And I think they'll actually phase out the MBP 13 - if they'd retained the same ports as MBP 14 and 16, it would've made for a competitive price segment.

I definitely agree. This is likely going to be the last one, signaled by the lack of a redesign. I expect it to be "replaced" with a 13" Macbook (non-Pro), in a chassis sized similarly to the old 12" Macbooks, possible because the display bezels will be much thinner. Not a true replacement though, just a new product that will be released at or around the same time as another is discontinued. The "Pro" designation on the 13" MBP never really made much sense due to the slow U-series Intel CPU, Intel dedicated graphics and 16 GB maximum RAM. And even though the new Apple Silicon 13" MBP's are much more capable, having the "Pro" designation only for the Pro and Max versions of each generation of SoC makes more sense.

I feel like the M2 Air is now too expensive. It's a 20% price hike and a reasonable config with the M2 Air e.g. 16Gb+ of RAM and 512Gb is touching 2k, at that point the 14" Pro is the better deal. Pretty disappointing.

And this is what Apple wants. The same thing occur with the iPad Air and its 64gb. If you upgrade to 256gb, you're not far away from the iPad Pro price. They always will make you buy the Pro models if the base configuration of the entry level model is not enough for you..!

I bought the M1 MBP when it first came out for 3 simple reasons
    1) Its Touch Bar bcs it seemed cool to me at the time, and even though I can live without it, it still provides some form of convenience for me (eg scrolling through video time frames).
    2) The presence of a fan for longevity, since the fan-less design of the M1 MBA wasn't tested in the real world at that point in time.
    3) Its bigger battery and slightly bigger trackpad.
However, if I were to buy a new MacBook now, it's gonna be either the M1 MBA or the 14 inch MBP. I believe that the base model of the M2 MBA still only comes with 256 GB of storage and 8 GB of memory, and If I were to purchase the higher end M2 MBA model, it might be better to look at the base model M1 Pro MBP 14.

    • @sjn_
      @sjn_ 2 роки тому +1

True. Same story here, I have the same MBP as you do and I bought it over MBA for the exact fanless design concern.
But now, this M2 MBP makes no sense, specially when the M1 Pro/Max models exist. Has exactly the same design with just a new processor lol
The M1 MBP was also a disappointing device tbh, but the Pro/Max models weren't around and it seemed better than the Air at least. I don't know why Apple is treating the base model Pro like this. They should be prioritizing it more.
I really wish they would make base models have 16GB RAM but well, it's Apple, gotta do the tricky business for $$$.
The fact that Windows laptops with 16GB RAM come under the money that an 8GB MacBooks take is really disappointing, I don't know why Apple treats their RAM like a freaking diamond...

Let me tell you the best in class use case. Back in 2015 I bought an Intel Macbook pro 15 inch on an in store deal for approx 1950. Back then, I needed portability due to the way the tech world was with office work and client visits. in 2020 we had the pandemic, and the world changed where we could work remotely, in fact it was encouraged. All of a sudden I could comfortably get by with having desktop. I then sold my 2015 Intel Macbook pro for 500 to a DJ. I bought an M1 Mac Mini for 550 and a used like new 32 inch AOC 4k monitor for 350. I had vouchers from work on Amazon as a bonus and used that to buy a Keychron keyboard, a Logitech MX Master and a Dprofy soundbar.
Honestly, I have no intention to change for a good while no matter how many events Apple has. That is how you get the optimum out of Apple without spending too much. I am a Product Designer, and I am pro already Apple - just ask my salary. Please don't spend money you don't have to.

You are getting the £100 ($100) wrong as the Air at $100 cheaper only has the 8-core GPU. Go to the 10-core GPU versions and the MB Air and MB Pro are the exact same price. So you should add a 25% better GPU performance in the MB Pro along with active cooling (if you live in hot climate), 10% better battery life, TouchBar (love) and 67-watt charger included (so save $60). I feel that the MB Pro 13 is a very persuasive option and certainly the one I would pick. There are reasons to buy the AIr but they are not really that important to me compared to the advantages of the Pro.
I think Apple did their research and know the TouchBar has a good fanbase and that it will continue to sell well before it gets the facelift late next year, where I expect the MB Air M2 to drop in price and the MB Pro 13 to be updated to OLED and fit in between the MB Pro 14/16 and MB Air.

