    In this video, we compare these two very similar pistols. Walther has had the P-22 handgun in their catalog for quite some time now and it has proven to be a very successful and popular design. The light weight, easy handling characteristics, and familiar profile lend it as a firearm that a wide variety of people can gravitate to and enjoy. The Ruger SR-22 is a new gun from an established company that has been known for making quality firearms for decades. It is, for all purposes, a copy of the Walther P22. The profile and design features are nearly identical. A few things have been changed like the location of the magazine release, the safety design, etc.
    Both guns have their merits and minor drawbacks, but hopefully this video will leave you a little more informed about the similarities and differences that each gun offers.
    Personally, I prefer the Walther P-22, although the feel and profile of the SR-22 is hard to mistaken. Mainly, it's because of the obvious design aspects "borrowed" from the Walther.
    If you enjoy these videos, be sure to let me know. We have a lot of concepts like this that we can discuss.
    These fine firearms are available from:

    The walther P22 went through a revision recently that negates the problems with feeding some kinds of ammo and has added a de-cocker. Id love to see a side by side using the newest versions of both pistols.

      J P Excellent decision, and very easy to find accessories for it. I've had one for 4 years and it still shoots all types of .22lr. It is capable of 1" groups or better at 15 yds with several popular brands. IMO this is a fun reliable accurate plinker, and you get the Ruger guarantee...either way you go, enjoy.

    My dad has the SR22 and so does my friends dad. They are awesome little guns. They are very accurate and reliable and extremely fun to shoot. Walther may have come out with it first but Ruger perfected it and made it more affordable.

    Love my p22. Shoots great and my 110lb wife can practice all day long with it. And it has never jammed, no matter what brand of ammo I've stuffed through it.

    Got a p22 in 2010 for my wife's small hands. It was ergonomically excellent, and it helped my kids get a lot of experience clearing jams. Sold it. (Never tried the upgraded version.)
    Got an sr22 last month. It feels smoother and more solid. Gonna keep this one.

    I’ve had a p22 for 12-13 years. I walked into my local gun store when Smith&Wesson was importing the p22, fell in love with it and ordered one on the spot and have never regretted it. The original p22 that I had was fairly choosy about ammunition, definitely preferring quality brands. Several months ago it began having continuous ejection problems regardless of what ammunition I fed it. I called Walther and they emailed me a return authorization and shipping label that day. I sent it back and in less than 2 weeks received a brand new p22q as a replacement. Everything was at Walther’s expense under their warranty. I cannot say enough about their service and warranty. I have always loved my p22 and now love my p22q and unreservedly recommend Walther. It is a dream to shoot and, with a little practice as easy to take apart, clean and return to service as any gun I’ve ever owned. Great gun, great company.

    I would love to hear them do this review again, now that it's been almost 3 years. Based on all the recent research I've done, I'm pretty sure most people would choose the SR22 over the P22 today (unless they're just huge Walther fans). Just like the LCP being a copy of the Kel Tech but becoming better than the Kel Tech, I believe the SR22 has become better than the P22 even though it's a copy. Got to give Ruger credit there. They're good at improving pre-existing designs.

    • @bmxxxxxxxx
      @bmxxxxxxxx 8 років тому +2

      +Forrest Metzger I agree. The Ruger (especially considering the price and +1 mag) has probably surpassed the Walther. However, in California you can't get the Ruger, and the Walther is a good starter pistol, or training pistol if you want to graduate to the PPQ.

    • @joey24698
      @joey24698 8 років тому

      Why can't you get them in CA? they have just about every safety feature there is, I'm curious....Thanks

    • @bmxxxxxxxx
      @bmxxxxxxxx 8 років тому +5

      Joe Barry Ugh. So you could get them initially when they came out. California has a "handgun roster", and each handgun gets certified for sale for a certain amount of time (usually a few years). It is expensive for manufacturers to comply with all the testing it takes to get on the list. Once it falls off, you have to re-submit. If you make *any* changes to the firearm, even aesthetic ones, you have to re-submit.
      I'm pretty sure the SR22 got an aesthetic change, not a functional change, and fell-off the list. So now you can only get a used one from someone who already bought it. If a gun isn't selling well in California, a gun maker may not bother with the expense of getting it back on the list.
      You can go look at the current roster, which includes lots of revolvers, Glocks, Springfields, etc. But little or no Walthers, Smith/Wesson, etc.
      It's lame, there are always suits filed against the DOJ but nothing ever changes. Also, we have a 10-round limit on mags, so even if you wanted to buy a full-size Springfield or a Glock 17, you can only put a 10 rounder in it.
      Cheers~

