I felt the same about my M200 in pastel blue but the more I used it the more I loved it. I have the M400 in White Tortoiseshell as well and I like them both the same to write with but I like the look of the M400 more. I hope you grow to love yours to with time.
Thanks for sharing! I hope I have the same experience. Sometimes just writing with a pen for a good minute can change the feel of it, but I still feel the price is outrageous for the quality.
This is my 2nd Pelican 200. The first I bought about a decade ago in Rome, black black with cartridge ink. I bought another m200 on Amazon today discounted to $140. Black cap Green body. Inked like yours. Medium nib. First Pelikan was scratchy, but the second wrote smoothly, as well as my $1000 Namiki and Nakaya, better than my $500 Eboya. Since Pelikans are hand made. It really depends on the particular pen you get.
I am so happy to hear your thoughts about this because I felt alone since everyone seems to love them; I felt exactly the same way you do. I have a M205 in pastel blue with a EF nib and it did not even wrote out of the box, I had to smooth it and fix the nib extensively before even being able to write with it, and I bought from a very reputable authorized reseller. I just ordered an Asvine for $25 and I am sure it will be much better quality than those cheepo Pelikans. I wanted to buy a M600 but instead I bought a Scribo la dotta which feels an extremely luxurious pen and Scribo customers service is superb. No more Pelikans on my list, I would rather support craftsmanship than feeding Pelikan’s greed.
I 10000% agree! So glad you feel the same. I was expecting a great writer based on the hype around this brand but wow it missed the bar. I haven't tried at Scribo pen yet, but someday I really hope to. But for the same price of this pen I can get a much better pen that has better craftsmanship as you said!
My first Pelikan, a M205 apatite, is a beautiful pen. Smooth F nib that writes M. Yet, like you, I was underwhelmed because it's so small for the price tag. It's nearly a pocket pen. I was flabbergasted. Yes, I've grown to love the pen and the matching ink, but I, too was disappointed at first glance.
I'm hoping it will grow on me the more I use it. I'm going to try some more inks in it and see if I find a good match. I love the coloring but the smallness and "feel" is just underwhelming for the price.
I recently bought the Pelikan M200 Copper Rose Gold and for me, it looks just as nice in person as it does in the photos. It was a lot lighter in weight than I expected. I knew it would be small, so I wasn't disappointed with that. My nib is juicy and it has handled all the inks I've tried in it really well. It left enough of an impression that the Pelikan M400 white tortoise is now on my to-buy list but I haven't bought it yet because the price is very prohibitive in my country. So for me, I felt like I paid more than I should for my M200 but I love the look of mine and I am happy with the writing experience.
Great video. The way I look at it is that it all balances out. I have some jinhaos that are shockingly good. I have some pricier pens that don’t perform well. That being said, I still don’t buy pelican or any of the brands that seemingly have QC issues. Good luck on your next pen!
I’m in 100% agreement Daniele! I bought this exact pen and am extremely disappointed. It’s my first Pelikan and I guess I had high expectations given its price and Pelican’s reputation for high quality. I stand united with you in regret over this purchase.!
Give it a bit of time and a different ink. I use pilot Fuyu-Syogun in mine and that is my favourite combination with the M200 F nib. I actually quite like writing with the pen but it is a lot of money for what the pen is.
It’s a beauty and I totally get your confusion because it’s so small. I got a vintage M250 (should be same size) longer time ago and it’s small and I don’t use it often (I don’t post it.) In your video the Twsbi looks like a giant advertising gift 😅 That is exactly my problem with Pelilan: I would need the M1000 (!!) to write really comfortably like with my Leonardo MM, Estie. And I think the M1000 it’s still smaller! Money saved… Thank you for being so honest- I think it helps a lot of people!
@@mydandeliondiaries I would say „it depends“ ☺️ For me the grip section is too thin and small (threads begin relatively low) If you can, try the M400/600/800 and you know if it fits you or not
Ugh, I hate being disappointed by a new pen, ESPECIALLY a more expensive one. I appreciate your reviews so much, though. I have had the thought so many times "this Pelikan looks like a Jinhao 82," so this was pretty validating. I hope it improves with use and different ink for you, though! :)
What do you think is the best fountain pen for cursive writing? And want the thickness of the writing similar to the one you show here in the pelicans.
