London on track for highest number of teenage killings in more than a decade

  • The statistics on the number of deaths from knife crime are stark. Some 548 people were murdered using a knife or bladed object in 2020.
And if that wasn't shocking enough, an even more staggering fact is that the number of teenagers murdered with a knife in London is on the rise. Seventeen teenagers have been murdered this year alone.
The Metropolitan Police say we are now on track for the highest number of deaths in over a decade.

I'm 19 and was a victim of knife crime when I was mugged last night, thankfully I managed to get away uninjured but have had stuff taken from me. I have told the police what happened but feel I cant make a statement as you cant do this anonymously, kids can find out so much from a name these days; all they have to do is ask around and they know where you live. I don't feel safe making a statement - This is yet another part of the problem
From my perspective, going through my teenage years over the last decade; the answer to knife crime isn't clear cut. Many blame the lack of youth services like youth clubs, but the truth is these kinds of places just don't appeal to teenagers. I don't know what the solution is but a different approach needs to be looked into.

I hear what all of you are saying. children are impressionable. They copy what they see or experience. Decades ago there was a form of prison called Borstal for dangerous criminal youths. I'm not sure if it was the right sort of place to send young men/boys. Compulsory National service disciplined young men. Again not sure if that works either. It suits some but ruins others I've witnessed. Youth clubs helped in our area and other wards in the town. Trouble did start during lockdown when they were closed. Stop eating red meat/McDonald's etc. It raises the temper. Some prison's today put prisoners on vegetarian diets. It calmed them down. Teaching them to grow veg and fruit helped too. It's helped many young ex-offenders who now in their 50s with families and a good life. Still growing their own food. It's hard work till you reap the reward.and never give up if things go wrong. Basketball and boxing supposed to work but I don't think kick boxing is a good idea because that's used for the wrong reason

    • @ADieolp

Just to be clear I'm not saying that the country is lacking youth centres (even though I agree it is). What I'm saying is most youths are not interested in attending youth centres now. They're more interested in doing other stuff. What we need to see is governments/local councils making an effort to make youth clubs more appealing to young people, the real question is what they can actually do to make them more appealing.
I do to an extent agree that we need some form of national service re introduced in the UK, I think something like this would not only reduce crime but also potentially increase healthy living with the exercises involved.

Culture and mindset plays into this. I grew up on a council estate, and i remember being 15-16 and feeling like i needed to carry a weapon to be safe. With hindsight, me and everyone i knew were (without realising it) too into 'gang culture', in the music we listened to, how we dressed, and our outlook on the world. We inherently saw the world as against us, and thought our lives would be a fight to survive. That just isn't true in one of the richest countries in the world.
As the piece shows, crime (and murders, even) are actually falling. But certain people, with narrow world views (like me at 15/16), don't know any better. I couldn't see beyond the estate i lived on.
If you grow up here thinking you are being denied opportunity, you are wrong. People literally risk everything for the opportunities available here. Just do the boring stuff - go to college, get a couple qualifications, get a job, and pretty quickly all this stuff seems kinda ridiculous. There will always be people who look at the world like it's dog eat dog, but this country isn't a failed state (yet). It is not "literally a warzone" out there. That is in your outlook.
How to fix it though? No idea. Start by changing the culture. Reopen youth centres. Offer more free courses to young people. Increase Educational Maintenance Allowance. Prove to people at a younger age that there is stuff for them.

Kids stabbing other kids is probably because they’re bored and fall into gang culture, if we give kids opportunities to do what THEY would like to do and harness their passions then maybe this wouldn’t be an issue all over the world and not just here. I too (in Australia) was around gang culture young but instead of pursuing reputation in the streets (which eventually happened anyway but I’ll explain further) I joined a boxing/kickboxing gym and became one of the most dangerous young fighters in the area. Other people knowing this in my area naturally kept me out a lot of fights where as usually I’d be in them prior to my combat sports journey. Best thing was when I did need to use my skills in the ring out on the street it’d be over pretty quickly 😂

Stop blaming the government, police, lack of opportunities, poor family, no father in the home and racism. No excuse to stab someone. Plenty of people born into families with not much money who don't go around trying to stab people and rise to greatness. These youngsters are trying to take the fast easy money route to success and for that they pay the price. Plenty of opportunities in London if you look around. The greatest inventions we use today were started by rejects with no money. Nothing is easy. Take responsibility for your own actions.

