343 staff constantly leaving is because they're all on contracts. 343 has constantly been hiring contractors instead of permanent staff, which means that the majority of the dev team's time is taken up trying to learn the engine and continue the work of the employee before them. However, now that Bonnie is gone, hopefully that will change and they'll finally have a consistent, stable development team.

He saved halo, Bonnie ross is gone now. If weren't for his and mutas video. The whole 343 thing would have died down and they wouldn't have any changes going on.
Would probably take a few years to get off the ground, but Charlie has enough good will built up at this point to make it happen if he wanted to. Given how mediocre this industry is now I have to imagine there's people out there waiting for someone with even a modicum of ambition to lead the way. A lot of these companies only continue on at this point because of their previously successful IPs and brand name recognition.

We've heard "games killers" for things like destiny, call of duty, rainbow six siege, etc for years now. Halo doesn't have that, and that isn't including how there aren't really any Arena FPS games that can beat Halo even in the current state (sorry splitgate, you would never have beaten it)

I had a bad feeling about 343s capabilities as a game studio as soon as I finished 4 the Christmas it came out, it wasnt that it was over all a bad game, but the fact that Halo would never be the same ever again, when the very studio that created and perfected the series prior no longer wanted to have a hand in their own creation is when the plug shouldve been pulled.

I love Halo, I probably always will love Halo. But Charlie's points are right. 343i is struggling to maintain their one property. They made a live-service game but forgot the live-service part, and the absurd rate of management turnover is easily felt in the quality of Infinite right now

I think Mutahar said something important in his video covering the topic: just because you really love a game developer and their games, doesn't mean you should never criticize them. If they screw up and people call them out on it, it only serves in that they will improve whatever they make in the future.

Fallen Order was alright. Fan base is still there. But even the most hardcore Halo fans that have every novel, and everything are struggling to find anything good. Simply put 343 doesn't even have the identity of Halo down. They focused soo much on competition and function they took out many guns for a few. They added anti fun mechanics such as a progression system that requires specific actions for achievements. And make you buy color for one specific armor. No other game I can think of has color sold and locked when 5 other games of the same series prior had all color free. Every Halo story from 343 is kill, change, or resurrect Cortana. They can't even commit to any story moment because they have to offscreen everything. Then the only good story they had was the outsourced story...and somehow make them all James Bond villains, where their incompetence is showing. 1 or 2 biome campaign, 6 multiplayer maps, they didn't even have slayer at launch...the most popular game mode. And it took them months to fix that and big team battle. And considering there's less weapons in Halo Infinite than most other Halo games you think they would've had the guns balanced, also competitive gaming was their focus. Nope there was even a OFFICIAL competition where teams had to agree not to pick up the mangler...Because somehow 343 couldn't even REMOVE it from game.
Honestly, Sega had the same thing happen and it's arguably worse since they destroyed Sonic reputation so bad that people somehow believed that Sonic was never good and still wonder how the hell did that happen

How about Danger Close? They made two games before EA rebranded them: Command and conquer 4 and Medal of Honour Warfighter, both of which completely flopped and destroyed those whole franchises to this day.
THANK YOU for shining a light on Halo Wars and Halo Wars 2, such amazing games that never got the support they needed and deserved. HW2 is completely unsupported by 343 and creative assembly these days... its still a massively fun RTS, my boyfriend and I play it frequently but its only a matter of time before the servers for Halo Wars 2 are shut down :(
They put it out not that long ago I’m sure they’ll keep it running for a long time creative assembly is good for stuff like that you can still play games they’ve made 20+ years ago in multiplayer

The only thing I liked about Halo Wars was kinda experiencing the battles and world and vehicles from like a commanders birds eye view or whatever. But that got old fast I also lost interest in the Halo games entirely because there's better games out there these days. I played Halo Infinite I think it was the online one with the b pass anyway, and got the Halo collection but it feels like nothing has changed or has been made better in a way that is exciting anymore. Don't expect that from the collection but the newer ones to me are just a better styled version of what Halo has already been for ages now.
as a halo fanboy of over a decade, and avid player of infinite, even in its stark decline, I have to agree with Charlie. The gameplay is so much fun, but their “support” for the game is just bad, downright trash. Took them forever to fix Halo 5, now infinite is gonna suffer the same fat. It truly is a sad case
It's getting harder and harder to continue that game, the events are a bandaid but I don't know why on Earth they are structured so lazily. The season pass, microtransactions, and customization are such a joke though.
I was a huge halo fan. Infinite could be good but it won’t be. It’s done for and they’ll do stuff maybe 2 years from now that’ll be what we should’ve had at launch but the community will probably never come together the way it was ever again. Halo is done for this was their shot and they blew it big time
The problem is they have so drastically shifted from the “party game” ideas that bungee had developed. Doing so they have stripped the entire social aspect of halo. The best times I’ve had playing halo were custom games and seeing the goofy playlists and maps people had created. You had the options to search for lobbies where people were talking. You could view other players screenshots and custom maps and modes they had made just by clicking on their name. Now it’s all about ‘we have to be a competitive esports game’ and can’t even seem to get that right. Instead of copying and pasting what had come before like CoD they just update graphics and remove previous content past halo games had and call it a new game. it’s so disappointing.
Damn now I miss that custom game mode where you was in a warthog falling down an endless slope while infected players tried to kill you with gravity hammers....good times...

