It was definitely a blind joke, i remember listening to the dvd commentary as a kid. They wanted the fight to be like a sibling fight where "you go for the throat".
I will pretend it's not there, because sibling fights work because you know each other your whole life, and are aware of each other boundaries. At that point Toph and Katara are strangers/just became friends, they don't have this level of familiarity to just 'sibling' fight. That's just plain cruelty.

The main reason why all the blind jokes in this series work is because Toph is such a capable and independent character that even her friends forget she can't see. I'm pretty sure this is the only case that _could_ be seen as genuinely malicious. Every other one is just gut-wrenching. 😆
Them pointing out the way this (being the tent stars thing) could be a blind joke is literally the first time I've ever thought about it that way, and I've seen this series probably 20-30 something times back to front. The audience forgets too ig lmao
I still don't think it was a blind joke this time (on Katara's part), I think she legitimately forgets because Toph can see a lot of things. There are other instances of the Gaang forgetting.
I was gonna make that exact same first part of the comment. I have a friend like that's so capable that I forget she's blind and I ask if she can see certain things >.

@@Flugel_HalogenMissing the point, again. Katara is not motherly because she thinks the group needs a mother. Something I just realized during this reaction. Toph is overcompensating during this. It's her first time truly being out and free. Not having to go back home and hide again after. She's "letting loose" fully for the first time. Makes sense for a kid too
Exactly. Her entire life she has been coddled and babied, and this is the first time that she has been able to assert her independence. But, being new to this kind of freedom and social interaction, she's doing so in a way that puts people off. It's all just a part of growing and the experience.
That comment was 100% a dig at Toph's blindness from Katara. I remember in the DVD commentary, the creators were talking about the big debate over if that line went too far. I think they decided they wanted them to have a sisterly relationship, and thought that low blow fit. Looking back at the stupid arguments I had with my sister growing up it totally makes sense. It was always uncalled for but sometimes we just went for the throat with insults.😂 Making up afterward brought us closer together.
I do find it interesting that there is such a split about whether or not Katara was making a jab on Toph's blindness or not. Never really expected that there to be such a divide on such a line. Personally, however, I always saw it as a Katara taking the jab. She is stressed from the chase, sleep deprived, and angry with Toph because of the argument earlier. I can 100% believe that she would make for such a low blow like that in that condition. Not to mention Toph's own reaction feels like she clearly took it as a comment on blindness. She didn't just insult Katara back, but straight up 'attacked' her. Admittedly in the earthbender version of jabbing your elbow into someones side, but still its pretty clear she didn't appreciate the comment. Plus, as people said, the DVD commentary admits that the line is intended as such a jab due to the sisterly relationship they wanted to develop between Katara and Toph as the story moves forward.
Nah, Katara definitely went straight for the blind joke with that savage "Too bad you can't see them" line :) When she's angry, she doesn't go from 0 to 100, she goes from 0 to 1000
It really is crazy how impactful that scene is, considering we only just met Toph, and we all already love her so much that meeting Iroh fills us with so much joy!
Katara's jab at Toph for not being able to see the stars definitely is intended to be interpreted both ways and I'm pretty sure Toph herself took it as Katara mocking her blindness, considering she gave Katara a solid back massage as a response.

It’s actually a running gag that the gang legit forget Toph is blind with how capable she is, katara’s line in this one however is entire about her being blind
I feel like people using the "Toph left home to be with the Gaang" thing to defend Toph's behavior comes off mute when you realize that Katara and Sokka did the same thing. Katara and Sokka left home to be with Aang on his journey and Toph has the same story beats but she gets to act like an abbrassive one because...reasons...I get that Katara was a jerk this episode, but, and when I say this, I'm not entirely this way but it just kind of hurts, but we can't excuse Toph either. All Katara asks is that she contributes, nothing more, nothing less. Toph, instead of helping, makes excuses and uses the excuse of, "I left home to be here, I should take a break, etc" makes no sense to anything. Toph has no excuse and she comes off as way too privileged in this episode. I am very glad Katara and Toph figure out why they were in the wrong but my god, does it hurt when people only say Katara was in the wrong this episode...