      G'day,
Um, so, once upon a time the CitiZenry was permitted to own Firearms, in the Waybackwhen..., because EVERYBODY understood that Firearms were TOOLS for Hunting, or TOYS, for Target-Practice...; and EVERYBODY knew that Firearms were USELESS for resolving Interpersonal Conflicts - because introducing threats of Deadly Force always escalates Conflict by inviting the THREATENED Party to respond with suddenly Violent Reprisals....
And, then, beginning with Penny-Dreadful "Westerns" & Pulp-Fiction Killer-Thrillers, Magazine & Newspaper Serials, growing through Radio, Movies, & Television..., a bunch of Entrepreneurial Capitalist Drama Queens contrived to make increasingly lucrative incomes by selling the ideas that Violence is EXCITING & Vengence is (Self) Righteous...; and that whomsoever shoots firstest & fastest WINS, & gets to fcuk the pretty Girl & then ride off into the Sunset to get Drunk, and nobody mentioned PTSD or screaming at the Midnight Visitors.
So, progressively, inexorably, the dysfunctional segments of the CitiZenry began to fantasise about producing a Firearm with which to augment their next Temper Tantrum - or Anxiety Attack..., and then they commenced to Act Out their Fantasies.
Therefore, thus, & because..., access to Firearms has been increasingly heavily regulated & restricted ; as the Government attempted to reduce the incidence of Dickheads shootin' themselves, their family, their neighbours, and members of their community, and (here in Oz) that has worked quite well.
However, just(ifiably ?) as the Guns were being taken away from the CitiZenry the Entrepreneurial Capitalist Drama-Queens responded by launching "First Person Shooter/Fighter" Interactive Video Games, with which to augment the increasingly violent Movies & TV Programmes saturating the Suburban Gestalt/Zeitgeist, thus generating ever more income for the "Industry", and leading the otherwise unemployed, unoccupied, bored & unsatisfied to spend ever more hours every day of every week of every month of every year of their lives..., Neuro-Synaptically Programming their Learned Responses to repeatedly ATTACK on the slightest SUSPICION of any PERCIEVED THREAT..., because that's how to win, in their Game/s.
And Knife-Fighting has thus Bin-Glorified, by the Entrepreneurial Capitalist Drama-Queens, with entire "Industries" devoted to pumping out Marketing Jism intended to make every little boy crave a 12-inch bladed Bowie Knife (like the one which my grandmother gave me for Xmas - 54 years ago, when I was 6 years old..., & which I today still possess !).
So, as the disgruntled, bored, anxious, boisterous & otherwise unoccupied (young & dumb) dysfunctional segments of Society commenced to pull knives on each other and attempt to implement their Swordfighting Samurai/Jim Bowie Fantasies on whomsoever "looks at them the wrong way..." - the carraige of Knives has duly Bin-Regulated....
And, so, now..., you seriously think that the best way to improve the situation would be to take the cranky young Wannabes who don't know how to do more than fantasise about Fighting & thus becoming a "Winner", and you want to collect them & TEACH them to fight & injure each other, Systematically & Scientifically..., so that instead of "needing" a Stab hitting some critical Organ or Blood-Vessel to kill whomsoever it is of which they're afraid..., they'll be better trained & able to kill & maim each other with bareknuckle Fisticuffs, Karate, Judo, or Tai-Kwan-Do ; really ?
Perhaps, Munchkin, you should look up terms like
      "Counterproductive Circular Pseudo-Logical Fallacy...",
      Hmmmn ?!?!
The way to reduce Knife Violence, I found, was to teach my Children to respect the sharpness of Knives from the age of 3, when they were given a sharpened Tomahawk - with which to role-model from the other side of the Woodpile, as I split & cut the daily firewood...., neither of my kids has ever cut themselves or anybody else with an Axe..., they both got Folding Lock-Knives at age 6, & 12 plus-inch bladed Sheath-Knives at 10...; and by his 14th birthday my son had paid for his second Chainsaw, with Firewood Sales...
At 17, he killed a Wild Boar with the 15-inch Bladed Kukri which I gave him as a 10 year-old..., and he has never gone hunting again...., Been There/Done That, y'see.
And, when he was 17 he was elected the youngest Deputy Brigade Captain in the NSW Rural Fire Service..., making full Brigade Captain at 24.
But, I digress..., the point is that any Parent who fails to raise their Children to behave safely around Sharp Edged Tools, or fails to teach their Children that ONLY Lunatics & Fcukwits think that it's ever acceptable to threaten another Human with Violence - with or without any Force Multiplier....; has been a Negligent Failure as a Parent.
      Quod Erat Demonstrandum.
My kids are today 32 & 31, and they haven't yet "gone off the Rails".
Therefore my conciet is that I'm qualified to hold a valid opinion on.this matter, and to voice it ; for consideration.
      Just(ifiably ?) sayin'.
      Such is life,
      Have a good one...
      Stay safe.
      ;-p
      Ciao !

But those things are glorified in the media for some reason (Goodfellas, The Godfather, A Bronx Tale). They were living in environments that were so bad they had to go out and commit crimes just to make a living. Same with the Irish people back in the early 1900s. They were treated less than human and housed in the slums and thus crime went rampant even worse than the Italians. These guys would literally go out searching for rival gangs just so they could kill them. Just that this wasn't labelled Italian on Italian or Irish on Irish crime. It was just crime...

The thing is, more deaths are caused through domestic violence and suicide than being a victim of knife crime. It doesn’t mean that this still isn’t an issue ( especially due to the young ages) but why aren’t the media talking about the young men who commit suicide every day, or doing anything to prevent it? I feel sad whenever I hear about the loss of life including knife crime but the figures are down due to initiatives such as mentors, youth workers, young people choosing different routes etc. but we don’t hear about the successes. I know people who don’t want to live in London based on the stories about knife crime when it doesn’t happen all over London.

20,000 more police officers still only brings us up too the levels we had 10 years ago, the major problem is that mental health services are now so poorly funded that the police are the main responders when problems happen. Maybe if spending was increased in the NHS on mental health within our societies these problems would be avoided or at least de-escalated, talking as a mum who's child suffers from chronic pain and has been in contact with the mental health crisis team on several occasions only for them to be given just a print out of volunteer groups phone numbers such as the Samaritans, AA, Mind , etc. Passing this problem on too charities is not the answer!

Ironically most of those kids grow up in religious households. The problems are the gangs and culture. Their own friends/peers drag them down and stop them trying to get an education. "Why iz ya tryin ta be white?" Is the usual accusation against a kid just trying to get an education and get a chance in life.
It needs a massive cultural change for the area. Teaching them to take personal responsibility and not blaming everyone else for their own failings.
