  • On 31 March 2022, at about 0741 local time, 2 Microflite Airbus EC130 helicopters, registered VH‑WVV and VH-XWD, departed the Batman Park helicopter landing site in Melbourne, for the town of Ulupna, Victoria. The helicopters encountered instrument meteorological conditions (IMC) over Mount Disappointment and VH-WVV conducted a U-turn to avoid entering cloud. While also attempting to conduct a U-turn, VH-XWD entered cloud, developed a high rate of descent, and collided with terrain. The helicopter was destroyed and the 5 occupants were fatally injured.

Good stuff! get in the soup watch the instruments straight and level and never decrease altitude.

Continued VFR into IMC is particularly dangerous for helicopters because they’re inherently unstable and fly closer to the ground, making instrument flying quite difficult.

IMC is best avoided unless you are in an autopilot equiped helicopter and current flying on Instruments IN IMC. If you don't have both don't enter cloud or very low viz areas. It's the same accident over and over. VFR pilot into IMC or VFR pilot into a dark area at Night same outcome 90% of the time.

Another thing that could compound is there are still some operators tout here that will pressure pilots to fly in unfavorable wx conditions. I get that PIC is final authority but it can weigh on a person when their job is on the line. Failure on the companies leadership/safety standards. Should have been no reason for the pilots to push it like that and instead be confident in management to have their back when they decline flights for this very reason. Pisses me off.

Synthetic Vision is the only thing that matters, completely eliminates CFIT. It's been around now for 15 years and make IMC no big deal.