Katara didn’t intend for it to be a blind joke since Toph is inside, Katara is sleep deprived, and likely forgot she’s blind to begin with, but yeah it was a blind joke for the audience lol
I mean in the gaang's (minus Sokka) defense, Toph is very abrasive at first. And people love excusing that and condemning Katara because she's a fan favorite. The whole 'she left her life behind ' point is almost moot since we know she ran away completely by choice. She's not helping and lashing out at the expectation that she should help. That'd be annoying to anyone, sleep deprived or no.
Ye, that's the one thing that keeps me mad at Toph not pulling her weight. I get it narratively, but everyone wants to just listen to toph and say, "Let her be, she just left home and everything to join the group, she can do her own thing." Katara is 100% right, I'm not biased, she is one of my faves but I don't let that stop me. Toph should've helped more and her sutbborness to not help and just make herself independent from others is nothing short of annoying sometimes...
@ethelann A Mary Sue character never learns anything and is naturally gifted without even trying. They could solve any problem with the power of plot and are perfect in every grace. Katara is not a Mary Sue, look that definition up. Rey from Star Wars is a Mary Sue. Katara is a child who was forced into the role of mother and it shows through her character. She has too many flaws to be perfect and she grows up and actually learns lessons. Also, Katara doesn't even boss people around that much, it's called planning. Katara "bossing" around in this episode is not a good example because she literally asks if Toph can contribute to the group. That's what I was talking about. And sorry if this comment comes off rude or anything, but I'm just saying.
@@bluewolf6323 katara is definitely a mary sue, she only trained with the basic from the scroll they stole then suddenly she's on par with master pakku. she had a few lesson for healing (which they didn't put on the show) and suddenly she can heal aang from death. she can perform blood bending in an instant and basically obliterated hama (when hama have been perfecting blood bending for decades). azula, zuko, and toph have been training all their lives and has the best masters to guide them, toph met the OG earth benders and used her skills in the arena. katara is definitely mary sue, they overpowered her so much she's basically on the same level as the avatar 😂
@@ethelann That's not at all what happened, Katara trained on the basics of the scroll and failed multiple times and got jealous of Aang because she couldn't do it. She was not on par with Pakku, she's just stubborn but she got her ass kicked and barely got a hit out on Pakku and importantly, she knew she couldn't win. Spoilers: She healed him from death because she had special water from the spirit spring that the Northern Water Tribe gave her, so it wouldn't be surprising if that water could heal stronger, Hama taught Katara about controlling the water from anything with Katara learning straight from Hama and the full moon is out so she was stronger than Hama. Plus, Katara didn't even want to learn blood bending, but she had to because Hama was about to murder her friends. Katara has masters, she learned from master Pakku and Hama to hone her skills and refine. A mary sue implies that Katara learned shit out of nowhere and that she never loses, not once. Katara has failed and suffered multiple times and for that, she can get better. Everything she learns is derived from somewhere.
This episode and multiple more after it prove VERY WELL that it doesn't matter who you are and where you come from, it's impossible to meet Iroh without him sitting you down for tea and a life lesson/pep talk. He'll change your life for the better in ways you never expected. The world needs more Iroh's. I wanna be somebody's Iroh someday, when I'm older.
I know it's not really a fight but the ty Lee vs sokka will always be great is goofy but still cool imo ty lee is such a great character and her fighting style is always cool
My favourite episode in the whole show. From Katara and Toph tearing into each other to the different fights and then that ending with Iroh... Its constant tension and many great lines.
10:19 Ty Lee used her Chi-blocking with open hands until before this fight with Sokka. Since she hurt her fingers hitting his head, she's done Chi-blocking with closed fists instead lol😂😅 It would definitely hurt to hit someone's forehead with open-handed strikes... I speak from experience as a Kung Fu practitioner.
I know I'm late to this but I wanted to share some trivia/interesting facts. You know the moment were azula hits iroh with fire because he looks away at everyone else? Turns out he didn't do that cause he recognized toph from a few mins ago or how he just now realized she was traveling with the avatar, Iroh is a seasoned war vet so he knows not to take his eye off his opponent. The reason he did this was supposed to be for another reason, one that got changed during book 3 IIRC. You see, Iroh was supposed to be a traitor to zuko, in book three they were supposed to reveal Iroh as a sort of spy and betray zuko in the end BUT they thankfully changed their minds, when Iroh looks at team avatar it is his sizing them up to see if him and azula could take them all, it that one moment Iroh and azula could of taken down zuko, and the avatar and the fire nation would of won the war. But what happened was either A. Azula jumped the gun and didn't know Iroh was a spy OR she did know he was a spy and used him as an escape goat because she is pure evil, or B. Iroh took to long and azula used it as her way out because she didn't know Iroh was a spy. Tho, becuase they made the decision to not make Iroh betray Zuko during book 3 this interaction was played off as "Oh shit, it's that girl and the avatar and his companions" but it was originally done as "Can we take them here and now?" It's interesting once you know that Iroh during book 1 and 2 is a spy and the actions he took were all fake/enjoyable as his character actually was his character in the end.
