From the 1992 album Apollo 18 is the song "The statue Got Me High" by They Might Be Giants. I DO NOT OWN THIS VIDEO NOR AM I UPLOADING THIS FOR A PROFIT. Like the song? Buy it here:

I love how Linnell rocks that accordion
Born too late to explore the world, born too soon to explore the galaxy, born just in time to listen to TMBG
hell yeah!
We can still explore the ocean tho, there’s a lot left to discover
Lucky, I never was but I’m glad I have good parents who were, to tell me to listen to these guys
Damn that's poetic
I hesitate to tell you this but when they explore the galaxy, they can still listen to TMBG (right? or does something happen..??)
Apollo18 is such a good album...quirky,weird, charming...and most of all ......original. And yes this album is dear to my heart too.
One thing I love about TMBG is how horrific and dark their lyrics often are, behind the cheerful music.
This song in particular is like a short horror story, with a vibe not unlike "The king in yellow" by RW Chambers.
Yes me too. “Spiraling Shape” is a great example of this in particular, Lovecraftian.
This song is packed with greatness. Even though it is only a 3 minute song it seems like 5 minutes have gone by with so many great sections, from the different drum transitions, to the intermittent saxophones, to the interesting lyrics, to the etc.
+NFLed TMBG are the kings of brainy, alt-pop, taught pop music. love these arrangements.
Not to lay it on thick... but...
This, coupled with a few other TMBG songs are the soundtrack of my childhood. I can't listen to these gems without knowing, if for the briefest of moments, the full beauty of both the innocence of youth and the crushing ache that comes the first time one feels the full fledged love of music. My first real passion was realized exploring this album... and as such, it holds a very special place in my heart. I hope the two Johns know what their music means to some of us... They are a very real part of my life, a part of ME.
I wish I could give them a hug....
i'll give you a hug~
Everything you just said, is MY favorite thing to do, every day!!

You don't have to be young to experience transcendence from music. You can be old and jaded and hear music that makes everything new and in that instant you envision possibilities that didn't exist only a moment before. The two Johns have given me that "crushing ache" you mention, too, as well as an effervescent joy. As Nietzsche said: Without music, life would be a mistake.
The first time I heard TMBG was their children's album _No!_ when I was very young. I particularly remember singing along to many of the songs, but I don't really remember the first time because we've had that album as long as I can remember. My dad would also play a compilation disc from them, but usually exclusively the first two songs, Don't Let's Start and Ana Ng (he's told me he thinks the rest "pales in comparison"; I think I somewhat agree.) Awhile later, I received _Here Comes Science_ for Christmas, when I was still a chid. I was totally into that as well.
Years later, I have rediscovered them and at this point I've listened to their first handful of albums so much that I wish I could un-hear them just so I could experience them for the first time all over again.
I too feel a deep appreciation for this band. Right now I'm going through high school and they're really helping me keep my sanity, even if the music distracts me from work a bit. Often I can't fathom how I even went so long without knowing of anything besides their two aforementioned children's CDs.
Well said. To see stream of consciousness made into music like this is just fantastic. I bet today those guys can't believe they actually wrote all that great stuff.
I drive past this location every day! It's the Sepulveda Dam in Los Angeles. It's actually open as a park, so anyone's allowed to go in there.
funny, I have the dvd this is from (Direct From Brooklyn, you can see the end of the title screen at the beginning of the video) and in the commentary the Johns discuss during one of the songs (possibly this one, can't remember for sure) that most of the locations they filmed early videos were either unbearably hot or unbelievably cold
i have added one thing to my bucket list, which is to learn to play this song then busk at that park
Strong Bad The park isn’t exactly conducive to busking, for the most part. It’s a fairly large recreation area with five or six distinct parks, none of them being particularly urban. Most of it is just a glorified floodplain in reality, during heavy rains you can’t even drive through the area.
i should have know it was in LA
it looked like GTA 5 witch the city witch it takes place is based off of
Is there a large tree there? I have to relieve myself. Urgent, please reply. I'll check back here in a minute or two. Definitely not three minutes though.
when I was 16 my friends and I would hang out at that Dam. just skateboarding, riding bikes, using Street Signs as sleds to slide down those concrete hills. miss those days. once in a while we'd go there and just hang and enjoy the view of the freeway and sunset.
