I play violin AND CELLO. I just got a NS cello design 5 string and the tone is drop dead fantastic. Below low C, I can go down to a low F. I learned to play by ear to many genres. By blending with JBL speakers and U-tube music, the sound opens up. I also have a nice 4/4 chamber cello with surprising no wolf tone. Love your videos.
Congratulations for buying this new cello! I think that the older the cello, the better it sounds. And it really does sound better than your friend's cello. And btw the first time I saw a video from you I thought you had 1.5 million subs or smth like that but I was disappointed to see that you only have 20K subs. Subscribe to her guys she deserves much more than that!!
I am renting this cello, it's a 6 month adventure and we'll see how it goes from there. And thanks for the compliment! I like my videos, but the algorithm apparently disagrees. 😋
00:39 There are or were possibilities once to stay in a bookstore overnight and read everything you liked. I would like the opportunity to stay at a violin maker's shop for a day or so and PLAY everything I liked! I recently went bow-shopping and I could not help wondering how this or that violin or cello sounded that could be seen in the shop!
👏Congratulations on your wonderful journey with the cello. 👍 I would've liked to learn to play the cello if it wasn’t for the fact that it plays in the bass clef. As you know, I only play instruments that play in the treble clef - to include brass, woodwind, and string. 😊 🎼 BTW: What happened with your hurdy gurdy? 🤔 Did you think we forgot? 🤨Then you can really have a jam session! 😃
Well, learning to read the bass clef was quite easy, at least it was for me. The first lesson book just starts with the 4 notes of the 4 open strings and gradually builds up from there.
@@MarijkeViolin Great news! 🙂BTW: Piano, organ and harp players, with the exception of playing lead sheets, need to learn both the bass and treble clefs, and read and play them at the same time no less. 😉Now, onto another pressing matter - what about your hurdy gurdy? Don't tell me you gave up on that? 😟
BTW Warning: I stuck those tapes on my fingerboard as well and the would not stick all the way round so I let the ends stand up. Then my A-string sounded weird, echoed really nastily. I took the cello to the luthier thinking something might be very wrong and it turned out, those tapes were interacting with the string causing these echoes. So, make sure the ends don't stand up/ out. Also, I rented a cello of which I thought at first "how ugly!" Then I played it for some months and ended up buying it because I really loved the sound. Maybe that made me like its exterior more and more as time progressed. At least, I can say that my cello looks relly unique. It is not 80 years old, but used, maybe 20 to 40? I also bought a stand and now the cello is always out in the living room and the violins sit there on a couch at the moment, ready for the next practice session. I find that much easier than always getting the case and setting everything up. Bows are relaxed, of course, but shoulder rests stay attached to the violins.
@@fair. Even more lovely, is the different colours of varnish, and flaming on the ribs and back, on old cellos.Other exciting details are a rosewood fingerboard or an ebony one? Pegs? Ebony or Boxwood? Original or new in 1929? My Georgian cello has defintley had new ebony pegs fitted, and is a very naughty boy!!
Your new rental looks and sounds great! I’m glad you get to play on a better instrument - it makes everything much more fun. When are you gonna try playing bass? 😂 Now that you’ve done violin, viola, and cello
Is that a full size cello? I have a 3/4 which was advised to my by the luthier after trying a 7/8 because I apparently have small hands. I believe we could have roughly the same hand size? Just wondering, I am completely happy with my 3/4.
Hoe lager hoe beter, inderdaad. 😅
Seriously though, remember one thing: A poorly made cello will almost always have a very poor response across C and G strings, i.e. it will sound muted, harsh and hard to draw the sound out of. I had a "no name (antiqued)" cello, which was made in China to look like it was 300 years old with scratches and rubbed out varnish. It was a real struggle to play on the two bottom strings, and I later sold it at half the price. Your cello reminded me of all the pain I went through. No amount of string changes or bridge adjustments could improve that piece of Chinese-made piece of sht.
Very true. Still, the cheap cello sounded quite okay after being altered by a luthier and it wasn't a pain to play. I do notice a big difference in clarity with the new cello, the sound is much better. 🙂
Girl! get that bow lower! You keep playing far too close to the fingerboard, so yo will naturally get a weak sound and scratchy is not playing quieter. Move your bow exactly between the bridge and and fingerboard, so bow a bit lower, and your sound will improve alot. Now move the bow faster, but not heavier in whack! that will eliminate your scrapey sound. Think "swan" for a ovely sound now think "Tiger" for a more stirdent, yet controlled sound - swan, tiger swan tiger and it's all done on the bow , not the fingers. Yur bow makes the sound ultimately.

Got to love the scratches and bumps on an old Instrument. Each dent and scuff has a story.
True, it looks cool! I was a bit afraid it would be very fragile, but I guess it's fine. 🙂

Wow it sounds wonderful and you play wonderfully! I've always been fascinated at how musical instruments last so long without wearing out.
Indeed, it's a fine craft! I like the sound too, although getting used to it will take some time. 🙂

It's a full size, yes. I did ask my teacher if I can handle full size, she said I did. But I can imagine 7/8 or 3/4 require a lot less strain!
