    Eddie Rayner on keyboards and piano is an absolute genius. The instrumental he plays before Leaky Boat is called “Pioneer.”
    He wrote music and rearranged a large number of Split Enz songs for live performances and two albums under ENZSO (Split Enz with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra) some amazing music with a huge mix of New Zealand artists singing lead on classic Enz tracks. I was lucky to see the concert series live in Melbourne in 1997 I think it was. Just amazing.

    I just discovered your reactions. I'm so glad you discovered Split Enz and "Six Months in a Leaky Boat" in particular. This is my all-time favorite song. I even have it in my will to have it played at my funeral someday in hopes it will make people smile. This song came out when I was in college and it reminded me that growing up would probably be a waste of time. So I decided then to stop trying to do that, and instead, made a career out of fantasy publishing. Between this song, and the book, Peter Pan, I'm covered. Glad you both liked this magical song. Andf this live version is my favorite.

    This song was released around the time of the Falklands war, and it was banned on the BBC, as they thought it was a commentary on the war, but it wasn't! It was written by Tim Finn, and it is really about a six month bout of depression he went through.

    • @bodybalanceU2
      @bodybalanceU2 Рік тому

      it was pathetic how the british government constantly over stepped with banning pop songs - i remember they were good at doing that for innocuous reasons that i found ridiculous - this was about brainwashing the public in supporting that stupid falklands war - every other country thought it was stupid so the british govt had to make sure their citizens blindly supported that stupid war so banning innocous songs and opposite opinions was the way to go

    Like all good art - it's about two things at once. Lots of colonists travelled to Aoteoroa (New Zealand) in leaky boats. The literal meaning Tim Finn's bout of depression the allegory. They're very clever song writers. The two brothers together are an unmistakable sound.

    So glad you were introduced to the Split Enz. I've been a fan of the Finn brothers since they first came out and was saddened when they broke up. I of course became a fan of Neil Finn and Crowded House and followed Tim Finn's solo work. In 1992 I got to go to a Crowded House concert where they played about half a dozen Crowded House songs when Neil Finn announced that they had a special guest and brought his brother on stage, breaking out with "Six Months in a Leaky Boat". The crowd went nuts with many people holding up Split Enz album covers. The rest of the set was Split Enz.

    Plus for all of us New Zealanders this song has a special meaning. It's like an anthem of our history as well as a metaphore for Tim's own personal struggle. It expresses that pioneering spirit of people braving the wild pacific ocean to sail here from Europe and how they arrived in an untamed, and not so welcoming land at the bottom of the world to literally build a new way of life for themselves. That beautiful intro really puts you out in the ocean with them....we are Oceania.

      The song has a special meaning for me too. In 1953 my mother, who was 18 at the time and worked in the British Home Office as a trainee clerical assistant, made friends with a girl who'd come over from New Zealand for the 1951 Exhibition and stayed until Queen Elizabeth's coronation two years later. In that time she walked around Britain, broke her neck, got married and had a child. She and her husband eventually settled in Gisborne as part-owners of a successful vineyard, and although they kept in touch for many years I never took advantage of their offer to visit them even though they made it clear I'd be treated as one of the family. So whenever I hear this I'm reminded of lost opportunities.

    Six months in a leaky boat was written about Captain Cook's voyage sailing from England to the great unknown (Australia and New Zealand) back in the 1770's. Can you imagine spending six months in a tall ship sailing into the great unknown in a big wooden boat? That little piece at the start with the piano is called Pioneer which leads into Six months in a leaky boat on their 1982 album Time and Tide.

    Interesting that no-one has mentioned what the song is about. It is about the men who sailed to NZ with Captain Cook who then colonised NZ. Of interest was that the song was banned in the UK during the Falklands war. Apparently they were feeling a bit sensitive about the number of casualties they were having with some people believing that it was a reference to the quality and ability of the UK Navy.