    I picked up a Walther P22Q this past summer and some other things must have changed. Takedown on mine is simple and straight forward. The captive guide rod may have been a solution to prior assembly issues. The Walther P22Q is a great shooter. Mine shipped with 2 mags and I purchased an extra one.

    My brother actually wore out a p22 slide because it is some kind of Zamak alloy. The slide release wore through slide after 10 thousand rounds and exposed a steel pin in the slide at that point and that is where the frame cracked. On the positive side that pistol was extremely accurate and very easy to use.

    Dissing a gun " 'cause it's a copy of ...." is ridiculous. Most guns are often " a copy" of another gun - often with slight improvements. I didn't look at the S&W offering for the .22LR pistol, nor did I look at Walther's; I handled the SR-22 and it felt great- much like a 1911 feels great in my hands- so did the SR-22. Aluminum anodized slide. Stainless (threaded) barrel. Ambidextrous safety. three dot adjustable sights. Great looks. Comfortable fit in the hands. And a Ruger with Ruger support !
    Ironically- the video mentions that the SR22 is a copy of the P22--- not viewed as being good- yet the LCP is a copy of the Keltec -which is better than the Keltec. There are very few truly innovative designs out there that could be said to be 100% original-- most copy aspects of other designs as a base-whether it be the design of the safeties, grip angle, slide features, etc. Besides- who would want a 100% design from scratch- it would never meet the reliability requirements of consumers anyways...
    I've got a few Rugers; none have been disappointments- I am sure that the SR-22 won't be either.

    Here is the thing, everyone that owns an automatic .22 wants to buy huge bulk boxes of junk ammo so they can run out and spray rounds everywhere, and then complain when it jams. That bulk ammo is best used for bolt action or revolver firearms. Buy quality ammo to shoot in a quality automatic 22 firearms! Period

      I've never owned a P22 but that is what people complain about. I know that cheap 22 ammo is gonna exactly that. Cheap and possibly not made to spec. I mean 22 premium ammo is still absolutely dirt cheap.

    Traded my Walther away yesterday- had it two weeks, lost $150 on the trade. Got it for xmas from my wife. Sorriest pistol I ever owned. Got a Ruger SR22 in trade. Instantly all my ftf fte, ftc problems went away. Talked to Walther they told me to only use CCI mini mag. I was, but also wanted to use other ammo. Would not shoot other HI-Vel ammo, and most definitely no non-premium ammo. They said it was in the manual. It's not, only to use 22LR. If it takes a specific cartridge it should be posted on the box. Internet is full of videos on how to modify to make it work . I call BS on this gun. I got the gun to shoot, not have to repair it new out of the box, or send it in new for warranty, or not be able to use it if I can't find special ammo.. Stay away from this Jammin'Jenny.

    Ruger is late to the game with their copies but they are always improved over the originals. The LCP is a nicer P3AT. The LC9 is a nicer PF9. The SR22 is a much better P22. The P22s I've handled were all super picky and jam-o-matics. They also slung the brass straight at my face. The SR22 has eaten whatever I feed it and ejects to the right. It has been so much better than the Walther in my experiences.

    I saw my first Ruger manufacturing defect about a month ago. I was visiting my family in WV and my dad wanted to buy himself a small retirement present. He went to Cabela's to purchase a Ruger Single 6 (His first gun as a kid in 1963) . He ended up buying a Single 10. We brought it home to shoot and ammo just wouldn't fit in it. The cylinder was misbored. He took it back and exchanged it for a very nice stainless single six with 2 cylinders and it worked flawlessly.