Thekijuju One question, how the hell do you get a street sign off its post? I'm not gonna do that in real life, I'm just curious
lol sorry, let me be more clearer. it wasnt a street sign. it was those road block signs that stood on its own you know? we'd use those as sleds cause they were bigger and thick.
Thekijuju I gotcha
So many times I can recall stealing my big brother's discman so I could listen to Apollo 18 as I skated to my friend's house when I was 12... This kind of music is worth a beating from your big bro and it holds true as some of my most cherished childhood memories. The sun on your back, flying down Murray Blvd on your skateboard and They Might Be Giants guiding your smile.... perfect.
when I listen to this I can SMELL the 90s
It was so much better than it smells from here. I really miss the 90's
some call it nerd rock, I like to think of it as space rock
But all we know is, he's called the stig.
Jim Tilt I wanna see the sci fi world where TMBG got really big.
@@trenchmccoat273 that would be this world
My favorite genre, Meteoroid!!
My dad always had dial-a-song playing in the car. tmbg are the soundtrack of my childhood
Good Dad.
You mean the dial-a-song CD?
Mine too!! We had the dial a song CD collection and files from the dial-a-song TMBG website
Skateboarding astronauts playing saxophones... This is the best music video in the history of our galaxy!
A They Might Be Giants song which was written as a paean to 2001: A Space Odyssey which entails a music video where the events take at the Sepulveda Dam, or the location which the cast of Buckaroo Banzai had their sublimely choreographed and synchronized denouement...
There might not even be heavens more divine than this. Holy moly.
You're my new favorite person.
Banzai inst.
+
im pretty sure the lyrics are about the lovecraft story Hypnos
@it's rick.hentai on Instagram they might be big, big, big, big lies.........
If a statue gets you high, it might not be the statue! May be a nearby gas leak. Remember Maude Flanders' Praiseland!
Pretty sure this is the best music video ever made
I have no desire to ponder what the lyrics mean. And thus I am able to retain my sanity.
pfft! Sanity!
Heehee
InvisiblerApple
Sanity is for the weak.
That's too bad, because the statue got me high and all you see is a statue standing where the statue got me high.
sadliy that proof that you have no desire to find meaning means your already crazy
This is the most A E S T H E T I C band in history.
Mason Wood I believe you mean *_A E S T H E T I C_*
I believe you mean "inexplicably original"
It helps that they were active in the eighties and nineties
And they've been active ever since-- still going.
*A E S T H E T I C C*
how can anyone NOT like this? greatest band ever.
The statue got me high
The statue got me high
The monument of granite sent a beam into my eye
The statue made me die
The statue made me die
It took my hand it killed me and it turned me to the sky
The stone it called to me
(And now I see the things the stone has shown to me)
A rock that spoke a word
(An animated mineral it can be heard)
And though I once preferred a human being's company
They pale before the monolith that towers over me
The statue got me high
The statue got me high
The truth is where the sculptor's chisel chipped away the lie
The statue made me fry
The statue made me fry
My coat contained a furnace where there used to be a guy
The stone it called to me
(And now I see the things the stone has shown to me)
A rock that spoke a word
(An animated mineral it can be heard)
And as the screaming fire engine siren filled the air
The evidence had vanished from my charred and smoking chair
And what they found was just a statue
Standing where the statue got me high
And what they found was just a statue
Standing where the statue got me high
And now it is your turn
(Your turn to hear the stone and then your turn to burn)
The stone it calls to you
(You can't refuse to do the things it tells you to)
And as the screaming fire engine siren fills the air
The evidence will vanish from your charred and smoking chair
And what they found was just a statue
Standing where the statue got me high
And what they'll find is just a statue
Standing where the statue got you high
This song makes me think of that episode of the Simpsons where a theme park is built in honor of Maude Flanders and there is a statue of her in the park and people kneel down in front of it and it makes them high.
