The Flying V was introduced in the 1950s, a time when Sci-Fi was the flavour of the moment. It's no surprise therefore that the V was met with mixed views - it continues to turn heads and divide opinion to this day. The new models retain all of the V's most definitive mojo. The Antique Natural version is designed as a direct tip of the hat, while the B-2 brings hotter pickups and stripped-back looks that ooze attitude.
The Gibson Explorer was released alongside the Flying V in the late 1950s, also to a mixed reaction. Fast forward to the 21st Century, and Gibson's new Explorer features a number of design tweaks that strike the balance between old-school and precision.

The Captain is proof that lessons and jamming with more experienced players makes you a better player. He has made some serious strides in the past year or so.
THIS /\
Absolutely !
Did he recently take lessons?
I still wish he'd sit down with the guys at least 10, 20, or 30 minutes a day and just work on basic ascending/descending patterns though. Alternate picking all the way through. Not to shred, but just to have more technical skills to express himself more.
Ryan Flinn with Justin guitar. They filmed them.
You guys rocked in this one. Famous Explorer player: Allen Collins - Lynyrd Skynyrd - Free Bird lead played on that guitar. 👍
Also Matthias Jabs of Scorpions
Jeff Carlisi of 38 Special played an Explorer clone hand made by Georgia luthier-sold maple body with inlaid rosewood pickguard-must way a ton!
James hetfield had a gibson explorer back around the Lighting and Puppets era along with his gibson V
Indeed and Allen's Explorer was an original layer 50s too. So all the badassery
I came here specifically to say that. Run the strap over the top and bang out ‘Call me the Breeze’ 😎
"You have, uh, changed guitars to the Christopher Columbus signature model" this edit part was utter hilarity. 10/10 for cap throwing dad jokes over Pete's head
Dad jokes?
Can confirm. I'm a dad and I would have made that kind of joke.
Whta if I want them all? Pete should play more with 'buckers... he sounds amazing. Lee seems happier than ever. Hail to the Captain!
Lee those lessons are really paying off. Pete ,sounding phenomenal as always
honestly one of the best intro jams ever!!!
He also used it on Knockin On Heaven's Door.
Captain's chops have noticeably improved over the last couple of months. Awesome stuff!
It's the added confidence in what he's playing that really shows, the notes sound better when they're played with intent.
"Is there a more manly look?"
"Yes, on your knees!"
Awesome!
It's how you can tell they are both married.
Well, that and the dad jokes... 😏
Allen Collins from Lynyrd Skynyrd only used the Explorer and had the Tremolo tailpiece! Watch Free Bird live from Oakland Coliseum from 1977 on UA-cam it's awesome!
Still gives me chills and makes me run around the room jumping and playing air guitar like I was 12 still😛
He got the Explorer from Clapton too. He used Firebirds before
That moment when the final solo is kicking in and the crowd is going bonkers is total, beautiful magic.
He used fire birds and a strat as well. But by far my favorite was the explorer with maestro bridge.
Allen Collins played an Explorer and that’s about all that matters. 🤘🏻
That awkwardness when you don't know how to hold V guitar when sitting down. :D
Pete goes into a massive riff/solo jam to remind Lee what he is aiming for... but Lee is definitely playing the best guitar he has ever played
Keep it up! Old dogs do learn new tricks.
That jam that's starts around 21:52
Wow....sounds amazing and keeps me coming back to this video
Rory, you need a tumbleweed graphic to roll across the screen in the whistling wind after one of the Captain's 'jokes'.
14:02 Lee accidentally writes a Greta Van Fleet song
But, that's impossible. Those dudes have NEVER heard of any bands outside the US remember? Led who? What's a Rush?
They are 100% authentic with ZERO influences.
@@jfiery u mad bro?
