  • This is the longer version of the video I uploaded yesterday.
In 2024 blind people cannot vote in secret, I still can’t believe I’m writing this!! It’s only 15 days until the UK election so if you do want one of these McGonagle readers you have to request them from your local electoral authority. The RNIB have useful resources and template letters that you can send and it’s better to do this at least a week before the election. I will be shouting about this until voting day because this device should be mandatory in all polling stations but it’s not. There has to be adjustments made because blind people like myself cannot feel like our rights are being taken away from us. More videos to come ❤️

Being able to vote with privacy and secrecy is a right everybody should have. I didn't know these existed actually, but I'm glad they do.

This is a super important issue. I’m not blind, but everyone in a democracy deserves a voice. Disability does not devalue a person. Thank you for bringing awareness to this issue.

When I last went to vote they didn’t even have anything in place for blind or visually impaired people it’s like we don’t have a voice and our votes are not needed 😢

That is a really good device for blind people on a separate note. I have started to read your book blind not broken. Have to say it is really good and I’ve only read a few minutes of it as an audiobook. 4:19

The AEC is very public and open about how votes are conducted and collected, I’m sure there’s a page somewhere on their surprisingly large website about how voting works when visually impaired. Because voting here and being registered on the electoral roll is mandatory (as you know) so accessibility is prioritised…. Apparently (just checked their website), it is possible to vote in secret, but details on how that works is limited, as the AEC says that information about how voting works for visually impaired changes and is announced after an election has been called.

    VOTE FOR THE PINEAPPLE PARTY!
In all seriousness it’s a very interesting video, they really should be mandatory at every polling station

You can write a letter to your local electoral authority - the RNIB have some draft letters on their website