Well there was always going to be growing pains with a group, and with Azula continually chasing the group by following Appa's sheddings, the sleep deprivation has made tensions run high already. This does however lead to an interesting standoff; Aang vs Azula vs Zuko, until the rest of the group and Iroh's arrival leads to Azula being cornered, she picked her target well though, since Zuko was very protective of Iroh after being injured. This also serves to bridge the three parties together, since in Omashu Aang didn't know who Azula or her squad were other than Fire Nation, but we also snuck in an unlikely friendship between Toph and Iroh, unaware that they're technically enemies.
the way zuko fights in this is kinda evident that he's not on his A game either and compared to his sister who always has to be perfect its the first real example of the both of them in a fight together even with one handicapped and how they handle it. I was so excited for you guys to see this episode! its so good~
Katara can be a menace 😂😂 The moment were the team and Zuko shoot all elements towards Azula is poster worthy! And damn you some good predictions sometimes, and sometimes dont😂😂 Keep up!

@@bluewolf6323katara is always commanding everyone it's getting annoying. she's such a mary sue
Spoilers:
She healed him from death because she had special water from the spirit spring that the Northern Water Tribe gave her, so it wouldn't be surprising if that water could heal stronger, Hama taught Katara about controlling the water from anything with Katara learning straight from Hama and the full moon is out so she was stronger than Hama.
Oh jeez
4:00 waiting for "What's wrong MomOH NO"
6:30 Aang always gets pissed when Appa's involved

This episode and multiple more after it prove VERY WELL that it doesn't matter who you are and where you come from, it's impossible to meet Iroh without him sitting you down for tea and a life lesson/pep talk. He'll change your life for the better in ways you never expected. The world needs more Iroh's. I wanna be somebody's Iroh someday, when I'm older.
I know it's not really a fight but the ty Lee vs sokka will always be great is goofy but still cool imo ty lee is such a great character and her fighting style is always cool
The best part is when she punches his head and only succeeds in hurting herself.
My favourite episode in the whole show. From Katara and Toph tearing into each other to the different fights and then that ending with Iroh... Its constant tension and many great lines.
Sleep Deprived Katara is just savage
I remember the first time I saw the toph and iron interaction. Such a great scene, they were both my favourite characters at the time.
I speak from experience as a Kung Fu practitioner.
if you notice when everybody blasted azula you can see soka's boomerang with the elemental blast. even do he doest bend he still tries
14:28 Water, Earth, Fire, Air... and Sokka's Boomerang
When you are trying to work out if a character has died, but it's really unclear - That's rough buddy
Katara out of context is low key ableist but the gaang forgets toph is blind all the time
I like this fight azula was pretty much fighting aang and zuko no problem
"Zuko kinda became like Sokka."
Oh just you wait.
After all this time I would assume that the Team would find wanted posters of Zuko and Iroh
the way zuko fights in this is kinda evident that he's not on his A game either and compared to his sister who always has to be perfect its the first real example of the both of them in a fight together even with one handicapped and how they handle it. I was so excited for you guys to see this episode! its so good~
Ehhh, Zuko at his A Game at that point would be at best the equivalent of Azula at her E game to be frank.
Katara can be a menace 😂😂
The moment were the team and Zuko shoot all elements towards Azula is poster worthy!
And damn you some good predictions sometimes, and sometimes dont😂😂
Keep up!
I never interpreted Toph not seeing stars as a blind joke lmao that would've been ruthless
Yes dudes...Katara went for the blind joke there. Toph was being a jerk out of inexperience. Katara was just being a jerk. In a lot of ways I am on Katara's side in the dispute...but she went overboard.
The battle scene is amazing...Azula holding her own against EVERYONE.
And once again, the MVP is Appa.
chocolate milk is a 5 year old's whiskey.