@@noname.___ nah, too many real things in the world to be pissed about than to really be bothered over a couple of kids from somewhere in the Midwest of the US denying any knowledge of Zep or that they may have influenced their music. Was just making a joke that obviously didn't land. Thanks for being concerned though. Haha
@@jfiery they don't deny it lol do your research before you insult people
@@noname.___ they said their primary influence was Aerosmith in one interview, in others they said other obsure bands. Even Robert Plant got a laugh out if it. Maybe lately they're fessing up to the obvious, if so good for them. Maybe you're thier manager or an extremely dedicated fan boy. So congrats on a job well done defending their amazing originality. From stage mannerisms, to costumes, to licks those guys are one of a kind. Enjoy your crusade, Im not the 1st to make this point so best of luck reaching out to the rest of those who think like I do. It's going to take a lifetime to accomplish so get to it. But if you need some kind of personal validation that you're right you won't get it here so please find another parked car to chase. This really doesn't matter to me. Enjoy your day.
My main guitar for the past [nearly] 20 years has been an Epiphone '67 Flying V. I find they're very comfortable to play sitting down if you know how to hold them... the caveat being if you're trying to sit on the floor.
I think the V between your legs is the best position to play guitar. Pretty similar to some classical players.
Somewhere around 24:00 you can witness Lee very breafly turn into Rob.
Their is a great Gibson Flying V
guitar player from England still ripping it up
with great music and writing skills !
His name is Andy Powell of the fantastic Wishbone Ash !!
When I started watching Anderson’s years ago, they were a group of guys I literally, strange as it seems, sort of grew to know.it’s like a UA-cam family. I hope that is taken as a compliment, because it’s exactly that. It was a cool place to “virtually” hang out. Lee was a very cool owner who noodled around a little, and then would let Rob take over. He had some very cool, close friends who obviously help him, and give back to him because he was there for them. Now, he owns me of the most popular music establishment on the planet. Lee not only understands the products he sells, in addition, I believe he is an inspiration for young to middle aged people. At his age, and I mean this; the man is a guitarist, who through the obvious love of what he does, kicked that door down, man, and is truly a player now. He’s to you Lee!
Once you finish the series can you choose your favorite of each model and make a video compiting against each other?
"In the morning, don't say you luv me...cuz I'll only kick you out of the door..."
I love the black V it sounds awesome with the plimsoul and rock/power chords.
17:24 :D Seriously this is my favorite Anderton's video recently. Superb jamming, channeling the Captain's inner rock demon, Pete stellar as usual, Lee's stank face during the dirty bits. Solid Gold.
I love playing Vs while sitting. Makes me sit straight and not slouch so much for some reason.
Gary Moore played an Explorer before he went more blues
And you should ABSOLUTELY! do a sound like Albert King, 100%!!!!!!!
I couldn't watch past 3:30. Nothing pains me more than watching non-Flying V players fidget around reviewing a guitar they can't hold comfortably. I play only Gibson Vs because they lock into my lap and I don't even need a strap sitting. When standing (with a proper length strap), there is no useless wood in the way of fret access. They are so natural and comfortable...this is like watching someone try to put a glove on upside-down then telling me if it is a good glove.
Must admit I love the Natural wood looking 'V' :)
The Captain's wailing...great progress shown... kudos.
Lee is really getting good on guitar. Nice tasty licks excellent tone!! He dosent stray into shreddy nonsense!!
I like to hear the Captain getting ever so much better and more inspirational with his guitar playing.
I'm loving the new range. Another great vid gents.
Bring back the blanket!!!!!!
I really dig Danish Pete's playing. I could listen to Pete and Lee jam all day long.
Having fun...what guitar playing should be about! Enjoying these Gibson videos.
Once again, Captain Lee Anderton finds his hidden inner rocker. Somewhere, Rob Chappers smiles at seeing Lee tune his low E string down to D!😎
Is it just me or has the Captains playing improved significantly? Well done mate!
Greaaat! Love to hear pete on some humbuckers🖤
Nice playing lads. Something about the Explorer in natural has me.
Yes completely agree. I want one
I just got one of rhe Antique V's the other day, and i cant put it down. Its currently in my lap as i type this. Its so good 🤤🤘🏻
I wish you could post photos in the comments because a screenshot at 9:03 is my favourite thing
Oh my god that is funny! This years best screenshot.
The Capt.'s playing was really good in this video dang
I normally have these vid's playing in the background and listen to them without watching. I can usually spot if it's Lee or Pete soloing. Today I got it wrong - Nice one, Kudos!
