      Yea you do have a unique calming voice btw..I got a savanha last nite, he was dehydrated and gulped down water after I forced him to. He wouldn’t move at all so I put the bowl by his face he drank and ate 15L crickets in 3min. I think the only reason he was nice bc he was dehydrated? Or I’m the reptile whisperer. I’ve had a Argentine tegu for 3months and it’s amazing. I didn’t even need to train him. Cool video bro!🦎🐸🐢I love my jungle

    Awesome video, i also recommend giving your monitor a bowl of food, and rubbing it while its too busy eating. I could pick up my 6 inch monitor by the tail and make him do a handstand as long as his mouth could still reach the food

    Dope video. The knowledge is much appreciated. Luckily our savanna has been an angel to me. She bites and shits on my fiancee but loves me. She just crawls right up on my arm and falls asleep lolzzz. The trust gaining couldn't have gone easier really.

    Good video. We adopted a larger older sav and he was surprisingly tame. He actually acted more like a dog in that he would follow me around outside and cuddle up for naps. I cant say for sure but i think they are capable of getting somewhat attached to certain people. Not just food food driven desires.

    • @KompositionB

      I believe this to be true. I also believe that we are just getting started with what reptiles are capable of as a companion. Yes they take work, but so do human children. Give a few decades and were going to see amazing strides with reptile relationships. Dogs and cats got a head start due to them looking all cuddly and what not, but not all of us want this super easy thing where a furrball absolutely needs you and worships you right off the bat. Some of us want to earn respect of an apex predator like a monitor because its a challenge but very achievable. With proper husbandry they can live twice the lifespan of any dog or cat. Granted they arent as hardy of a winter animal as a mammals tend to be but thats also part of the challenge.

    I got an 8 year old savanna monitor. Previous owner made no attempt to tame her down so she is really not a fan of people and ascociates anything going in with food and lunges forward. She tailwhips the glass when I walk by her. I am going to try and bathe her at the end of the week (Wearing a leather jacket and Biker gloves) but she will surely make it as hard as she can

    My baby savannah (3 months old) hasn't eaten for about 3 weeks now. What do i need to do?
    basking 110-130. ambient 85-90. cool 75-80. Substrate repti bark 5 in deep (used to be cypress mulch and coconut fiber but was told those could be toxic to it and other reptiles)
    feed it crickets, dubias, meal worms, even 1 mouse, premium dog food and tried dusting w/calcium and also syringe feeding. Refuses every food i've tried.
    in a 40 gallon tank rn, getting a larger one (i know it should not be in a tank, I have towels wrapped around it at all times to help it feel secure, my new enclosure is an Animal Plastics enclosure that will be much larger). it has 4 hides and a water dish changed every other day with spring water. It is shedding.
    It has become very lethargic and is usually in its favorite hide all day. I put socks of mine in for learning my scent. I don't handle it unless syringe feeding ( done that 3 times now.) I don't know what to do. Can anyone help me?

      @@strikersreptiles2891 awesome I've had mine for 2 months now ive got him to eat of tongues but I don't really know whats the next move as far as getting him used to me

    • @strikersreptiles2891
      @strikersreptiles2891  5 років тому +1

      Scales13 really depends on the age and individual animal. Monitors generally get more confident as they grow older and larger. Babies, and to a certain extent, female monitors will be shyer and flightier just due to a sort of instinctual awareness that they are more vulnerable to predators. Especially in certain species where males can easily weigh 100% more than a female counterpart. That being said, if he’s eating from tongs confidently, I’d suggest you try holding the food in tongs, over an outstretched hand to see if he’ll walk into your hand to retrieve the food. Watch your fingers though! You don’t want a mistaken feeding response. You can also try petting him while he has a mouthful of food. That seemed essential in getting our Sav used to our hands. She was so pre-occupied that she allowed some pets to occur.

    My hatchling was brought from a reputable breeder, on his display room, he is the only active so i choose him, but when i put him in his new enclosure, he doesn't eat for 2 days..

    • @strikersreptiles2891
      @strikersreptiles2891  5 років тому

      Not sure I understand.. he eats in his old enclosure but now after 2 days in his new one he won’t eat? He might just need time to adjust.

    • @chrisdizon1697
      @chrisdizon1697 5 років тому

      i asked thru fb chat the owner, and told me that "they" eat grasshopper and s.worm, he doesn't mention about the one that i bough. adapting? well thats my first thought, this is my first time having a monitor lizard. how many days a hatching(5 inches, not sure if he's a hatchling) can go through without eating.

    • @strikersreptiles2891
      @strikersreptiles2891  5 років тому

      Chris Dizon hatchlings shouldn’t go super long without any food. If he doesn’t start eating for you soon I’d say schedule a vet visit. In the meantime make sure your temps and humidity are on point. 135+ degree basking spot, 80 degree ambient cool side, 100 degree ambient warm side, 60+% humidity, plenty of hiding options.

    • @chrisdizon1697
      @chrisdizon1697 5 років тому +1

    Ok but then Kevin from N.E.R.D.said u should do the hands on approach watch his vids he starts handling all his monitors days after they hatch and they breed the tamest monitors...my auntie got a black dragon baby from them and it never bit once..comes right to her when she open door ...so hands on or hands off which one is it.....

    • @strikersreptiles2891
      @strikersreptiles2891  5 років тому +2

      Jimmie Parker depends on the species. Maybe CBB water monitors and some other species that approach can work but with imported Savannahs you can’t handle them from day one. Kevin did not succeed in breeding Savannahs either, and has not posted a follow up on his Savs in years. I have a great deal of respect for him but when it comes to handling monitors I suppose we have two different ways of doing things.

    Nice video, very helpful! But just to be a pedant...you shouldn’t punish a dog either. Usually makes things worse. Positive reinforcement is a far more effective training tool

    • @strikersreptiles2891