There is no real "best fountain pen for cursive writing" it would depend on how you like to write. However, for a higher end pen, the Pilot Custom 823 in a 14K Medium nib writes beautifully for a long amount of time with the back vacuum open to allow continuous ink flow. For a more affordable option a TWSBI Eco with a Medium nib as well would be close to the line width of this Pelikan and I haven't had a bad TWSBI yet!
@@mydandeliondiaries Perfect I'll go with a TWSBI for now and may be if i get better and use it a lot than i'll gift myself a Pilot :P Any idea on how LAMY Safari 2000 is? I prefer Japanese made though by LAMY looks attractive but has a long nib and stem and with shorter hands i prefer something thinner or smaller. In India, we used to be happy with a 60 cent hero fountain pen but want to improve my game as i love writing especially with ink pens. There is some serenity and love when writing with ink pens.
Love the ink. I also bought a Pelikan m200 and find it uninspiring. I bought a replacement nib because the nib it came with felt scratchy - it didnt make much difference. I find I just don’t really reach for the pen.
I’m sorry you had such a bad experience. I really hate that the M200 series is the “entry” level pen for the souveran line, because really, it’s not. Pelikan is my favorite brand. I have a couple M400, and M600s the 600s are definitely my favorite. The writing experience is unlike anything else I have tried (platinum, pilot, sailor being my other gold nibs/premium pens). The M600 is so smooth and juicy and the pen just glides across the page for a very comfortable and enjoyable experience. I’d steer clear of the 400 if you don’t like the size of the 200. They are the same size but the 400 has a gold nib. The 600 is slightly larger and so on for the 800 and 1000. I bought mine a couple years ago before prices went up, and I can’t really justify the cost at the moment but I’d love to grow my collection to include an M800 and an M1000 in the future. Their vintage pens are excellent as well, so maybe try one of those out first? Thank you for being so transparent. I truly enjoy your videos because of your authenticity. Happy writing!
Sucks that you didn’t like it. Kinda wonder what you were actually expecting from the 200. I got the copper/rose gold ,on sale, because $200+ from what I’ve seen on reviews from other videos told me it wasn’t worth full price. When I was at Atlas, I tried the M600 and M800. Definitely all around better and wrote beautifully too but waaaaaaaaay out of my price range.
I expected it to be a small pen, but not as small as it is. I also expected the "premium" resin to actually be premium. It feels like cheap plastic, just like the resin used in the Jinhaos. I think that Pelikan needs to work on their quality if they are going to demand that price tag.
I think it’s a beautiful pen. I really want an M600…but that price tag is holding me back. But now I know not to grab the 200. It’s just that gold and white are my favorite colors so this pen has tempted me multiple times.
Seems to be a Rite of Passage for the fountain pen-obsessed. Doesn't make it any less frustrating. I was surprised to see the size of the M200 next to the Prera and Jinhao 82(two pens I really enjoy). Thanks for your review. PS:The only Pelikan pen I own is a Shine-Mystic Twist.
Thank you for watching!! I know not all pens can be winners but I was ultimately surprised (kind of glad I got my initial reaction on camera haha). The Prera is one of my favorite "pocket" pens and the Jinhaos are so fun to play with and customize since they are so affordable. I haven't tried a Twist but it look like a fun pen!
@@mydandeliondiaries Yes,the Prera is just about the perfect little pen;mine is opaque grey with nib. I managed to fit a Kaweco 1.5mm stub into a Jinhao 82 which is fun. The Pelikan Twist looks like more fun than it really is imho.
If the pen doesn't't make you happy, return it. I own a few of the M200 and M205 and love them. They have great nibs, the resin is beautiful and they are enjoyable to use. I also own a M800 and it's an awesome pen. Pelikan is a great brand and you shouldn't give up on them. The next time you attend a pen show, stop by the Pelikan table and try their pens.