If you ever question TMBG's style, the secret service takes you away
Can we just appreciate their faces in this video, especially John Linnel's face at 0:46? Priceless
I just realized that the tea cup in the beginning totally has dry ice in it.
Having fun listening to my hubby and my favorite band after 38 yrs !!!!! Love TMBG always !
Happy 26th birthday, Apollo 18! Linnell 2020!
killer snare drum. great hit
Love this video it brings back wonderful memories of 1992 the1990's was so a Better time
.
LIVE FROM MOON
Or Sepulveda Dam L.A.
First TMBG song I ever heard. My dad had a single cd with 3-4 songs on it. Was wonderful.
Love Linnell's accordion
I love their vids from the earlier days... they were pretty creative.
I think this song was the reason I never did drugs.
Just saw them in Baltimore and this song was part of their set. They are as fabulous as ever.
"Lucky, I never was but I’m glad I have good parents who were, to tell me to listen to these guys"Lucky indeed. TMBG should be explored by everyone in general, there's a lot to be found.
This song got me buzzed
I play this whenever I need reminding that my mind and I are not the same thing.
I actually saw Laurie Anderson at the Overture Center in Madison, WI. Ranks in the top 10 shows of my life.
FINALLY got to see these guys play last month! It was freakin' epic!!!! Only took 20 years :)
this is an absolute favorite song right behind mammal and the guitar!!
I saw this as a kid from rural Texas on an MTV Special, in which Weird Al 'took over the station', called "AL TV". At the time I didn't quite have the vocabulary to explain it, but it said something affirming to me about the existence -- however small and embryonic -- of a "DIY Geek Punk" aesthetic existing somewhere out there.
Haven't seen this video for over 20 years: still brilliant. (so it's the song)
Apollo 18 is a great record.
Linnell... the man who made the accordion cool for the millennia
I feel like this music video could be the basis of a strange new religion.
+McBandit Hope Like Unitology! Go figure... ~ w~
McBandit Hope No, that would be the Birdhouse in your Soul music video
You could make a religion out of this.
@@elliebean368 No, don't
Awesome music aside... These guys really know how to make great videos
I relive 1992 every fucking day of my life. It's such a monolith.
I think I found my favourite tmbg video..
i'm glad i lived in the same decade as one of the best bands to date.
they have the best music videos.
That coffee cup.
This video actually has better video quality than the one on the official TMBG channel
This reminds me of being in my 20s again. I used to drive around blasting this in my VW Bug. Simple days.
i’m in my 20s now and i drive around blasting this from my beetle too :)
You’re honestly a lifesaver, putting in the little intro segments
What, how. who? why would ANYBODY give this song a thumbs down?
Brilliant tune and one that cemented my life-long love for this fantastic band!
This song drives me crazy, but it's a short drive. Thank you TMBG!
I saw this on Weird Al TV in the 90's!!!
AKIRA TV Did you now? Well, he did say this was one of his favorite bands
I love John's hair in this video!
Treyworld Which one?!
I love linnel's hair
I want to be locked in a room with TMBG songs / videos playing 24/7. I would then feel true happiness. BTW- you're right. The hair is amazing.
For some reason i can see Linnell as a physics teacher XD
Don't Let's Start is what got me hooked way back in the 80s
I really hope TMBG songs are preserved for the aliens to find when the human race goes extinct
It's about the end of the world. The statue is the mountain at the north pole where the event begins. The song describes people being burned, sucked up into the sky, possessed, and petrified ("and what they found was just a statue standing where the statue got me high"). This is one of my favorite songs about this topic.
