thank you for this! i read a lot about the regency when i read pride and prejudice earlier this year, and it made me appreciate the work a hundred times more. i've read only the first two of austen's books, and this has given me a good background as i head towards the others

Good video. A curious thing about Austen is that the servants barely exist. They are there of course, but only rarely mentioned, and sometimes not at all. She was a trailblazer as you put it, but the ones who marry for love either don’t need the money/status (the men), or also get elevated in the process. She has a few examples of women who debased themselves, and as I recall, it’s never all that happy. I have to say that this is the first time I’ve heard Dickens described as a ‘realist.’ Let me go dig through the mountain of dust I’m my backyard to see if I can find anything confirming this.
I say, Duffy, I am dreadfully sorry for the lateness of this reply. There is a black hole in the UA-cam Studio which hovers about swallowing comments. I have just discovered 6 or 7 comments suddenly appeared! Your observation of the servants is really good. It had never occurred to me at all. As for the lovers in Austen's books, I take your point. The possible exception is probably Fanny Price and Edmund in Mansfield Park. Fanny turns down wealth and elevation and even Edmund, who could have more money by marrying Miss Crawford, chooses Fanny and his own modest income. As for Dickens, you are perfectly correct. He is not a Realist. The reason I mentioned him in that vein was because of his dealing with the more common and 'low' subject matters. I will unfortunately make lots of these errors as I do not prepare my videos. I sit down and start rabbiting to the camera. You are most welcome. You have interpreted Hardy very accurately. I would agree with you. What I respect most about Hardy is his honesty as a writer. He never wrote characters that went along with his opinions on life. He put worldviews to the test. I find him more addictive the more I read him. I'll try and do an historical video around his time period.