    Bought a sr22 when they first came out and put over 10,000 rounds through it in a few months and ate everything I put through it. Had alittle issue in the first models with slight gouges on the slide so I sent it back to ruger and they replaced the slide and even gave me a new barrel. When I called they said they didn't hear of anyone putting that many rounds through one so I'm sure they enjoyed seeing how it held up. Love the gun, just wish mine came with a threaded barrel

    I have an M&P, and I'm very pleased. Haven't found any ammo it won't cycle. Yet. Also, the sights were dead-on from the factory. Best feature by far is the size. I am not an elf, nor a little person, nor a woodland fairy, and therefore the full size frame makes everything easier and more comfortable for my hands.

    I have some "Segmented HP CCI 22LR" 32 grain 1640fps hollow point ammo for my P22 here & when I fire it, fire is the correct word to use. Big ball of fire, lots of fun. Really like this little gun. Great vid guys.

    I can only say that my SR22 will outperform my friends Walther P22 on a regular basis. I have never had a ftf or tfe but the Walther would have two per mag with CCI. His gun was only a few months older than mine but has not been shot as much so he may have some break in issues.

    Someone posted this four years ago, but just to bump it up the list: The SR22 comes with two interchangeable grip sleeves, one thin and one thick, that fit on the frame to accommodate different hand sizes or shapes. I kept waiting for them to bring it up.

    I purchased my Walther P22 in 2005 after returning from deployment and it came with 2 magazines. I have fired over 4000 rounds through it of various manufacturers with out a single issue of misfeed/misfire. The Walther P22 has been completely reliable and has functioned flawlessly thus far. I have not been able to shoot it as much this last year due to the "22LR ammo shortage" we have all been experiencing. I can't wait for the B.S. to end! So I can shoot the weapon I want when I want too again!

    I have the walther an older one, the slide broke down through the ejection port, sent it in and it came back with a newer style slide. It’s a ok piece, I don’t like the mag disconnect, that being said I’d pick the ruger .

    I've had a P22 for about 5 years, and love it. That being said, I have had some failures to feed with bulk ammo. It feeds great with Winchester SuperX, or other more expensive ammo, but Walmart bulk is a little iffy.

  • @richlongii
    @richlongii 8 років тому

    I've had my Walther since 2003 and I have shot literally 3000 rounds through it. I can count on one hand the times I've had a problem with failure to feed. I have used all types of ammo and shot it so filthy and never had a problem, I just love this gun. I also have taught my daughter how to shoot with this pistol when she was eight years old. For those who think it has no self-defense ability, I shot a coyote in the yard he was about 35 yards away from me and the the coyote was about 50 pounds dropped him on the first shot. So I believe this gun can save your life.

    Just watched April 2024. I have an older P22 and the problem I found was the it chambered a round, the hammer was too tall and hit the slide. That's why people say the P22 is picky about ammo. I filed down the hammer and now it shoots any ammo.

  • @Mardasee
    @Mardasee 8 років тому

    I got an old P22 with the short barrel. It has the key slot lock mechanism. The slide guides got chewed up a bit after shooting around a brick of ammo and so I sent it back to S&W in Massachusetts. I got it back with a note saying the P22 is not designed for heavy use. But I only shot a brick worth! The next problem I encountered is the safety now drops while firing. I want to glue the damn thing. Unfortunately before I had these problems I also purchased the long barrel P22 and today it's still new in the box.

    You guys should have included the M&P 22. Two extra rounds in the magazine and very easy to clean and take apart. Similar barrel to the Walther. Overall, my favorite .22, non-target pistol.

    When I was shopping for a .22 I rented a P22 at my local
    range and they gave me my money back! Out of 100 rounds
    it failed maybe 15-20 times. Now I own an SR-22 and have put 600-800
    rounds through it using numerous different brands of ammo and have had
    maybe 5-10 total failures.

    The SR 22 is the handgun I'll shoot when someday, due to either age or arthritis, i won't be able to shoot my Glock 19 any more. The ease of taking it apart for cleaning and putting it back together is the number one reason.

    I bought my Walther P-22 twelve years ago and it came with the threaded barrel. A few months later I got a letter frm the Calif. State Attorney General letting me know through no fault of mine, the pistol was illegal to own. I had to take the pistol back to the dealer I purchased it from and the dealer had to ship the weapon to S&W to have a Calif. approved barrel put on. Took about two weeks to have it returned to me with a document stating the pistol is now Calif. approved.
