RivieraByBuick You can't even imagine how a blind person hears sounds, notes! They "see" with their ears and hands, because they have developed those senses in a way we can't even think about. This guy has an almost impossible sense of music perfectly playing what he hears just once. How can you say he doesn't feel it? Watch a few other videos, he gets emotions from notes like you and me get them from a wonderful painting or monument. Keep it up Derek, in this century of mass-music you are one of the rare exceptions!!
uzituchi for me, as for professional musician which have seen a lot, this is just an average children musical school level (in my country at least). i see that he is "different" from most people, but the fact he has health issues does not make me raise him among others. i try to be objective.
RivieraByBuick You should watch some of the docs on him, you can see why he is so special. If you were a real musician then you would understand why he's so talented.
I think blind musicians use their “mind’s eye” to visualise where the keys are in the same way touch typists can write without looking down at the keyboard.
Am I dreaming right now? This is not talent or a gift. This is something else, something only Derek can do and no one else can tag or study or name or describe. What is happening here is above all, beyond, out of reach. God Bless you Derek, you absolutely beautiful person.
Derek, I've only just discovered your talent after watching the UA-cam series "Mind Field," and I am loving listening to you play! Thank you for sharing with everybody! Beautiful.
Thank you Derek! That is really beautiful. You are among the best and you are the best. You are unique. You reflect God's beauty and you bring joy the world over. Thank you again.
Lots of tweaks in his version, and he even takes out a bit of the "Hungarian Rhapsody" from the famous "Cat Concerto" episode from Tom and Jerry cartoons. I love his feeling and excitement of this most-beloved of all Liszt pieces since his "3rd Liebestraum". He even knew part of the standard cadenza that is often played before the famous Prestissimo finale in the "Frisk" version of the Rhapsody. Great job, Derek!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
¡¡Sen-ci-lla-men-te-fe-no-me-nalll!!... What those few are missing is that Derek does *covers* of the classical pieces. He jazzez them up and adds his own touch stealing them a bit (in a good way) and making them his own in a way. Derek reminds me of that legendary scene from the Forman's "Amadeus", where Mozart bursts into the room and pimps up the composition that Salieri composed as a gift for the Keiser, just after hearing it once from the next room behind closed doors. ua-cam.com/video/-ciFTP_KRy4/v-deo.html
His fingers are way too short to be doing the Horowitz/Shishkin flatness. It’s just a technical thing, but I do respect his talent at jazz and ability to overcome his blindness immensely
I learned about Derek about 5 years ago and have always enjoyed how he plays. It is amazing when you see how he takes a few notes and turns them into a complete performance. From when I was first introduced to him til now, he has really grown in his skills of interaction, his musical ability continues to be sheer genius! I would love to hear his version of Ravel's Bolero.
I can only wonder, why any one would down vote this brilliant young artist, this video? Only some one that is jealous of raw, pure talent. Some one that feels threatened by an innocent beautiful human being that shares their gift with the world. I feel blessed to have listened to him perform. I know he cannot read this, but I think maybe some one on his channel who knows him could say, Thank you for blessing us with your gift, Derek.n You perform beautifully! :)
Was just rewatching The Musical Genius with some friends and they asked for me to show them your youtube channel performances. They all agree that you're fantastic and an amazing guy with phenomenal talent. Thank you for all the beautiful music!
amazing. Perfect pitch? no doubt. Many people believe, myself included, that the highly specialized instrumental music from the common era are the product of composers with varied degrees of autism. Only that way to explain the high degree of concentration and memorization it demands. You're in good company, Bach was blind in his last days, Beethoven was deaf but had perfect pitch. Keep it up.
And I thought Tom Brier was good... This guy is absolutely amazing! I thought sightreading Liszt is impossible and now comes this guy and does not sightread, but plays this masterpiece BY EAR!
yeeah... Hate to break it to you, but this is not really "sight-heared". The notes he is playing is not what Liszt wrote, so it's ignorant to consider this a true performance of HR 2. Rather a pseudo version, a lot easier than the real one
Oh, you are right. :D Didnt realize it, since its long ago when I last heard the 'official' Hungarian Rhapsody. Thanks though, for kindly pointing that out ;) Nevertheless, this guy is still pretty amazing!
I LOVE hearing and seeing you play .. I really admire your abilities ... Could you perhaps play "Revolutionary Etude - Chopin" oder "Totentanz - Liszt"? I really really would love to hear them from you. They are one of my favorites. Thank you for your videos.
If I hadn't seen it I wouldn't have believed it ! The words talented & gifted don't even start to describe your ability. To be able to play spontaneously any piece of music in any style is just sheer genius !! Keep those videos coming Derek.
What an absolute treat to stumble on this site and be privy to few others that have had the chance to listen and watch this talent ! GENIUS can't describe the gift. I would have to wonder if ,unsighted, maybe better ? NOT a chance. I would bet he could gather the honey from the local hive before playing Fight of the bumblebee ! Thank you Derek and may your God given talent ever exist ! As a youngster, I passed by a church in the soaking rain returning from my Karate class. There was a person playing Toccata in D minor Fugue by J.S.Bach and I sat there in awe of the moment and being treated to a heavenly experience. That moment will never be effaced from my mind .
You are an amazing genius, and the living proof that Nature never does mistakes : your handicap has turned into gold. We're eager to ear more classical music played by you ! Best regards. Julien from France.
I browse Derek's old stuff every now and then! Reading the description I couldn't help but wonder if Derek has another way of learning songs than by ear?
He really does learn everything by ear. Sometimes he'll hear the entire piece many times, sometimes only once, sometimes he'll be shown by someone else on the piano, but his perfect pitch and musical ear is the key that unlocks everything for him.
"Echoes of the Sounds to Be" is amazing. Is he coming up with a recording of his own compositions? My husband and sons love jazz. It would be great to produce new ones coz he's incredibly amazing at it ... even just the improvisations of already existing music.
Ha, for whatever reason, I watched most of his other videos before seeing this one. I'd wondered a lot how he'd manage with a piece like this, and the answer is... even better than I expected.
Longer pieces like this are definitely more challenging for Derek. He grasps patterns and harmonies very easily, but lengthy pieces with lots of sections in in a specific order with a specific number of repeats with small differences each time are much more difficult for him to learn accurately. That said, he did learn this entirely by ear and memory after a few weeks of hearing it played on CD every day or two.
Amazing! I saw Derek on 60 Minutes, years ago! Do you think he could play Fur Elise as if Mozart wrote it again? I would really love to learn to play it!
Amazing. The notes seem to flow naturally from Derek's hands like a fluently spoken language
Beautiful
Whoever said Derek doesn't play with emotion is a fool. Look at his face as he plays this. This is beautiful Derek!
ammm.someone should explain you probably, that emotions regarded to music is not what appears on the face, but it is a feel in music.

