That guy that was trying to kill his gf’s plants so she’d believe she was a bad plant parent was so disgusting. 20 plants is not even a lot, especially by hobbyist standards but just in general. I agree with everything you said. If he treats her this way over a harmless hobby, imagine what he’ll do if they have kids or another serious situation comes up.

omg the first story is legendary on Reddit :) many people in plant groups know it and whenever it's brought up people are still seething :))) but to put some more context - I believe it happened and was posted around the time when those plants were really expensive, so it wasn't even a couple dollars, the pink princess alone was going for hundreds. And albo for thousands (depending on the size of course). So if they got market value prices for those cuttings they essentially stole thousands of dollars from her. Some people were seriously commenting that she should sue for burglary and I kind of agreed with them at the time. Now it feels different with the prices so much down, but back then... phew.

The story about the vines in water being knocked over: it is probably much more than the plant, there is mostly likely a pattern of him not acknowledging her feelings or taking responsibility, and of her overreacting due to this pattern…I can relate so much. The office one: why is it ok for the co workers to move the plants to their desk but not ok for her to move them back? If it's a free for all then why can't she do what they did and just move them back? The whole thing is ridiculous and weird. No one should have touched them. But absolutely no one should be upset with her for moving them back.

Here's a possible, albeit unlikely explanation. Some companies arrange to have purchased plants displayed around the office. Perhaps her coworkers didn't know they were her personal plants and thought she had been hoarding company plants. So when she was gone, they redistributed the plants as they thought fair and appropriate.

Oh my god hahaha one time my husband was in our sunroom and had a bunch of boxes packed behind my tent because we were moving and went to grab them. Well he leaned on my tent and knocked over a tall black shelf and it knocked every other plant over in my tent 😂 He came around the corner with this look in his eyes (I was doing the dishes) and said “babe…. Your plants” 👀 And showed me what he did and I couldn’t stop laughing 😂 He legit felt so bad and refused to let me help him clean them up and was in my tent for hours cleaning up pon and glass and plants. I felt so grateful that he cleaned up his mess and didn’t get upset at him at all. I felt bad that he felt so bad and believe it or not there were minimal casualties 🥵 I know he didn’t mean to do that and couldn’t be upset with him for it ❤ Hours of repotting later, I managed to get them all back into new vessels and all was good haha

You know, something that really just grinds my gears is when people say "It's just a plant." in response to a plant person being upset. It's just so rude. Like it doesn't matter what "it" is, when someone has a hobby or an interest that they care about, then that thing should just be respected. Obviously context matters like a plant isn't the same as a human life or anything, but when people are upset that something they care about has been destroyed or messed with, just show some goddamn empathy and say I'm sorry!

That first one omg… I feel sorry for the niece tbh, it’s obvious that her mom asking about the value of the plants meant she was planning this all along because her daughter had been taught about propagation. I feel like she manipulated her daughter into it :( like “of course it’s ok honey, she said she was going to cut them for us anyway”. A 14 yr old can’t sell on market place, that is 100% on the mom and she’s probably ruined the plant hobby for her daughter now, not to mention her child’s relationship with her aunt. All over greed. Quick question for you, not about the Reddit stories, but about your soil mixes. You said you don’t like to repot plants when they are wet and your soil mixes always look very dry. How do you avoid dust kicking up and going everywhere with dry mixes. I find, especially with Perlite, that I need to wet it down a little bit before mixing it into my soil mix. I am trying an aquarium substrate with some of my propagations and find the same thing. The dust that comes up is very fine and I’m sure not good for the lungs. Anyone else with any thoughts I’m happy to hear them. Thanks so much and I hope you have a great day.

    • @unplantparenthood
      @unplantparenthood  8 місяців тому

I am soooo neurotic about mixing substrates and dust kicking up in the air! I always always mask up when I’m mixing soil, sifting amendments, or repotting really dry dusty plants. The only time I don’t do it is when I’m sitting down for a repot and chat like this. Otherwise I typically grab an N95 or just a standard mask and make sure the vent fan in my plant room is on. Ideally doing it outside is best, but I’d still mask up! Especially if you’re working with something like perlite.