diehard Halo fan here, you're 100% right and twitter should always be ignored. i made so many excuses for Infinite at the beginning bc i was so excited they seemed to be returning to Halo's roots with the music and design choices, plus they even brought back Joe Staten, but not even he could single-handedly finish this game for them. i continued supporting them even after the shock of no campaign co-op on launch; i can't do it anymore. how many times can a fan forgive a company that clearly has no love or respect for the game they're making?
The biggest problem is the management and leadership. They are in charge of what happens, while the developers are spending a lot of effort on making the game. If the leadership was a lot better and if Joe Staten was the leader of 343 from the start, then this would be an entirely different story
I’ve been a halo fan since I got my first gen Xbox in 2011 and played CE so it’s been a major part of my childhood, but really this was the last straw for me:P I will not be buying any more halo games or merchandise as long as the franchise is under 343 industries :(
Charlie is far more eloquent and/or sensible than most people tend to assume about him. They way his words can be twisted proves that some people are willing to go the extra mile to tear someone down completely.

The man who replaced Bonnie was the one who steered MCC to where it is today, and with Joe as the head of creative, I hope it's in good hands. I'm glad Chris Lee is gone too, I think Mint Blitz said part of the problem with Infinite was on him.
I wont lie, I hope the best for bonnie and her family. mint blitz confirmed that Chris lee is still apart of Microsoft( he was the head of fps games) he hit the nail on the head with the video and information that no big youtuber including Charlie has covered its sad to see the jump on the 343 bandwagon without the information.
In the long run while it remains to be seen how this change will affect things I don't see Halo getting much worse than it already is. However it will without a doubt take a long time for anything from all this to trickle down to the end products. I wouldn't expect to see even the first most minor of changes from this until at least the second half of next year, roughly around the same time as Infinite's Season 4 and thats at the earliest and even then the most minor of things. It will take years before we see large sweeping directional changes. For those reasons though Infinite I think will not be saved. Sadly they waited too long for this and by the time we start seeing anything substantial 2 or 3 years from now Infinite will be done for if frankly it even lasts that long. This also doesn't address what happens to the other big names who've been negatively affecting the series like Frankie or Kiki. What of them? What about the other toxic elements of 343i because it wasn't JUST Bonnie that was the problem. I mean hell, Snickerdoodle joined my MCC match, insulted me then left and I got video evidence of that and you know what happened when I posted about it on Twitter? Blocked by everyone relevant and my Waypoint account was "put on hold". If you still have people like that still in your company then it doesn't matter if you just replace the head.

I still hold EA's mistreatment of the Battlefield games dwarfs Halo's decline. Battlefield was a juggernaut. Something people would literally debate buying when christmas came around "hmm, Call of Duty? Or Battlefield?" I still believe the fall of Battlefield is more significant than 343, as I can at least say the gameplay feels good in Halo Infinite, where BF2042 feels awful.
thankyou for potentially sparking the saving change for my favorite franchise that I have been waiting for, for over a decade. Watching 343 exclusively flog a franchise I wish I hadn't been so invested in as a child, as I have grown into a big hairy adult has hurt my mind and soul.
For those that want to argue with Charlie he makes some extremely valid points. Not only do I think every halo that 343 has gotten their hands on have been disasters even the MCC to a certain extent, but even halo infinite a pretty solid game has been COMPLETELY and UTTERLY mismanaged. I’d say his points are completely valid in the criteria he’s specified.
MCC didn't work for four damn years and was pretty much completely dead before they decided to port it to pc, it was definitely a disaster and arguably their worst game
Every time I think of Halo, I only remember the older games like Reach, ODST, Halo 3-1 as relics from a great past, I don't even see Halo 4, 5, or Infinite as real games but rather App-store / Google Play store Halo bootlegs. They just don't exist to me.

I still put the blame on Halo's decline solely on the shoulders of Microsoft. They built 343 to make their idea of what Halo should be. It's not a game for the fans anymore, it's a game for the shareholders, with 343 as the fall guys for all the community backlash, just as designed.