Pick up a vintage Pelikan 400 instead! Note: the 400 is different from the M400, which is modern. The M200 series isn't a great pen. Also, starting out personally with the 400 series of Pelikans, I've always felt they were more standard size as many vintage pens are similar in size, so the Lamy Safari and many modern pens always felt on the large side for me, but I am getting more used to them too. I feel as though the size of the 400 series is perfect for me, writing posted or unposted, light enough to carry around easily and write easily, and tons of ink capacity with a beautiful translucent barrel, especially in the tortoiseshell pattern (which is what I usually go for). I didn't realize the price of the M200 was $200, I would be disappointed too at that price. A good used M400 (they're better than the M200 for the same size, just with a gold nib) runs around that price, I picked up a M400 White Tortoiseshell for less than $200 even. Still a firm nib with not a whole lot of character, but smoother than the M200 by miles. A good M400 is around what you paid for the M200 and for a bit over that you can get a good 400 vintage pen, which is lovely to write with. Much softer nib, much smoother, wetter, and overall more pleasant writing experience. The nib widths do run on the wide side as you've found out, and the caps are a bit "loose" feeling so if you keep it clipped to something like a laptop bag, it can find its way out if you're not using it everyday. For new pens with steel nibs the Kawecos are such great value for money that it's really not justifiable to spend more (Lamys are great too but like I said, they're a bit large for me so I don't go to them as much), but I've had a decent experience with Diplomat for a similar price range to the Pelikans, they almost write like a modern gold Pelikan nib (like the M400), just firmer than the M400.
I'm sorry it wasn't what you expected, it's so sad when you get a fountain pen that disappoints you... I've been there so many times... Last year I bought a Platinum 3776 Century Nice Lilias and it had a broad nib. I wanted a fine nib. It was my mistake because the nib size wasn't on the the listing... I never use that pen because of the broad nib, I keep thinking I'll get a grind for it, but here I still sit with it having a broad nib a year later... My husband was going to buy a Pelikan Souveran M405 in Black/Anthracite Stripe new for my birthday. I was worried about the size of that pen being close to the size of my Sailor Pro Gear Slim pens. I had friends in a Facebook group I belong to tell me to look for a used Pelikan Souveran Black/Green Stripe M600 EF instead. I found a nice used M600 for less than $300 (the same price I would have paid for the new M405) and I bought it even though it wasn't the color I wanted. Plus it was a great price and a good size. I received my Pelikan M600 Black/Green Stripe this week and it is a nice size, still a bit on the small size but when posted feels more like my Lamy 2000 in my hand. It writes a bit wetter than a EF nib (more like a M) should; but I figure I will use dryer inks in the pen to get the line close to a F line. I am glad I bought it. It is a classic, iconic pen for my pen collection. I probably won't buy another Pelikan pen, the nibs are too wet for me, and the sizes of the pens are ridiculous for the cost. I'm so glad it writes smooth and gives a good show of the ink inside of the pen...
Thank you so much for sharing Tina!! For your Platinum 3776 maybe you can get a replacement nib unit? Not sure if that would be a good option or not :)
Im sorry to hear that you dont like your m200. I think the what defines the price on pelikans is that amazing built quality and for that so their longevity. For that reason and if your fine with a smaller pen give maybe the german ebay a try you can have vintage pelikans with amazing nibs for verry little money. The style really did not change much and if for any reason the pen breaks put the nib in a new one.
I do think the mechanisms of the pen are very nice and smooth. I will look on eBay as I do not have a vintage pen yet and I've heard that Pelikan has good ones.
i’m so sorry to hear you were disappointed in this pen. it looks beautiful, though i understand and relate to your feeling it is overpriced. i hope you can at least get some good use out of it! thank you for your honesty. :)
I wanted to buy the M200 like yours but I think I’ll pass after watching your video. I have two M800 pens and I really like the nib and weight. They write really nice. You should return your pen and get something you like 😊
I'm sorry you don't love it. I tried them at the Chicago pen show. I liked the M1000 only out of all of them. I just refuse to pay that type of money. lol I hope the more you write with it and maybe with a different ink you will find your happy place with it.
