Thanks so much for this! Lewis had the voice of a worldly angel, the greatest Drifters lead singer, and definitely someone the general public should know more about. Thanks again!
I just wish Louise Goffin or Carole would actually tell us who the singer is and end all the speculation. I love the Rudy Lewis vocals on The Drifters recording best of all. But I don't think it's Rudy on the Demo. He had a more beautiful, powerful and soulful voice than we hear on the demo. Just listen to Rudy sing the line "At night the stars put on a show for freeeeee . . . " Listen to his soulful phrasing, unique tonality, pronunciation of "stars" and elongation and vibrato of "for free" and I think you'll agree, it is not Rudy on the demo. The demo is a higher pitched voice and a much more simple, straightforward delivery. It's most likely Tony. Good, but no comparison to the outstanding performance of Rudy Lewis.
I had to listen to the song a few times to know who the singer relaly was ! Ben E King the rasp in his voice instantly makes this song his and realy no one eleses.. so good...
This is Rudy Lewis, listen to how he carry’s the notes not his voice in this clip. Possibly he rehearsed many times and eventually got it right for recording
I don't believe that is Rudy singing....if so he sounds tired and his voice is not strong... like on the beautiful record... l don't believe he was dubbed... no, there is a 1962 video of the Drifters performing the hit song.. on the roof somewhere.. with another singer lip syncing to Rudy Lewis voice... he had already passed. The dude looks NOTHING LIKE RUDY..RUDY WAS GOOD LOOKING TALL AND SLIM... A GREAT TALENTED GUY .. GONE TO SOON... WHAT A VOICE!!!!!!!!!!
Definitely not Gerry Goffin singing. Louise Goffin has already stated this is not her dad, and there are some youtube videos of Goffin singing which show that he is definitely not singing her.

I agree. Thanks for the nice comment.
Rudy succumbed to drugs and homophobia. Sorry you can't be with us today, brother. It's such a different world now.
But its is Ben E king doing this demo....
What a voice. For a long time Ben E King was my favorite, later it was Clyde McPhatter and now Rudy Lewis is my favorite.
rudy lewis just a beautiful voice my favourite drifters singer shame he passed so early rip my friend
George Benson and Rick Beato brought me here ...stunning voice
Saw Drifters Girl tonight this song hits different now I know Rudy Lewis's back story. RIP.

The purity of his voice is like deep water with moonlight drowning when it's not dancing on the surface.

Nope its Ben E King ! Lewis recorded it with the drifters...

I have a feeling this is Freddie Scott, not Rudy Lewis. Scott also worked with Carole King and it sounds much more like him.
Oh gosh. I originally thought it was Gerry Goffin himself singing and somebody corrected me. Now this??? LOL
@@DannyBkyn I'm not 100% sure, but I do think it's quite plausible.
Rudy Lewis was a brilliant natural. Gone too soon.
Definitely not Gerry Goffin singing. Louise Goffin has already stated this is not her dad, and there are some youtube videos of Goffin singing which show that he is definitely not singing her.
I thought it was him. Apparently, so did the others who posted this. Do you know who it is?
It's Rudy Lewis singing - he was the lead singer of The Drifters after Ben E. King left the group. Thanks for the heads up - I'll edit the info.
It’s Tony Orlando not Rudy Lewis singing
Not true. Tony Orlando and Dawn recorded this song 9 years later.
That’s true but she also used him in a studio nine years earlier and actually 12 years earlier to record demos
I've heard enough Tony Orlando & Dawn songs to know that this is definately NOT Tony Orlando.
For sure. This is NOT Rudy Lewis.
No that's rudy lewis voice
