Traditional Irish fiddlers generally don't go to sessions with sheet music. Part of the tradition is memorizing the basic structure of the tunes not just to the mind, but most importantly: the heart.
It's rare that a marriage of Irish Traditional and classical music works. I think this lot might have cracked it. I would say, though, that it depends on having musicians that are both intimately familiar with their own genre and have a very good understanding of the other.
Um, wow? While I had the honor of hanging with Martin Hayes maybe 20+ years ago in Ann Arbor (back in a previous life as a fiddle player's wife), I sort of shunned trad Irish music as part of the fallout from that disastrous phase. That fat old X could never ever ever hope to play with such discipline and soul. We were having a lovely nice lunch and a chat. And Martin sat there aghast, as X literally destroyed a huge meaty sandwich in, like 8 minutes. As was his wont.
Gave me goose bumps. Love it. As a late to the party Irishman (it's a long story) I find I connect to my Irish roots very emotionally.
Really extracted and enhanced the beauty of the Celtic sound.
Couldn't agree more. I love the music and Hayes is something special.
The tunes are: 1. O'Neills March 2. Bob and Bernie 3. Jenny's Welcome to Charlie
Enjoy!
Caught this on WNYC earlier tonight - simply amazing, beautiful music.
How to get classical musicians tappin' their toes. Can't resist the call of the rhythm ☺. Well done, one and all!
Martin is so natural such a talented musician that was a lovely blend
+Eileen Nestor Methinks he makes it look easy and natural. You know he's been spending a lot of time in the woodshed to sound this great.
a joyous fusion meetup of classical/irish traditional and truly high quality ear candy ☺♪♫

Traditionally all the melody instruments in a session would play the melody. This is not a traditional Irish session.
Mighty!
Lovely!
... meley ???!?!?!
who did the arrangement? very cool, guys.
I wonder if the song title should be "Irish Medley" instead of "Meley"
superb
How do I get my hands on the sheet music to this - this is absolutely stunning?

I think Martin is trying to work them out of their straight jackets.......
They all have music stands, but Martin Hayes doesn't.