LOL 1:30-1:34 Tough to film guys in reflective space-suit masks without seeing the camera!
Thanks for posting - I've never seen this vid before - a real treat!
Whoa...someone else with grammatical skill on UA-cam. I am amazed and awed.
I'm old enough to have dialed-a-song.
Linnell says that it's kind of accidentally about Don Juan, but that he originally just liked the idea of a statue blowing someone's mind. There's a big quote from him on the wiki page.
This is sooo... ballin'
good work guy
Three cheers for the Official Music Ambassadors for International Space Year!
The last time I saw this was one time, in 1992. WOW! I'm watching it again.
Why you so good TMBG?!
I love that guitar...reminds me of Bo Diddely's square one crossed with the normal ones everyone else has
@Jessability If only I was 16 when these guys were popular. Thankfully I found out about them despite my age and generation.
The musicians I've listened to today:
Devo
Talking Heads
Laurie Anderson
John Green (sing-a-ma-jig music)
Hank Green
Jonathan Coulton
TMBG
this song is just about art blowing your mind! and now it is YOUR turn!!!
Love you guys!
Well.
A monument of granite.
"The stone it calls to me
A rock that spoke a word"
I've been listening to this song for 15+ years and I think the unconscious subtext is -
A rock getting you high, band coming out of the 80s.
Basically, a song about crack rocks from an indie college band.
I don't think that's what they intended but that's definitely what I've been thinking this song's about.
watching this while high sounds great
long live they might be giants
This song is about enlightenment and higher understanding
2:10 the stars! THE STARS MAKE A GUITAR. :3
a lovely list!
I wish college radio sounded like this today. :)
Listen to the lyrics... at the end of 2001, Dave touched the monolith, it took him through time and space and he ended up as a evolved "Star Child." Like at the beginning when an ape touched it and then began to use tools.
i like this song.
25 years of goodness - They look soooo young.
I want Linnell's hair so bad, I think I'm going to go to the barber, show some pictures of him, and say "I want his hair."
How not to play hitman, guys remember? How the dude recording it loved useing TMBG songs over it, god so many memories, I loved TMBG back in my childhood days and watching my favorite game with my favorite music, god I had some laughs at those videos, nostalgia
Malcolm in the middle and How not to play, those 2 really inspired me to listen to TMBG, I already miss my childhood
@Videosarehere This video was directed by Adam Bernstein who directed "New Years Pete".
it reminds me of 2001 a space odyssey
Rocket fuel can't melt steel statues.
+RobutOverlord it can now
wHY
@sutjas16
Ditto. The statue is an impressive monolith ("...paled before the monolith that towered over me") that has the ability to control people ("you can't refuse to do the things it tells you to"), project incomprehensible visions ("got me high"), and kill them ("made me die"), just like the African monolith. The video makes it clear that it takes place on the Moon, near Clavius.
I'm still curious why bieber ends up in comments about many videos? This one is just some great stuff....not much good stuff like this anymore. And they put on an outstanding live show, btw.
Must admit, I love shots like the one at 1:57. Just so cool.
Wow!....what can I say?
What a freekin' cool video.
An astronaut playing the snare drum and Sax. An acid trip? No. Just a TMBG music video.
Lovely!
Yes and yes.
Those bubble jets they're behind are known as an ozone generator in which oxygen is energize by electricity. The reaction separates the atoms into O2 gasses or Ozone. Then the Ozone is filtered through the raw rater coming into a sanitation tank which kills and sterilizes the water.
......So yeah, that's what they were standing behind. Little fun fact. :)
Ozone is O3, O2 is breathable oxygen.
uh yeah....missed the wrong button ya know?
Timesmanify For over a month?
I do other things than watch youtube videos.
Timesmanify I didn't say that's all you did, a little fact checking would've prevented this. But hey, I'm not scorning you. Mistakes were made, it happens no worries.
There are 25 very sad people in this world.
they are good looking guys!