Rick Derringer played Explorer in the late 70's
You must feel great about your playing compared to the minor pentatonic days lee
Still very functional scale but knowing how scales combine with chord progressions has revolutionised your playing
You're proper great compared to a year ago
Good on you and Pete man ...you are a glorious player
Love your videos with you both
Thank you
Wow the new design of the flying V....! It looks exactly like a flying V.?.!.?.!
Idk id rather have the Christopher Columbus signature model
Cosmo Heath lol
AS much as I love Chappers, that was very pleasing to watch you guys jam.
Explorers are a bit unwieldy at first because of how large the body is, but the way they balance when played standing up feels extremely nice.
Matthias Jabs from Scorpions played an Explorer and Rudolf Schenker played a V
Matthias played a Hamer blitz
oprah_did_9/11 his first guitar with the Scorpions was a 1976 Gibson Explorer, later he got guitars build from a german guitar builder
@@siwiaz5494 His first guitar with them was a 70s strat, and not to long after he got a Gibson Explorer. Around the Animal Magnetism tour he got his second Explorer, which he customized with the black stripes to make his signature look (In addition to his Blackie strat with the first style floyd rose + routed humbucker). Around 1986-87 he got with the Gibson custom shop to build an Explorer 90% of the body (Explorer E90), with a floyd rose and 24 fret neck. More recently both Rudi and he get their guitars from Boris Dommenget, with Rudi making some absurd and cool V models (mostly following car brands/styles) and Jabs mostly following the E90 style to make his own signature Dommenget EX90 along with a signature custom strat (Dommenget MasterCaster) with a floyd rose HSH setup and beefier body/headstock.
I love the jam so much. You guys are great and having a blast
Im kinda missing Rob and how he can make Vs looking ergonomicaly well made guitar.
I recently purchased the Gibson Explorer in Antique Natural with BurstBuckers 2 and 3. But.....i love the power and clarity of the mighty Gibson Dirty Fingers pickups. My Explorer is awesome. But i wish it had come with Dirty Fingers stock. Oh well. Those Dirty Fingers sound awesome in that black Explorer!
phenomenal playing yet again guys! My GAS just keeps getting worse! ✌🏼
Great to see Lee and Pete having so much fun. Guitars are cool. Gibson are killing it.
I thought the same thing about my explorer case when I got my explorer, it's a huge case!! Lol love what you guys do, keep up the good work, love from middle America 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Thanks for reviewing these, I think they are ace guitars and often get ignored in favour of the Les Paul and SG.
Slash used an Explorer for the recording of Locomotive
And knockin on heavens door
Claudio Sanchez from Coheed & Cambria plays an explorer.
Nice Ronnie Wood tribute for yesterday by playing stay with me and happy birthday Charlie Watts for today , oh my
Captain & Pete, two guys you can't imagine without a Flying V!
Gotta love the look The Captain (rock eye) gets when he proceeds to rock! Perfect example in the intro!
And again I find myself singing.. "Stay with me.. Stay with me.. For tonight you better stay with me"
Stay with Lee....
I never liked the look of V's....until I saw Michael Schenker play one.
HOLY CRAP the BurstBucker 2 with dirt on Pete's guitar sounds unreal! I love it! There's just something about the tones you can get from a V, man. SO good. I gotta get me one of these!
Real impressed with the tones of the V. And, I’m not a V guy either.
they are awkward but have a special sound! i love em!
V's are the most comfortable to sit and play. Resting the v crotch on your thigh, once you're used to it, it's the best. Sick of people who don't play V's saying it's akward. Once you're used to it, you'll agree.
Cap, you're right about the switch on the Explorer. I have a Legator Ninja (basically an Explorer) with a Floyd Rose with the pup switch with the knobs and it is a PAIN to get to on the fly!
I love Vs, but the best part of the video is Lee's pose tips
Lee's tone with the Modern explorer in that solo was awesome!
The captain playing skills have improved a lot!
Damn Captain your playing has gotten so good lately. Keep it up dude. Love you guys!
Rickey Medlocke sold me on the Explorer back in the 1970s. My '76 reissue sleeps under a red silk sheet :P
U2s "The Edge" also plays an Explorer.
Every good ad starts by complaining how uncomfortable the product is ahah.
Jokes aside, great video and great playing as always.