Thank you. I agree that the price of the M1000 is just ridiculous. When I go to a pen show I will look at the other models and see how I feel. I'm hoping another ink will make this pen better but only time will tell!
I have m400 with medium nib it writes broder than my lamy medium nibs. It also writes wet. I like posting the cap while writing it is so light. You can use shading inks to get most of your pen. 😊
I love the looks of these pens but I have watched videos about the chai spec. ed & the heart spec. ed recently & the people said similar to you. I want a specific colour in the bigger sizes but I won't ever get it (price 💩) so I shall continue to watch from afar. I'm sorry you were disappointed, Danielle x
Thank you Debra 💝 I find it really disappointing that the price point of these pens is so high for the quality of its components. Just sad to see the greed of some of these brands.
I had the same situation with my Pelikan M200. But once the wave of the first disappointment subsided, it turned out to be quite a nice pen, and what's more, it was comfortable and I still have it. However, I will not buy this model again, the price is too high.
I have the M200 in Copper Rose Gold and I was also disappointed, especially for the price. It does feel cheap and is very small. I find mine gets very little use. Will probably go in my sale list. I’m sorry you are disappointed.
i'm super sorry to hear that this pen isn't what you thought it would be :( just an fyi though that the word g*pped is considered a slur against the roma people
Sorry to hear this M200 was such a disappointment. To be honest, this is why I shy away from European pens, and stick to Japanese pens. 10 times out of 10, if I’m spending over 100 dollars, I want a consistently ground gold nib first, and a fancy body and filling mechanism second. Japanese pens generally run off cartridge converters, but I see this as a plus, because they’re easier to clean, and there is less to go wrong.
I do love my Japanese pens. Pilot fountain pens are some of my all time favorites. I'm going to give this pen a chance but the initial impression was pretty poor.
I like the look of the pen, but the "experience" wasn't there for me. I can always sell it at a future date after I've given the pen a fair chance with some other inks.
Thank you -Thank you - THANK YOU for your honesty and candor!
You are so welcome!
I was really wanting to try out a Pelikan, and this has helped change my mind! Thank you!
You're welcome!! If you can make it to a pen shop or a pen show maybe try one out, they may be wonderful for you!

Thank you! I love the coloring, but it's the quality for the price that I'm most disappointed with. I will use it until I just can't!
I wanted to buy the M200 like yours but I think I’ll pass after watching your video. I have two M800 pens and I really like the nib and weight. They write really nice. You should return your pen and get something you like 😊
Thank you for sharing and the suggestion!! I'm glad your M800's are working well for you :)
@@mydandeliondiaries yes at the pen show I tried them all and the m1000 was a heavier pen and felt really balanced but not for that amount of money.
I have m400 with medium nib it writes broder than my lamy medium nibs. It also writes wet. I like posting the cap while writing it is so light.
You can use shading inks to get most of your pen. 😊
Thanks for the tips!
I believe I would’ve saved up for the M400 and got the gold nib from everything I’ve heard from other people. It’s just another steel nibpen.😢
I thought about this. Maybe I should have, but at the same time the prices for this brand of pens is just insane for what you are getting.
Thank you for sharing!! I'm hoping I have similar feelings the more I use it.
I have the M200 in Copper Rose Gold and I was also disappointed, especially for the price. It does feel cheap and is very small. I find mine gets very little use. Will probably go in my sale list. I’m sorry you are disappointed.
Thank you for sharing! I'm hoping I can find a way to love the pen but I may end up selling mine too. Best of luck!
i'm super sorry to hear that this pen isn't what you thought it would be :( just an fyi though that the word g*pped is considered a slur against the roma people
Sorry! Thank you for telling me, I had no idea.
Omg I wished you would have stopped opening it and returned it if you don’t like it!
I like the look of the pen, but the "experience" wasn't there for me. I can always sell it at a future date after I've given the pen a fair chance with some other inks.
