@@Heike-- Actually many of the wildfires we have in CA are manmade, PG&E has caused many of them. Also, they're increasingly a problem because environmental organizations prohibit managing CA forests to reduce the fuel of these wildfires, which is why they get so big. Case in point: recently an environmental group is trying to stop firefighters from using fire retardant on wildfires because some if it gets in the lakes and kills fish. This is the kind of crazy you only get in CA.
I loved the detail of how they both had obscure "occupations" and a budget that's ridiculously high.
there is nothing obscure about it, my 22 year old sister is a ticket scalper, that is all she does, and earn about $400 every once in a while from buying "tswifty merch" and selling it for markup, overall she is net negative but the +$400 wins she occasionally gets keeps my mother investing in her company that will eventually turn a profit... probably.
i wish this was a joke, i really do. but she really is a ticket scalper and that is all she ever was and all she ever will be. and of course i have to do everything she says and listen to her because what do i know.. im just a male person... even though i work a full time job im just a useless male that doesnt know anything. and her room is filled with priceless tswift merch and exclusive VIP tickets that one day she will sell for a profit.

I lived in SoCal, this sketch totally nails reality there! Everything is so good, from the crazy occupations, location names, and even the optimism of the agent. Gotta love the husband’s excitement about all of it and the wife’s reality checks. I always thought House Hunters was ridiculously unrealistic, but this is so spot on for California!

We were out in Silicon Valley working with a startup many years ago. There was a full page add in the Mercury News I still remember. It had a couple sitting on the front stairs of a cottage. The caption was "I always wanted a million dollar home, I just expected more than a thousand square feet"

That's about right for the gay bay. My dad and uncle sold my grandfather's rent home in the bay area (he passed 2 years ago and my grand parents bought it in the 80's for around 70k) for 800k and it's just under 800 square feet. You literally pa around 1000 dollars a square foot there. It's insane.

I was expecting to read about someone living in a tent in the back yard. There have been real cases of renters doing that in The Valley, or renting 6x3 ft. floor space in someone's house (ie. a place to sleep).
I was so happy when I was able to afford to upgrade from a tent for a van to live in. I later added an optional bonus room by renting a environmental controlled storage unit that had late hours. I hope to add a full bathroom soon when I can afford a gym membership.
Try renting a small office across the street from a gym . I have a friend who actually did this. I think he was paying something like 2 or 3 hundred a month. You can go even cheaper by living in a storage unit, but weather extremes, especially in the summer in Vegas, make that a rough go.

Last year my sister was trying to buy a house in San Diego. She had a short list of very reasonable/normal requirements and a budget of $1.1 million. She and her husband couldn't find anything and wound up moving to another state.
Was it a red state? I bet it was.
For $1.1M I could buy 50-100 acres in the Texas Hill Country with a decent sized 2500 sq Ft house on it.

Mortgage payments if you include your taxes, on a $450k home here would probably be about the same payment as a $550k home in, say, Tennessee.

In Finland families with a newborn get a box full of baby essentials from the government. The box includes a foam mattress and a sleeping bag and is actually great as the baby's first bed, being the right size for the little one. So there are real baby-boxes out there!

We moved to Tenn three years ago and upsized from three bedrooms two bath 1,400 sq ft -to a five bed, four bath 4,300 sq ft and two acres with a huge deck and a pool.

I grew up in Rancho Cucamonga and recognized the mountains in the background. It was great growing up there but we moved out nearly 30 years ago. I still love the state of California but the people there now make it totally unlivable.

In my mailbox today I got a realtor postcard flyer with a listing near me for a 5 acre horse property with an over 3000 sq ft, 3.5 car garage gorgeous custom home, a big stable, huge fenced corral, and a massive 66'x 120' indoor riding barn next to the stable for when you want to ride and the weather is bad. Asking price is $699k, and I'm in IL where the market is considered high and people are fleeing.

I think #3 was certainly the smart choice for them. Plenty of sunlight and space for a growing family. Rates are currently high, so they might want to make sure they can refinance down the road though just to be safe. Maybe consider taking out a loan and getting a tarp to help protect their new property. Plenty of options for them. ; )

They should do a Denver or Seattle version of this tent hunting. Really it’s sad more than anything what is occurring. People can write comments but it’s really heartbreaking to walk in the woods and find childrens toys because there is no room for them in the shelters nor is there actual things being done just discussions and disappearing money
It’s because homelessness turned into a bit of a racket for politicians and Non-Profit Organizations. They’re paid to deal with the problem, and sometimes make damn good money. If that’s the case - they’re going to be incentivized to keep around a homeless population to line their pockets.

I fled the LA 3 years ago. Whatever the opposite of nostalgia is is what I'm feeling right now. I'm living off grid so it starts out like a homeless person but I'm on five acres of my own property. Beautiful green woods, my chickens and dogs, and neighbors I can only hear in the distance. For less than a tenth of what their "budget" was.

This is true of every Western nation these days. I've met so many people working full-time and living in vehicles. In my parents' generation, a job where you had to travel a lot and stay in motels was considered a bad job, but now that type of job is a dream job as people actually have a bed to sleep in and the employer pays for your cheap motel when you're travelling for work.

Knew a kid who had the nickname, "boxbaby." His parents said that's just what they naturally called him since they were on welfare and hadn't got that extra money for another child, so Boxbaby had a cardboard box for a cradle.

I have a nephew who sold houses in California for the last several years. Recently, he moved to Florida. He didn’t give a reason for the move, he just up and went.
