Thank you for introducing this topic. I follow this technology as a 360 vr designer. That is amazing!

I'm glad it was worthwhile! I'll be digging into it more in the future as well, I really love it.

Zac Crane thanks! I already have ideas for episode 2, so this series will be a lot of fun, and I'm going to explore point cloud mapping more in the future too!

Great video! Just started experimenting with Apple lidar scans as well. Really fun and loving the capture speed & quality. Brings a new way to photograph cities & landscapes.

Agreed! I should make a follow-up to this video showing off the iPhone’s LiDAR capabilities.

Point cloud can scan so real and make in AE is interesting.

Great work man! Found your videos and it’s really top quality and informative, hope UA-cam algorithm really gives a push on this eventually!
As per this specific one, made me have a little mental breakthrough when you spoke about the evolution of film and photography: back in my physics degree we spoke about and played a bit with pure optical holograms. It’s a hard, expensive and limited process and having everyday consumers taking “holographs” instead of “photographs” seems decades away still.
However I guess this technique means we will just ditch the analogic holograms (they will stay within the scientific/industrial contexts) and with the democratization of AR/VR and improvement of mobile technology like that of your iPhone we will be probably sending digital “holoselfies” within the next decade. Sounds exciting!

Thanks for the compliment! I think 2021 will be a great year!
Yes I think you're absolutely right.
99.9% of holograms in the next few decades will likely be mapped 3D models overlaid with AR glasses. It can be confusing sometimes because we assume the current way of doing things _must_ be the path towards innovation, and we're blindsided when innovation appears out of left field, from a different path, but brings around a similar result (see gas cars and electric cars overtaking the industry).

Hi Jarren, i'm curious to know if point clouds can only be applied specifically with photogrammetry or if i can export a 3d obj from zbrush or something like it and them work with point cloud from that. Im asking this because i wanted to create a environment from scratch and be able to make those fine effects. Thank you for the video!

Hi Diego, that's a great question! There are definitely ways to do it ( ua-cam.com/video/mCxRX5u16Ks/v-deo.html ), though I'm not sure exactly what the workflow would look like for your use-case. That sounds like a great idea. Good luck!

I’ve been thinking the same thing. Especially because since this video came out SO much has changed. It’s on my list.

Could you recommend a software to translate the polygon mesh to a dot pointcloud?

Sorry, off the top of my head I don't have an answer for you. I'm sure there's something on github, or a few google searches away!

Do you know a lot about NVIDIA Quadro graphics cards? I used to be super interested in workstation computers, specifically the software side of things (still am!), and Quadros are the best when it comes to rendering polygons, so I wonder if a powerful GPU like this could do a good job with the depth rendering you talked about. Do more intelligent software videos! This and the video where you showed what you were doing in Ableton were awesome.

Wrote a long reply that got deleted...
I know a little about the cards, but I don't focus there often, mostly stick to my iMac with Radeon Pro 580 8GB.
Point cloud content like I showed here is rendered live in unity, I think my computer could handle smaller environments without any problems.
And thanks, I prefer these sorts of videos, ones that really make you think & brainstorm, and show behind the scenes of a process!

@@JarrenRocks That's so cool. So it's an advanced rendering technology of the future that can be handled decently on higher end consumer computers!! Thanks to you Jarren I NEVER would have learned about this! Thanks for continuing to provide amazing content, I love it!

2:40 unfortunately UA-cam does not like little particles to move around a lot?
    4:00 pointcloud apps

Just seeing this comment now sorry!
Particles are due to compression, Tom Scott has a great video about this: ua-cam.com/video/r6Rp-uo6HmI/v-deo.html
Pointcloud apps, hmm Today I'd recommend Sitescape, that's the best one (especially if you have an iPhone 12pro or 13 pro (because they have build in LIDAR now).
