It’s amazing how much the body shapes changed during the 70s up to the 90s. The cut aways were very different. Some horns were shaper and the cut aways had different angles.
Yeap, slight variations can make 2 Les Pauls very different.
About that Black Beauty you mentioned: Fun Fact, Foo Fighters Chris Shiflett sayd on his Rig Rundown recently, that he had only one Guitar when he joined the Foos and was an 80's Black Beauty. He swapped the Pickups and got rid of the pickgard over the years in No Use for a Name and Foo Fighters, but for his 50th Birthday his bandmate and awesome human being Pat Smear Gave period correct Tim Shaw Pickups for him to put It on again. Now the Guitar is in exposed at the Rock n roll hall of fame in Cleeveland
WOW! Great story! Love Dave & the FF I never knew this! When did the guitar go into RNRHOF? Thx!
It’s been awesome having trogly look at the older Gibsons again, keep it up!
It's really cool to see the increase in your knowledge and abilities. I wish you all the success in the world on your museum. You are another one to show that if you put in the work, skill and knowledge, then dreams can come true. You are truly blessed and you deserve it Austin.
Wow that top has magic in the wood
One could say Tokai was the one in the early mid seventies to do re issue historics
That is absolutely true.
When Rich B. at Leo's was negotiating the Leo's Les Paul he had three guitars with him at the preliminary meeting with Gibson.
1. A current production Les Paul Standard.
2. A 1959 Les Paul Standard
3. A Tokai copy.
Rich brought the Tokai to demonstrate that it was actually closer in spec to the '59 than the late 70's production Standard.
Cheers!
@@seanwoodburn2616 thanks for the interesting information
My '76 ES-175 has the large 70s headstock. It seems appropriate though, given the size of the guitar.
I have bought a 'standard 82' LP (811120xx), all original in dark sunburst color, with fantastic quilted maple top. This guitar is extreamly heavy (4.8kg), have perfect touch feel, creamy tone and unbeliveable sustain.
Incase anyone missed the word at 12:20 it’s “chatoyance/chatoyancy”roughly translated from French means “shine like a cats eyes”. It’s a term used primarily in gemmology and was then used by wood carvers and Luthiers.
I knew a stripper named Chatoyance once
I'm right there with you Austin, I too love and enjoy the chatoyance of figured woods, guitars are one of the many ways to enjoy and appreciate what nature has given us.
Great episode, I remember the Standard 82s and 83s when they first came out and arrived at the music stores.
Very nice.. I love seeing something and going back and watching some of your old ones like a custom iteration of this
“Heritage Series” there was an Elite and Standard. I had an 81 Elite I paid $1500 for my senior year in high school in 1981. I bought it new from Quigley Music in KC
You almost could have got a used burst for that in 81!
Honestly while I love seeing the rare Les Pauls, the thing I always look forward to most is watching Trog getting better and better as a player.
I fully agree, I love guitars but it is all the cool woodgrains that excite me, I have an Epiphone LP with a quilted top and it is just fabulous to look at, nothing can fake how this quilted top moves, simply amazing mother nature.
I've noticed the neck binding on all my 2010's Gibson necks is much thicker than both of my 2020 Les Paul Standard's..
I love it. You played Free . One of my favorites from classic rock and I'm just perfectly singing right along with it.
Man, going down to Memphis to Strings N' Things was always a thrill as a kid from a small town to the northeast an hour away. Seems like some rock band's tour bus would always be out front and you never knew who you would meet. I remember a guitar clinic by Tommy Tedesco. Good times.
Tommy Tedesco one of the all time greats
@@steveparish9210 He was super cool and mellow. Really funny, too.
Evening all!! Audio is good now.
Great video and great guitars! Tim Shaws among Gibsons best pickups ever. They should re-issue them. (I know, they are just kind of a PAF, but anyway..😅)
I owned an amazing top LP Gibson from this Era. Many were very heavy guitars but the Shaw Pickups actually sounded good.
I got 1983 Gibson les paul custom pearl white. And a 2011 blk.classic custom.
Very cool episode my man 🤙
Thanks for the education as always.