Yeah, I don’t think there is a plant worth losing that relationship. It sounds like they were close and that she has a close relationship with her brother. That’s a lot of loss over plants. I’m not sure if you listened to my entire explanation, but the reason you disagree with me was exactly the point I made. I personally don’t anthropomorphize my plants- meaning I don’t put the same value on it as I do a human or animal life. I said there are people who do, and that’s why the man in the story felt the way he did. But I think moreso than that, the bottom line with that situation is boundaries. They both paid for the plants, they broke up, he agreed to give her certain plants and now they’re no longer his property. Again, because I do not anthropomorphize plants, I don’t see it the same way as custody of a child or dog in a divorce. If we weren’t talking about plants in this situation, my view would be completely different.

@@unplantparenthood It was very clear that you don't anthropomorphize plants, but my point is, you come across as very dismissive of people who do. I'm sure a certain contingent of your followers (of which I am one) feel differently. You're absolutely entitled to express how you feel especially on your own channel, however I felt it was important to let you know that it can come across as insensitive to some plant lovers.

@mayahs792 The entire purpose of my channel is to highlight how special this hobby is and for the people who enjoy it. But I also think it’s important to note that people in the hobby like myself who don’t anthropomorphize their plants shouldn’t be automatically be categorized as dismissive of the people who do. I brought up the example of people bashing me in my comments for doing things like cutting plants, giving away plants etc. because the same way that I can respect people’s right to *not* choosing to do those things, I too deserve the same respect. It definitelt was not my intention to come off as dismissive- I thought that me explicitly saying he’s *not* an a-hole and simply just cares for the plants made that clear.. Again, my emphasis was moreso about the boundaries he was overstepping.

Story #1. Yes she’s over reacting. They had no permission to cut in their own. Also to sell them was very bad. No she shouldn’t let them plant sit but family is family. She should allow them in her area. Forgive them. Family is everything. It’s all you have in the end.

Plants are expensive and if she is spending mutual money, it is his business. Also, he lives there so how many plants he lives with is his is business. I'm saying this as someone who has about 50 plants and cohabits. Also, in intimate relationships, are you saying it wouldn't be healthy if a partner commented on moderation in gambling or drinking?? If you are spending hours at the casino? It's the same concept.

Comparing plant collecting to a gambling or drinking addiction is kind of a stretch in my opinion. Especially since alcoholism is a disease. I’d hardly consider having 20 plants a “problem” and him even commenting saying she should enjoy a hobby in “moderation” is a total red flag to me. Spending hours gambling at a casino is absolutely nothing like spending hours at home caring for plants.
I did comment on the money aspect of it and talked about my personal experience with it as well as what I witnessed with an old friend. It’s not like I was completely dismissive of that. But in my opinion, unless she doesn’t make her own money and is completely financially dependent on him, her money isn’t his business. 🤷🏻‍♀️

@unplantparenthood addiction is an issue regardless of the vice. Plants aren't an exception. As a plant influencer, I know you've seen people discuss the issue of plant hoarding and addiction on UA-cam. Just like you don't feel like the bf has a right to decide if it's a problem, you can't say that 20 is no big deal. It depends on the person.

@@trublkbelle you’re right that addiction is addiction regardless of the vice, but nothing about that story screamed addiction to me. It sounded like someone who is getting into the hobby and has found something she loves and enjoys. What I DO get from the story is a partner who clearly feels like he has a better idea of what is good and bad for her than she does, believes he has the right to “moderate” her hobbies (even though he has said it helps her mental health), and then goes as far as to even kill her plants purposely but make her believe it’s because she’s bad at caring for plants.
In this specific scenario, I don’t feel like she’s the problem, but he very much is. It’s clear we both see it very differently and I think it’s totally fine to agree to disagree. :)

I think I personally prefer just showing the roster of plants as you go actually. When you show the roster first it usually takes a bit and for me at least, I already want to get into the good stuff but I still want to know about the plants. Introducing them as you go makes it feel more brief. But that's just how I feel and many people might actually prefer the introduction first and no distractions later

I guess doing the roster is easier for me because I lose track of my thoughts so fast and then the convo gets derailed. But honestly I derail my conversations regardless so it doesn’t really matter anyway 😆 but I agree, doing a roster is tiring haha

I happily and freely give cuttings away to friends and family but the thought of someone just helping themselves and CUTTING MY PROPERTY makes me so damn mad! (It hasn’t happened to me but my opinion still stands 🥲)