I was savoring my sips on that rig like a depressed noir detective watching my Saturday morning cartoons
lol
This for me was the 1st 10/10 episode from ATLA.
Not all lizards are good at swimming, it would be completely reasonable to assume they wouldn't want to get their ectothermic bodies into cold, rushing water.
Those drums at the start made me think of Drums of Liberation lol
It's def a blind joke from katara
just to remind you, be the person uncle iroh knows you can be
I love this episode for the Iroh and Toph interaction
"They would have made it abundantly clear if someone died"
Oof
You know, it was really unclear.
14:51 when someone in the earth kingdom asks zuko his name
9:49 It's a Yoshi!
Whole time his go to fighting style is dodge and evade he’s rarely on the offensive. That’s why he struggles against opponents just as skilled and relentless
Brazilian dub when Iroh got shot and Zuko screams is SO good
A dublagem brasileira é muito boa
@@joaobaka8404 Eu acho mil vezes melhor q a americana, ainda mais em Avatar

"Hold on there Jethro!"
“In a weird way Zuko has become Sokka.”
HOLY SHIT 😱
Also love Toph's relationship with Uncle Iroh
2:45 nope.......that was definitely a blind joke lmao
Would anyone like to see Jackie Chan Adventures on here?
This is a genuinely painful episode to watch. Not because it's bad, but because it so perfectly captures the almost unreal feeling you get when you're really, really, *_REALLY_* tired.
When I watched it, I almost fell asleep myself when the Gaang finally get have a good night's rest. 😁
Katara was definitely making a blind joke 😅😅
3:00 yes. It was a blind joke. And is funny
Azula did not have do Iroh like that 😢
Definitely one of the many monuments that make you hate Azula. For attacking Iroh her own uncle like that.
@@joeldean2706 Ehhh, 100% reasonable considering that they were pretty much on different sides of a war and looking at the dynamics of that specific situation there to be frank. The love to hate villain moments were different ones.
First time all four elements are used at once on one side
No no, katara is a straight savage. That was totally a blind joke
Wow. I've rewatched this show countless times, but I never realized that the "Can't see the stars comment" could be taken as a blind joke. I've always assumed it was just because Toph was in the tent while the others weren't.
SAME!
Get ready for one of the best female cartoon villains ever 😂❤
Katara can be aggressive, but she’s not vindictive, and we see multiple times in the show that they forget Toph’s blind. I firmly believe that she straight up FORGOT Toph was blind because it’s unbelievably out of character for Katara to go that far.
"I don't think it was a blind joke." Oh no, it DEFINITELY was. And not a joke. Katara lashing out a straight up savage insult.
Lol "Five finger DEATH PUNCH!" , good one BOOM!😅👍
💀💀 the blind jk definitely was meant the way it was said cuz even if she wasn’t boxed in she still can’t see NICE SHOT THO😂
"I don't think it's a blind joke" oh my sweet summer child
2:15 Need I say anything?
They forget she is blind all he time in future episodes. So yes, she probably did not even consider she was blind
Ya'll going to add the pocket tea to your merch?🍵👴
They do always forget Toph is blind... But dang, Katarra. Read the camp.
Nah katara went for the jugular
Nah, Katara was 100% trying to rip off Toph. But Toph didn’t just eat it.
It was a blind joke theres alot throughout the series
Toth is going to quickly become one of your favorite characters along side Iro
Dang! Another episode so quick!?
The blind jokes in this show work because even toph herself makes them
ToO bAD yoU Can'T SEe TheM TOpH
Sokka is the master of rizz.
I know they already finished the series about to anyone watching this who hasn't seen it for themselves they always forget she's blind
Let's...just keep in mind that these are KIDS during WARTIME whos ages range from 12-16 yrs old their a hell of lot better put together than most of us can imagine being so any commentators that wanna give katara a hard time try to put yourself in the situation and see how better you fair cuz honestly that's the WORST trope to get cuz now your more comb through and analyzed because your the "empathetic mother who shoulders everyone's pain and put them before yourself" and any deviations from that will land you in hot water, no pun intended
Oh it was DEFINITELY a blind joke 😂 be prepared. I think this show actually handles the humor around that very respectfully but still as a dark joke 😂😅
You guys Oogwayed him
Nope, Katara 100% made ablind joke. She's been aware of her blindess all this time.