Beautiful wood grain! Thanks again! 💚🤘👍
Wonder episode! I really enjoy all the Gibson’s history that you share!!!
S&T did the first double cut Les Paul standards
Your playing gets better every time I log on! Great job !
New words are always cool! Thanks Austin!
Beautiful guitars! I had a Guitar Trader Standard. I sure miss it!
Wow...documented my birthday guitar, and it is BEAUTIFUL! Thanks for finding her and documenting her. It's the next best thing.
Same man
I used to walk through strings n things making a wish list back in the day! Miss that place.
Nice way to condense all the measurements!
The Héritage 80 élite are the best sounding '59 burst copies. I tried them all and always return to the Élite. A cool mojo they got
I GUESS THAT GUITAR IS ALL RITE NOW
Well my 76 les Paul standard from Kalamazoo is kinda a one of a kind guitar in tobacco burst. Burst back and neck little larger headstock. Still looks and plays great. Nfs. Christmas gift from my mom in 76. Retail price I paid new was 576.00. My 81 cherry sunburst burst custom has sunburst back an neck as well. Large headstock with binding. They don't make them like these anymore. It's a darn shame. Both are 10 pound guitars and I love that
O.m. goodness.. Wow... & Wow... Thank you for your *self-do diligence* sincerly.rlgiii
You were not lying. What a beautiful guitar. Thx Trog 🎸
Besides the stores mentioned, Veneman in MD and VA had custom run Lps 1980 or maybe '79. I know Cintioli in Philadelphia also early 80s.
The amount of "pearliness" and degree of yellowing in those trapezoids on that first K-Zoo LP... mmmm. I wish all LP's looked that way. Just beautiful!
I find it funny, we have a strings & things music shop in concord New Hampshire. That was something when you first said it.
Hey everyone, welcome back!!
Nice new Metallica Riffs from LUX AETERNA. Les Paul Sounds good as always.
The '82 30th Anniversary Les Paul shares many of the same specs. ABR-1 wire wire retainer, slim binding in the cutaway, deep carve, short neck tenon, one-piece body, and Tim Shaw pups. The gold top is 3-piece instead of the 2-piece on these guitars. The inlays are real MOP. Some have 3-piece necks. Mine has a 1-piece neck. I don't recall seeing one reviewed on this channel.
Not yet - I guess I never really took time to think about their year of production making them more important than they seem
I really like the blonde back, reminds me of my 74 75 flying v...nice playing, love the Kossoff licks
This playing demo just made the price of Tim Shaws double in price
I have a Heritage Standard 80 with a highly flamed top. Bought it new. I also have an original Strings and Things guitar Tele/Les Paul which is quite an interesting guitar
Would love to see that?
Looks like it was hung up on a string from the top pair of tuners leading to those marks on the back of the headstock. There’s a lighter mark on the other side at the same angle
Woot woot Trogly's guitars 🎸 🙌
Thanks for all you do
Thank you for watching!
Damn. What a great sounding guitar. Nicely done! 👍
I don’t blame u one bit for holding onto the Les Paul with the amber color. That top is insane! It’s got EVERYTHING going for it!
+100% that Amber, YES!
Can you make a video about James Hetfields Les Paul custom that is in some kind of purple satin finnish. He use it live now performing their new song but I have seen him use it pefore! It is sooooooo beautiful. Maybe you can talk about if its a one of a kind guitar for him etc 😊❤️❤️🙏🏼
I fell in love with this one.
Sounds great. What overdrive are you using?
I checked the pot codes, 100K tone and 300k volume, which make them pretty dark. Introduced in the 1970's, vs. the 500k t/v pots in the originals. Would be a lot brighter and crunchier with 500k pots.
Does anyone know why the trapezoid inlays on 59s are a red tint?
Did the switch cavity also have a shielding insert? It kinda looked like it.
I am 0% a Les Paul guy, but those may be the best pickups I have ever heard on your channel.
There's nothing like a GOOD set of Shaws
Oh yeah, I will have to second that. Shaw’s are fantastic sounding. If memory serves, he worked with Seth Lover to try to reproduce the original PAFs.
I’ve never owned a guitar with Tim Shaws, but something about the set in the amber colored Les Paul sounds super good!
