transition model from the original "clunky" 8010, and the modern "sleek" 6085 keyboard.
    PS - I hope you never get the dreaded system crash error code of 915, or 935. Sometimes a full system reload was needed.

    Wow. That Xerox was really impressive for 1981!
    Those 8" floppies are pretty crazy, too.

      The size of the Xerox Computer case is something to behold super heavy and the resolution of the monitor was very clear in person the camera does it no justice

    My father worked with one of these in the old days. Always amazed me that the Star had a 17" 1024x768 (roughly) pixel display in 1981. That wouldn't become the norm for personal computers for another 15 years or so.

    Another 4-bit wonder. 'Only' 1 font, because as Larry Tesler himself said in 2017 it was about message not loudness. It took a while for me to clock the Covid mask, lol, so infatuated I am by the Xerox! Thanks Dr Guillotine! You've made my month! The AMD Am2900 microprocessor, as used in Apollo/Domain workstations. A true Risc Architecture. ⚛ 💞 💫

    We had the 8010 in our Binghamton Xerox field office right up until the late 90's. When we upgraded the memory to 56K that was huge lol. When we switched over to Windows 3.1 we all thought Windows clunky in comparison. It was in color though.

      Xerox Star was introduced for the IBM PC in color around the time the Intel 80386 was in use. It also ran on the Sun Sparc 10.

    Very nice video, I'm jealous, as I badly want a Xerox Star too :-) Just a little correction: the Star isn't the first commercial computer with a GUI, The Apollo with Aegis in 1980 and the Peq with Accent in 1980 too preceded him, as the Star came on the market in 1981. But the Star is the first commercial computer with a full Desktop metaphore. the Apollo had a windowing system but there was no desktop, and the Perq was like the Alto : a mono task system.

    • @drguillotine7485
      @drguillotine7485  3 роки тому

      Well what we meant was Xerox was the first with Alto 1973 and this was a later and updated release 1981

      @stephanepitteloud1849 3 роки тому +1

      @@drguillotine7485 Yes, if you speak about Xerox as a builder, but the Star isn't a updated Alto, it's a whole new computer. They used the Alto in the first stages to develop the OS but then switched on the dedicaced hardware when it was ready. You can read that on this excellent page describing the history of the developpement of the Star :guidebookgallery.org/articles/thexeroxstararetrospective. Therefore, the Alto is the first Computer with a GUI available in other form than a concept, the Perq basicaly the same but commercial (the Alto was never commercialised), the Apollo was the first with a windowing system, and the Star is the first with a real desktop metaphore. And this is in my opinion the most cool thing about this computer :-)
      excerpt from the page: "Since the machine upon which Star ran was developed in parallel with the software, it was not available early-on for use as a software development platform. Early prototyping and development was done on Altos and successor research machines developed at PARC. Though the Mesa language ran on these machines, development aids for Mesa programmers were lacking."

    I *am* surprised that it had the hourglass cursor, though. Interesting that the Macintosh team chose to use a wristwatch instead.
    4:41 Looking at this at quarter-speed, I can tell that they're drawing the entire circle in a very serial way (drawn from one point and turning it 360°). Bill Atkinson's quickdraw routines were much more efficient, copying portions of the calculated circle at least four times.
    6:31 Looking at this frame-by-frame, it doesn't seem that LisaGraf had the same level of optimization as QuickDraw

      The 8010 was so slow though. But this was a time when the Hardware had not caught up with the capabilities of the software.