The current 13" is only a hedge against supply chain problems. If Apple can't make enough new Airs and wait times go to months out some people who want an M2 might just pay the extra hundred bucks and settle on the 13 Pro. Apple should have no problems producing the 13 Pro as they design is the same so the tooling and manufacturing should be much easier. If supply improves and Apple can ramp the Air enough then yeah I think the Pro just goes away in 6-8 months or gets it's own redesign pushed out then. Apple just didn't want to switch manufacturing on both models and then not have any product to sell.

I liked the old chassis of the M1 MBA much, much better so for me i'll stick with that machine with 16gb ram that I already have. For me neither of these new machines makes any sense over the M1 MBA. The M1 MBA has the wedge shape which is more ergonomic, no ugly notch, cheaper, and more than enough performance for most laptop things.
I believe you said it yourself in the video that if you're maxing this thing out 24/7, you should be looking at a 14 or 16 inch pro. I think that is true and the M1 hasn't struggled with anything i've thrown at it (that said, I still do any heavier work on my workstation desktop). I just think for the majority of people, they will be more than happy saving some money and getting the M1 MBA.

Love your vids. What might be helpful when talking about colors is comparing to existing products with the same colors (if it exists). So although the "gold" has gone through many shades over the years, something like "Starlight" and "Midnight" already have very recent equivalents, iPad Air and Watch Series 7 respectfully. And since this MacBook Air won't be available to order until next month, and most likely will have a long lead time before getting into stores, it'd be great if you can speak to the colors with respect to the existing products. Are they the exact same, a bit darker, etc. Yes, the form factor of a watch is significantly different than that of a laptop, but we can visit a store today and see the Midnight color and extrapolate if that's a color we'd like since it's in-between a blue and a black.

M1/M2 13 inch MBPs are for people who hate the notches but still want the processing power of the M1/M2 chips/gpus ; i'm saying this as someone who owns a 2017 13 inch MBP (no touch bar). Love the chassis of the 13 inch MBP and have considered upgrading to the M1/M2 13 inch MBPs (still has better speakers than the MBA airs / no notch / better chassis design although i could do without the touch bar/prefer physical function keys, and a fan to cool during performance-intensive tasks ) . The M2 MBA is tempting tho with the updated design/midnight color but i just really hate the notch design (i'm fine with the 720p camera/don't need 1080p esp with Apple introducing using the iPhone now as a webcam now). It's a smaller market but arguably smart marketing on Apple's part because they probably have a bunch of MBP 13 inch chassis lying around (it's like how Dell still offers the previous generation chips on their website for cheaper, same chassis but weaker processor for their Dell XPS line) but for now i won't upgrade since for my purposes my old 2017 MBP is still great...

If you have the budget and want the latest and greatest, go for the M2 MBA. But, for your usage, you probably would need a base model M1 MBA (USD 999) or M1 MBA with 16GB of RAM (USD 1199) to be safe and it will cost you the same as the M2 MBA base model, but with double the RAM.
The M1 is an overkill chip, I got a Base Model M1 MBA last year and I use it for the same things as you, except that I code a little bit, and it works seamlessly, is completely silent, never struggle with my workload and the battery life endures 2 or 3 days on one charge... it is amazing. Apple‘s upselling at its finest. The Air is too expensive if you want more storage/ram/more cores. Then you are pushed to buy the Pro 13 inch. But Pro 13 inch is worse except touchbar/fan and has a 6 years old chassis. So you are making „logically“ decision steps to buy the 14 inch M1 Pro Macbook Pro.
I learned all that pricing and microeconomical decisions at my university.
My solution alternative would be just buy the base M2 Macbook Air and an external SSD. I would not buy the M1 Air because it is too expensive for a two years old device. Only dropping 100€ in my country is not enough to justify the buy.

What id wish is they sold it without the Camera, id pay more just to get rid of that shit. I think it’s a massive fail to the point I don’t even want one unless a used one pops up at a really good price. Otherwise I’m gonna wait and see what next year bring.
