    If you're thinking the big boys look rough (as in hair coat) you're right! The cold and the wind don't help, plus I just did a fecal on Hamish today and he's pretty wormy and being treated! ♥
    Havoc has a low worm load but is being treated as well because of his pen mate's worm situation.

    You are really going to like your Premier 1 fencing. I have several of them & love the convenience of them. Poor Hamish! He must be very stubborn or just hard to convince, I've never seen a goat try it more than 2 times! 😔 Your kids are looking good! And Elpis has such a big 'baby tummy' already!! I'm looking forward to her babies! I'm a little envious of your green grass, we won't be seeing it for a while yet...more hay...

    • @SageandStoneHomestead
      @SageandStoneHomestead  Рік тому +2

      I'm so grateful for the green grass!! Most winters we don't go totally brown, at least not for long. The green now pales in comparison to the green of June! I'm SO excited for that!! Elpis definitely has multiples in there, she's showing quite a lot! She is second to last due on May 12, Calamity is due the next day May 13!!

    When we first got a shock collar to keep our golden retriever in the yard, I thought it was awful. But one or two shocks and he learned. Before, he would run into the road so I’m sure it has saved his life.

    Hilarious…Havoc sent Hamish out to be the crash test dummy as he peeks out the hangout shouting thank you friend, glad you took the heat for me on this one…enjoy ya snack🤣😂 too funny. I feel bad when they gotta test it but boy they learn quickly!!! Glad your garden is still going strong. God Bless

    Poor Hamish!! I think he tried the fence enough for himself and Havoc!!!😂😵
    The moveable fencing is going to open up so many opportunities for you to graze the goats!!! Once they all test it a few times they will have respect for the fence! I also think the design of the fence, being the netting type, discourages the animal from charging forward.
    Best wishes with all the outside plants as we head into another cold, cold night!! Let's hope that this is the season's final night with temperatures so cold!!! Stay safe!!!

      I sure hope this is it for THIS kind of cold! Low 30's would be expected and tolerably okay! I was proud of Hamish for not charging the fence!! I thought he might when he first barreled toward it! Stay warm, Cindy!! ♥

    I can't say enough positive things about that fencing. I LOVE ours. The first time I heard our resident woodchuck squeal was a moment of triumph! He stayed out of my garden and lived a wonderful life. Great investment. It smarts, that's for sure. I have hubby come out and hold up each section while I weed whack under it, it looses too much pep otherwise.

    Poor Hamish, you'd think after it got him the time he'd stay away. There's a lady I watch on C & J funny farm n that fencin is the main fence she uses for her goats. It's light enough she moves it herself. Glad your plants made it thru the frost. Growin up mama hardly lost anything to the frost. I sure miss gardening, n cannin. My favorite meal growin up was a garden meal. Nothin better. God bless y'all ❤️ from Indiana

    We have two portable electric fences hooked together that the goats can come out into from their barn/pen. My two little babies were introduced to it at around 7 weeks. I don't think ours is as strong as yours. They got zapped a few times when they first went in it but they didn't take off crying. They would just kind of make like a spitting noise and jump away from it. The two older ones have gotten it a few times as well. Now they all stay away from it. I love it! Their pen isn't huge but this way they have lots of room. We have woods also and we will sometimes put part of it in the woods. That's kind of a pain trying to make sure no brush and stems are holding it too far off the ground so they could get out.

      This energizer can power up to 500feet (or 5 lengths of Permanet Pro) so I think just having one on it makes it pretty hot. I don't think I can turn it down? I have plenty of bigger goats to run in there while the little ones grow though! ♥

    • @kimberlyearly8918
      @kimberlyearly8918 Рік тому +1

      @@SageandStoneHomestead We can't turn ours up or down. But we have a different battery. I don't remember what brand our fence is. Ours has 4x6 squares and there were a couple of times that we had the white wire around the metal thing that goes in the ground by accident which grounded it out. I was sitting in our den and looked out the window and one of them was just walking around in the yard.😂🤣 And the other one was in the fence screaming because they were separated lol.😂

  • @GWPHomestead

    I like our electric netting a lot but since we got the poly wire I’ve really gotten excited about the possibilities. It’s so much cheaper than a wire fence and with our pasture fences in disarray I can’t beat it. Knock on wood it’s keeping the beef steer in place, too.

  • @mysticalcat713

    I tried one of these fences when we first adopted our show Boer goat. He just barreled right through it. We tried it a few more times, and he did the same thing. I don't remember if the voltage was really high enough, or if he just didn't really care about getting a short shock.
    It was also a new and strange place for him, and I think he just wanted to get back to his teenage owner. I haven't tried the electric netting to keep him in since then. It does keep him out of other areas, though.
    We also live on 18 acres of Forest, so it is more of a challenge to set up netting.

    • @SageandStoneHomestead
      @SageandStoneHomestead  Рік тому +2

      Yes forested areas would be more difficult for sure!! I really thought Hamish was going to run through it but thankfully he stopped! ♥

    One thing to remember with electric fencing. Goats can sense when the electric shorts out. They will get out so it is something to be aware of. I had to resort to cattle panels and no one got out of that but they are expensive. Hopefully it will work for you!

    • @SageandStoneHomestead
      @SageandStoneHomestead  Рік тому +1

      I am going to order another length of fence! I haven't found goats to be hard to contain at all, I know there is a running joke that if a fence won't hold water it won't hold a goat, but we have way more issues with dogs than goats and fences lol

  • @GWPHomestead
    @GWPHomestead Рік тому +1

    There’s more to it than just the voltage, but Little Scoot walked head first into the poly wire for the steer (10,000 volts) and she handled it just fine. I suspect your little goats will be fine with the netting. If you learn anything different I’d love to know!

    As far as your green house goes, is there anyway to run a drop cord out to it and leave a light on inside? Might be worth the money to line the top of your green house with grow lights specifically for the really cold nights.
    Here in our zone, which is also 7 B, NW Georgia, It's supposed to dip down tonight to about 24 degrees F, and I've already had trouble out of the cold temps with my Tomato plants, but mine were a little further along than yours. They might actually make it but they've already been stressed extremely so i'm worried about em being able to recover. They've been outside for the last couple weeks, but under a plastic greenhouse type tarp. Some damage has been noticed, but they are still trying to survive. My Pak Choi was like "YEA, BRING IT SNOWWHITE" and has doubled in size since the cold set in.

    • @SageandStoneHomestead
      @SageandStoneHomestead  Рік тому +2

      I have thought about it and may do something like that in the future! Our Amish friends heat their greenhouses and I'm thinking about picking their brain to see how it's done. May need to make some structural adjustments.

    I use electric fence (Premier 1) on my goats, too. It seems like the billies really never learn. I have one big boy who has been in electric fence pasture for at least 10 years. He periodically has to test it or he uses it to his advantage. He pushes other goats he may not like at the time into the fence. The girls all catch on fast, I put the does into electric fenced pastures with 1 - 2 week old kids. They all do fine. I really think the kids don't go near the electric fences because their mamas told them not to. I also use a stronger voltage than you do with no problems. I don't put the sheep/lamb combos into electric fencing until the lambs are about 2 - 3 weeks old. After about ten years of use I've learned that the goats and smarter than the sheep 🤔. No offence to the sheep. Really enjoy your videos.

    I know this is an older video, but from our research the bigger the animal the stronger the shock. The smalle the animal the smaller the shock. Like a chicken wouldn't get as much of a shock as a goat would. It's something sciencey to do with body mass😂