Put thousands of hours in Halo 2, 3, ODST and Reach which literally defined my youth in gaming, only to feel less and less enticed to play when 4 released and so on. I might give infinite a shot just to play the campaign free through Game Pass, and that's it. You can literally tell when 343 got their hands on it, it sucked out the HALO soul and my connection to the franchise with it.
My sister and I played halo 2 for days to complete in all the different modes, and the newer games I’ve bought don’t give the same hype. It’s disappointing.

I agree on the conclusion but DICE is really taking a swing at that title with BF5 and BF2042 both failing in spectacular fashion so badly they had to cancel the life cycle early for BF5 and its definitely looking that way for 2042 considering they already had to announce a new entry

It's debatable to be honest Charlie. The people mad at you don't know what a good game is nor can they realize when something is bad, Battlefield 2042 taught me that.
Using Charlie’s criteria EA is worse, Anthem, BFV,BF2042,etc EA can not make a good game. Ea blamed Halo for BF2042 doing bad. If Halo is bad BF2042 is worse.

When Charlie said Infinite had a budget of 500 million dollars I had to stop the video and just think for a minute. I cannot for the life of me work out where that money could have possibly gone.

It really wasn't. Idk about sales figures, but in online conversations, it was always Halo and CoD. Battlefield was like the third wheel, certain titles cropped up sometimes, not every one, and not with the same frequency.

343 staff constantly leaving is because they're all on contracts. 343 has constantly been hiring contractors instead of permanent staff, which means that the majority of the dev team's time is taken up trying to learn the engine and continue the work of the employee before them.
However, now that Bonnie is gone, hopefully that will change and they'll finally have a consistent, stable development team.

Would probably take a few years to get off the ground, but Charlie has enough good will built up at this point to make it happen if he wanted to. Given how mediocre this industry is now I have to imagine there's people out there waiting for someone with even a modicum of ambition to lead the way. A lot of these companies only continue on at this point because of their previously successful IPs and brand name recognition.

I had a bad feeling about 343s capabilities as a game studio as soon as I finished 4 the Christmas it came out, it wasnt that it was over all a bad game, but the fact that Halo would never be the same ever again, when the very studio that created and perfected the series prior no longer wanted to have a hand in their own creation is when the plug shouldve been pulled.

I love Halo, I probably always will love Halo. But Charlie's points are right. 343i is struggling to maintain their one property. They made a live-service game but forgot the live-service part, and the absurd rate of management turnover is easily felt in the quality of Infinite right now

Fallen Order was alright. Fan base is still there. But even the most hardcore Halo fans that have every novel, and everything are struggling to find anything good. Simply put 343 doesn't even have the identity of Halo down. They focused soo much on competition and function they took out many guns for a few. They added anti fun mechanics such as a progression system that requires specific actions for achievements. And make you buy color for one specific armor. No other game I can think of has color sold and locked when 5 other games of the same series prior had all color free. Every Halo story from 343 is kill, change, or resurrect Cortana. They can't even commit to any story moment because they have to offscreen everything. Then the only good story they had was the outsourced story...and somehow make them all James Bond villains, where their incompetence is showing. 1 or 2 biome campaign, 6 multiplayer maps, they didn't even have slayer at launch...the most popular game mode. And it took them months to fix that and big team battle. And considering there's less weapons in Halo Infinite than most other Halo games you think they would've had the guns balanced, also competitive gaming was their focus. Nope there was even a OFFICIAL competition where teams had to agree not to pick up the mangler...Because somehow 343 couldn't even REMOVE it from game.

HW2 is completely unsupported by 343 and creative assembly these days... its still a massively fun RTS, my boyfriend and I play it frequently but its only a matter of time before the servers for Halo Wars 2 are shut down :(

The only thing I liked about Halo Wars was kinda experiencing the battles and world and vehicles from like a commanders birds eye view or whatever. But that got old fast I also lost interest in the Halo games entirely because there's better games out there these days. I played Halo Infinite I think it was the online one with the b pass anyway, and got the Halo collection but it feels like nothing has changed or has been made better in a way that is exciting anymore. Don't expect that from the collection but the newer ones to me are just a better styled version of what Halo has already been for ages now.
as a halo fanboy of over a decade, and avid player of infinite, even in its stark decline, I have to agree with Charlie. The gameplay is so much fun, but their “support” for the game is just bad, downright trash.