Dirk Diggler
if u were a musician u wouldn`t say the shit u said.
i just find it incredible that he just knows where all the keys are without being able to see them, or indeed having EVER seen them. Mind blowing
I think blind musicians use their “mind’s eye” to visualise where the keys are in the same way touch typists can write without looking down at the keyboard.
its not horribly hard... takes spacial awareness and practice for people with sight to train it... its not complicated, just takes repetition

Yeah same!
Little know fact ... Derek has never lost a tickle fight.
ooh
I could say something, or i could not.
@@lukesmith8896 i'm pretty sure he didnt try that type of a fight
but he would win it for sure
Thank you Derek! That is really beautiful. You are among the best and you are the best. You are unique. You reflect God's beauty and you bring joy the world over. Thank you again.
He knows love. Her name is music. I am happy for him.
Cash Johnston And you know the poetictrees.
The hardest thing in listening you is not to cry :) and thye are the tears of joy...
Derek Your amazing! You need to play on a grand piano! You deserve it.
Lots of tweaks in his version, and he even takes out a bit of the "Hungarian Rhapsody" from the famous "Cat Concerto" episode from Tom and Jerry cartoons.

Great job, Derek!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'd love to see his take on "La Campanella" by Liszt. Thats something ive been looking forward to seeing.
Im also still waiting for this
@@TimSoriano 3 years later and still am waiting on it.
Sir, you deserve a Steinway grand! You are amazing! Kudos.
Can you do La Campanella? Please!
Genuinely my favourite performance of this piece, just incredible
Derek is so chill
Most Respect. Thank you for what you give to the community of man.
Derek clearly you're a genius, but you're also a treasure as a person. Big fan!
Guy's got such a big heart as well as a god given talent.
I would give you my eyes for 1% of your talent. Amazing
lol
Maybe 35%

I'd love to see him play La Campanella by Liszt! I hope to see him play that one at some point..
I think the constant leaps in the right hand won't be possible for this guy considering that he's blind, but who knows.
@@currywurst5132 Nobuyuki Tsujii is blind and can play it
He doesn’t seem to have any problem jumping around on the keys
Derek's videos always make my day! Someone give him a hug for me :]
Absolutely amazing! I am always shocked at how well blind people play.... but this is.... words can't describe it! Thank you so much, Derek!
You are amazing Derek.
Why in the world is there 1 dislike? How could anyone dislike this amazing person?
It's not the person, it's the technique.

Remarkable and incredible to think he learned this entire piece by ear.
I feel by soul not by ear is a complete gift from God
Bravo! Derek
I would love to hear Derek play either Chopin's Black Keys etude of his Ocean etude. Keep up the great work!

I love how you can feel the difference between the single Idea in this rhapsody just by the way he plays them. just lovely

The hardest part about this song, I think, is the timing. But he gets it perfect of course because he's incredible.

that piano is crisp from top to bottom, the notes sound true and distinct - that's a nice piano for reduced floor space, I'd take the lid off.
I think the fun of Rondo a capriccio would be a fantastically fun song for Derek to do.
