  • There have been a number of characters in the locker room over the past 100 years of Bruins hockey. But few stand out more than Derek Sanderson. His hard-nosed playing style and charismatic personality have left an undeniable mark on Bruins fans who watched his career in Boston.

Derek was 1 of the best faceoff men in the league. He shadowed all the big scorers like Beliveau, Hull and Howe. I loved watching him and Eddie Westphal on the penalty kill.

As a young teenager, Derek was my idol. I followed his career with enthusiasm, and wanted to be just like him. In one aspect, I succeeded...drinking. What I am most happy about is that we both got sober!
    What a gift! Mark 5/8/1994

I grew up in Brooklyn N.Y. a Ranger fan with my dad being a Ranger fanatic !!! From the mid 60's through the 70's the best games for the both of us, be it on the radio or TV was Bruin games. We LOVED hating the Bruins when they play the Rangers but always watched and cheered them on when playing any other hockey team...yes we were Bruin fans because they deserved our respect.

Isn't that something. I'm from Boston and am a die hard Bruins fan, but I loved the Rangers too. My favorite Rangers were Brad Park, Vic Hadfield, Jean Ratelle, etc. We sure had some good battles. The Stanley Cup playoffs in 1972 was fantastic. Boston and New York were pretty evenly matched, except we had Bobby!

My dad took me to a Bruins game at the Boston Garden when I was a little kid. Derek was my favorite player. We always watched the Bruins on TV. There happened to be a meet and greet after the game with Sanderson, Johnny Buycik, and another player I can't remember. I got in Sanderson's line with the poster my Dad bought me that night. He signed it and said Hey kid how'd you like the game tonight? I was starstruck and just said, good. That poster was on my bedroom wall for years. This was probably 71 or 72...I was a second grader so 7 years old.

My heroes as a kid, years later I played in golf ProAms with him and Bobby Orr and other Boston greats. Meaning the same tournament-not personally. Longest drive hole I thought I was a contender one year-we get down to my ball and see the marker about 15yds ahead. Derek had had one or both knees replaced recently (like weeks), is probably 20 years older than me, and won it. Humbling but awesome.

i learned how to take face offs from watching derek. he would still be winning all his face offs today cuz he mostly played the other guy's stick, rather than the puck. the way players take them has changed quite a bit over the years ( now holding the stick with both gloves over the stick instead of one over and one under, as derek did ) but today's players still play the puck. no matter what your opponent does, even if he's faster, you can take the puck away by playing his stick. i was small, but i'd win 80 % of my face offs and get 5 points per year by drawing it right back to my wing at the top of the circle. bing bang.

your dad would be wrong. orr's career ended early because he took a beating from extra attention from opponents. he got into plenty of scraps and fights sticking up for himself. orr drew a lot of penalties because guys couldn't keep up with him or contain him, but that is different than favoritism.

@@km11wpg Well done, Derek. Orr was pretty good but don't you think Bourque was in the same category ? Bourque spent less time in the penalty box and didn't fight as much as Orr. And yet his team was more or less as successful as Orr's Bruins in the regular season only. Of course the Edmonton Oilers had something to say about the Bourque Bruins when they met them in the 1988 and 1990 Cup Finals.

@@hwy2065 Good for Bobby Orr and Derek Sanderson ! I'm helping people understand that Wayne Gretzky was BETTER than Bobby Orr. But so many people refuse to acknowledge the truth because the truth hurts doesn't it ? Ask anyone who was at Boston Garden in the 1988 and 1990 Cup Final. I wouldn't be surprised that many people WISHED for that power failure in the 1988 Cup Final simply because the Oilers were the greatest ! Correct me if I'm wrong. I don't need to know everyone to know that inside so many people there is this evil rush to hurt/hate the enemy.

maybe overpaid, but not overrated. he got paid because wherever he went on the road was a sell out. he was the biggest draw in the NHL, outside of orr. he killed penalties and scored shorties. he was a second line scorer playing on a third line. he was so good defensively that it caused other teams to be conservative offensively. every team in the league would have LOVED to have him. your post is kinda loopy.