Explorers are underrated, sure the shape isn’t to everyone’s taste but ergonomically they are much better than you would expect and they certainly shouldn’t be thought of as just a metal guitar.
The hole video, it was like: 'In the morning'... just that line... and than, it hits me, as they were playing it the 3rd time.... 'DON'T SAY YOU LOVE ME'... and now - I know, what I will hear the rest of the day ;)
Pete is having way too much fun with that V. Love his playing and demos.
That intro jam was like Eric Clapton and Albert King jammed over Sgt Pepper's lonely hearts club band!
More like jamming on Stay With Me by the Faces.
@@seanbean4682 Well spotted Bit of down and dirty Ronnie wood
Lacquered on the back of the neck. Ah man Pete is hilarious. These guys have the best job in the world.
Gibson used to do a Lzzy Hale Signature Explorer in white a few years ago.. They also recently released a Lzzy Hale Signature in black probably two years ago. Now Epiphone has the white signature model for her. Both of them are sexy instruments, with the gold accents and hardware. Been wanting a black one since they were released.
Intro kinda sounded like a slowed down "Stay with Me" by R.Stewart & the Faces. Some very cool axes there Capt & Pete.
THANK YOU for leaving this comment 4 years ago. Watching old Andertons vids and couldn’t place the tune for some reason.
Would have driven me crazy, thank you😂
Clapton played one live in the 70s. Also Lynard Skynard.
Do a blind fold challenge with the new Les Paul's with some of the old 2019/18 models and a custom shop or two thrown in.
I suspect that even when blindfolded, most people would be able to tell whether they're playing a V, an Explorer or a Paul. Somehow.
@@Dudfoot I was saying do it with the new and old Les Paul's, not the explorers and Vs
I'm in the process of buying that Original V. It's so good.
Phil Campbell from Motorhead played an explorer i think?🤷♂️
Sam Warrener yeah man
That was a perfect intro jam for the V Great! Pete's V sounds perfect! what tone. Maybe it's because I'm getting old but the Dirty Fingers don't appeal to me much anymore. But I bet the B2 plays great otherwise. oh and back in the mid-'70's Paul Stanley played a black V and Ace Frehley was known to grab a natural finished Explorer on tour. Also Matthias Jabs of the Scorpions a master Explorer player with Rudolf Schenker on his V
Brilliant intro jam. Pete is smoother than baileys running down Jennifer Laurence. Lee s lessons are really helping his chops too.
The reason they sound different despite having exact same hardware is the massive chunk of wood behind the bridge on the explorer. It gives it a thicker sound.
The fart at 17:24 though, lol
All these years tuning in to watch the likes of Rob and Pete deliver the fireworks all over the fretboard and it turns out the Captain always had a whole lotta tasty pyrotechnics up his sleeve!!
Both guitarists from the band Airborne play explores also but they maybe not so famous but a killer Australian rock band sort of like AC/DC
Some (more or less) famous Explorer users: Rudolf Schenker, Rick Medlocke, Pete Willis, Joel O´Keefe, Rock 'n' Rolf.
Oops, Matthias Jabs rather than Rudulf Schenker. Oh well, same band.
Just want to say that the feel of Lee is great!!! The other guys in the videos might be better musicians or better players, but for some reason I just love the soul of Lee's playing. The lessons have payed of. And dare I to say that I hope he does not get much better than he is at the moment? Great stuff. So thumbs up for the Captain.
omg...seriously glorious tones...I want that black one!
You should do a ‘odd shape’ challenge, explorer vs meteora etc 👊
At the intro while Pete was soloing with the jamming chord , Lee played Rod Stewart -Stay with me...
Here's a real all the explorer player Lita Ford from the runaways she definitely had some amazing sounds on that guitar got to love Lita Ford listening
I'm sure that someone will hate this idea, but I wish Gibson would put the V headstock on an SG. Who knows... maybe it would help reduce the neck dive issues a bit. Not to mention, look cool af.
Loved that intro jam. Very Beatle-esque.
The Vs are missing the rubber? strip that was meant to help sat down playing. I'm sure someone will do an after-market add on though.
When are you doing the jr and special??
Okay, that natural Explorer looks absolutely freaking gorgeous, not gonna lie