The problem is they have so drastically shifted from the “party game” ideas that bungee had developed. Doing so they have stripped the entire social aspect of halo. The best times I’ve had playing halo were custom games and seeing the goofy playlists and maps people had created. You had the options to search for lobbies where people were talking. You could view other players screenshots and custom maps and modes they had made just by clicking on their name. Now it’s all about ‘we have to be a competitive esports game’ and can’t even seem to get that right. Instead of copying and pasting what had come before like CoD they just update graphics and remove previous content past halo games had and call it a new game. it’s so disappointing.
Damn now I miss that custom game mode where you was in a warthog falling down an endless slope while infected players tried to kill you with gravity hammers....good times...

diehard Halo fan here, you're 100% right and twitter should always be ignored. i made so many excuses for Infinite at the beginning bc i was so excited they seemed to be returning to Halo's roots with the music and design choices, plus they even brought back Joe Staten, but not even he could single-handedly finish this game for them. i continued supporting them even after the shock of no campaign co-op on launch; i can't do it anymore. how many times can a fan forgive a company that clearly has no love or respect for the game they're making?

The biggest problem is the management and leadership. They are in charge of what happens, while the developers are spending a lot of effort on making the game. If the leadership was a lot better and if Joe Staten was the leader of 343 from the start, then this would be an entirely different story

I wont lie, I hope the best for bonnie and her family. mint blitz confirmed that Chris lee is still apart of Microsoft( he was the head of fps games) he hit the nail on the head with the video and information that no big youtuber including Charlie has covered its sad to see the jump on the 343 bandwagon without the information.
In the long run while it remains to be seen how this change will affect things I don't see Halo getting much worse than it already is. However it will without a doubt take a long time for anything from all this to trickle down to the end products. I wouldn't expect to see even the first most minor of changes from this until at least the second half of next year, roughly around the same time as Infinite's Season 4 and thats at the earliest and even then the most minor of things. It will take years before we see large sweeping directional changes. For those reasons though Infinite I think will not be saved. Sadly they waited too long for this and by the time we start seeing anything substantial 2 or 3 years from now Infinite will be done for if frankly it even lasts that long. This also doesn't address what happens to the other big names who've been negatively affecting the series like Frankie or Kiki. What of them? What about the other toxic elements of 343i because it wasn't JUST Bonnie that was the problem. I mean hell, Snickerdoodle joined my MCC match, insulted me then left and I got video evidence of that and you know what happened when I posted about it on Twitter? Blocked by everyone relevant and my Waypoint account was "put on hold". If you still have people like that still in your company then it doesn't matter if you just replace the head.

I still hold EA's mistreatment of the Battlefield games dwarfs Halo's decline. Battlefield was a juggernaut. Something people would literally debate buying when christmas came around "hmm, Call of Duty? Or Battlefield?" I still believe the fall of Battlefield is more significant than 343, as I can at least say the gameplay feels good in Halo Infinite, where BF2042 feels awful.
thankyou for potentially sparking the saving change for my favorite franchise that I have been waiting for, for over a decade. Watching 343 exclusively flog a franchise I wish I hadn't been so invested in as a child, as I have grown into a big hairy adult has hurt my mind and soul.
For those that want to argue with Charlie he makes some extremely valid points. Not only do I think every halo that 343 has gotten their hands on have been disasters even the MCC to a certain extent, but even halo infinite a pretty solid game has been COMPLETELY and UTTERLY mismanaged. I’d say his points are completely valid in the criteria he’s specified.

Halo 4 slapped and 5 had some of the best multiplayer
Every time I think of Halo, I only remember the older games like Reach, ODST, Halo 3-1 as relics from a great past, I don't even see Halo 4, 5, or Infinite as real games but rather App-store / Google Play store Halo bootlegs. They just don't exist to me.

I still put the blame on Halo's decline solely on the shoulders of Microsoft. They built 343 to make their idea of what Halo should be. It's not a game for the fans anymore, it's a game for the shareholders, with 343 as the fall guys for all the community backlash, just as designed.

Put thousands of hours in Halo 2, 3, ODST and Reach which literally defined my youth in gaming, only to feel less and less enticed to play when 4 released and so on. I might give infinite a shot just to play the campaign free through Game Pass, and that's it. You can literally tell when 343 got their hands on it, it sucked out the HALO soul and my connection to the franchise with it.
My sister and I played halo 2 for days to complete in all the different modes, and the newer games I’ve bought don’t give the same hype. It’s disappointing.

Using Charlie’s criteria EA is worse, Anthem, BFV,BF2042,etc EA can not make a good game. Ea blamed Halo for BF2042 doing bad. If Halo is bad BF2042 is worse.
Fun Fact: I have a Computer Science degree and was fresh out of college in 2019 and I got calls and emails trying to recruit me to work on Halo Infinite as a contractor. 343 even wanted to outsource development to fresh graduates to work on a huge game as their first job that isn't even "a career gig". To this day, I still get calls occasionally to work on it. Sad days as a developer.
