- What happens if someone falls overboard on a ship?
We follow man overboard procedures that consist of posting look outs and performing what's called a Williamson turn in which we maneuver the ship onto our reciriocal course in order to retrieve the person from the water.

Thank you! I like the explanation of these small everyday aspects of a life on board.
That was really interesting, Bryan! The description of the type of turn that you do and the special mustering stations might give the person a slight chance of being found in time. It would be really hard to see a person's head, even in totally flat seas. Thank you so much for this video, Bryan
Thanks for the upload, Bryan! Interesting stuff.
Keep up the great work Bryan. I have just discovered your channel and it is a great resource for anyone curious of what a modern day sailor's life is. Fascinating stuff and I sort of wish I could become a sailor after watching your videos.
I like the way you explained it,
Interesting video Bryan , appreciate it.
Great videos! Thank you!
Wow, what an amazing informative video. Such a very well planned rescue, very high tech procedures in place. Hope you never have to implement theses procedures. Thanks again Bryan, this was excellent information.
Interesting videos made keep up the good work
I hope you post more videos sir it helps me a lot as a 3rd year student
Excellent video
Good post
Great contents!
Great channel
Que grande eres... Un saludo desde Barcelona 🇪🇸
Please please please don’t ever let this happen to you!! Or anyone - what a nightmare- but glad to know there are procedures in place!
Are you Bryan’S mom?
Your vlogs are interesting Sir... I love watching your vlogs
Hello from Bremen / Bremerhaven
Great video ....nice blue water .....hopefully no one man overboatd
Another interesting video, Bryan. Hopefully you do not have to use these procedures. Safe travels.
Can you make a video about the engine room? Big ups to my boys working under deck!
US Navy 1973-1977. Machinery Repairman, civilian Machinist. I was surprised that the ship did not have a small machine shop. Things need repaired out at sea. I was stationed in Norfolk on two ships. USS BLANDY DD-943 & The USS VULCAN AR-5. The first was a destroyer at D & S piers, the VULCAN was at Pier 5 on the main base. Sail On Sailor. Fair winds and following seas.
The USS VULCAN was a destroyer tender. We repaired destroyers. Also, did a Lot of cruising on her.
Our cargo ships have a machine shop located down in the engine room. I have a video called “Touring A Modern Day Cargo Ship” that shows this shop during the engine room part of the tour
I was on the Kensington as the D/C
We never had drills for that way back then. Best not to fall over board. 😁
Hi Bryan, I like your content and am a new follower. I was wondering if the ships ever completely shut down and then have a cold start. If so, do you have any videos of that?
We shut the Main engine down every time we dock and only leave a generator or 2 running for power. I can try and get footage of the engineers getting the engine started but usually I’m involved in mooring or bridge duties so it may be difficult. I can try and compile some footage of how we get all the bridge equipment setup and tested for departure though. Thanks for your support of my channel!
Do you have information on how many man over boards actually happen and how many of them they never find them over the course of a year?
Do people out on deck not wear a lifebelt? You'd say they could make some form of water or manually operated alarm button, that signals the ship when someone falls in the water, telling the bridge crew something happened. Add a light and a small smoke canister perhaps.
The crew will wear a life vest when working over the side, such as when rigging the pilot ladder. They also wear them if they have to go out on deck in rough weather. I’m starting to see more ships start to incorporate a water activated man overboard AIS signal on these jackets. This sends an AIS signal on the ECDIS screen to indicate someone went over and where to find them.
👍🏻👍🏻🙂
I'm assuming due to pandemic the shore leave must have been put on hold.
Please do show us what things you can enjoy during leave when things get normal.
Will do! I believe they finally have lifted leave restrictions on most of the ships I work on, so I’d be happy to show those experiences in the future.
Would it be viable to have everyone carry a water proof GPS beacon that can hook up to the bridge? That way you can get a message and axact coordinates if anyone leaves the ship in the middle of the ocean. Maybe it's as simple as creating an app!
If everyone has a waterproof phone with GPS, they can log in on this app. Falling off can be measured by both sudden acceleration and a change in position from everyone else. If anyone falls off, everyone can get an alert about it.
...or does this already exist?
Ever sail on any of the K-Class ships?
Also, ΚΠΣ ‘23
Well that's horrifying
Sir can Fresh electrician cadet apply for a job in Hapag-Lloyd Shipping company??? They can hire a electrician cadet for a work on ship?
ever go to foreign ports
Which maritime academy did you attend?
Sailing to Thailand, I want to prove it.
Why not continue the starboard turn to circle back to the MOB ?
If you continue the circle to starboard you won’t be able to come back onto a reciprocal course before the location of the MOB. A round circle is another type of maneuver to recover a MOB, but usually for vessels that are more maneuverable. The Williamson turn is the standard recovery technique for these types of ships so that you can get onto the reciprocal course and post lookouts to spot the person in the water
Sir what is your position in the ship? I'm a maritime student thanks in advance have a safe voyage
Second mate usually. Best of luck in your studies!
But what if the person was from Mass Maritime? Would you even bother?
Or your Roomate from college..?
Do people survive the 100 foot fall to the water worst bellyflop ever
Rule number one of going to sea: don’t fall off the ship
Its only a paper bag, not plastic!
You can't practice life saving drills because they dont want PAPER in the water
Yeah that seems a little inflexible. Perhaps it's an unfortunate side effect of regulations banning ships from tossing trash overboard. But easily solved -- use some material that biodegrades in an acceptable manner, and is printed with a label "man overboard practice thingy".
"booey ? " Didn't know what he meant until he showed it. most places pronounce it as Boy. as in Buoyant/Buoyancy which I always thought was the intended purpose of the word Buoy

🤣
They get eaten by sharks. 🤣