Great show
Where's the audio??
I want one . I’d give anything to have one of those fr. Love it
Great vid as always! What scratch remover and polish to make a Gibson Tribute glossy do you recommend? Thank you!
Hi Jeffery, In this video I go over tuning a satin finish into a semi-gloss ua-cam.com/video/sxswnC3cBoA/v-deo.html
BRO, the sounds that came form that.
beautiful axe!
Always scared when Trogly has a guitar from my birth year. Lucky, he hasn’t had one from my birthday, otherwise, I might have to buy it.
I wanted to ask, what size strings do you use on your Les Paul's?
Finally you talk about the borders I like m more lighter thinner burstinger
Nice wood with thick paint mmmno thanks T
Would a inconspicuous piece of tape on back of the pickgaurd to hold the crack and prevent more be a ok thing to do?
Ibanez switch tip in style - flat topped
Nice top! I have an actual "Heritage made" with a similar top.
I would love to own that standard 82
This is one of your best video
Whats that word for figured wood moving? Shatoing? Just wondering how to spell it!
Wow that was funny. I used to have my singer sing into the my pickups my Heritage 80 when we were to STP!
Looks like it was hung by a wire around the top two tuners because there’s a faint line on the opposite corner of the headstock on the red burst one
That natural one is sweet just right in every way
Wicked 82/83 Bunch !!
That natural one is gorgeous! Not a fan of the clown burst. If that natural LP weighed 9 pounds instead of 10 pounds I’d like it a lot more. There’s a huge difference in Les Pauls that weigh between a 9 & 10 pounds. . You wouldn’t think 16 oz. would make that much a difference…but it’s a deal breaker for me. That extra pound feels like an extra 10 pounds after 45 minute set.
+100% Amber -99% Clown! ;p I use a Neotech strap that takes ALL the weight off. My Kalamazoo is just about 11 lbs & that strap it feels like nothing! Check them out (Mega or Super Ax)
Fancy the guitar, really dig the sound.
So funny, because I had four a couple of years another guitar with those pickups. You would think I would have kept it since I play with my fingers exclusively and really hot pickups like those would be suitable for that style. However, I simply didn't enjoy that model in the long term.
Very informative video
How does the discontinued Traditional line compare to these?
I had a standard 82 and bought it new, that thing was nice but with finance problems i had to sell it. And it was cherry sunburst too.
Welcome back, Troglodytes!
Idk if you are one for complements but your playing is definitely improving. Keep it up Austin!
I was going to comment how Austin's playing has improved a lot. Dynamics, rhythm and leads sound good and confident.
Killer tones!!
I think the KM sounds better imo. Another great video, thanks Austin.
what a great looking and sounding guitar! Also, your tone and playing have been improving, very tasty!
I am watching you for more than 2 years now, but I would like to say is that I really like the background music. 🙂
my regular 82 standard has Tim Shaws in it ,, im not the original owner so not sure if that's factory or not ,, guess i could have looked it up lol
yes, a 1982 Standard would also have Shaws!
Yeah there's no audio on this video,, you better re up it.
I always wondered why they never put a plastic shield on the backs to protect from buckle rash.
Yes I made fun of you for using chatoyant...and yes I've been using it, damn you!
Checkmate! Haha
Chatoyant - the shimmer from facets of gemstones when light is shone over them
Troglys been practicing! Well done sir
Still looking for a les Paul made the 039th day of 1982. My Birthday Guitar.
It looks like the cutaway is sharper on the heretigde 80 vs the standard 82
How do they decide whether to use a LIGHT WEIGHT or FULL WEIGHT tail-piece? Does it depend on the weight of the guitar or just random, or is there a reason for choosing light over full weight?
I bow to you, sensei.
I'm on my 2nd 1982 30th Anniversary...My current one has the bridge and tail up quite high.
That's another fun model I need to document in the future!
@@Trog I make it through your area to visit my boys in Athen...let's do this!
Trog getting his Bad Company on 👍
Do you have a double cream t top (bridge)? Im looking for one for my Les Paul KM.
Well... I do, but it is in a KM haha. That's a hard part to find separately!
@@Trog lol, ok but thanks for the reply!
