Beekeeping - a weak hive turned into...? Surprised how fast bees can actually build comb!

  • Two swarms were captured in the trees in our front yard early this season (October/November in Australia). We had a pretty strong gut feeling that the bees were from our hives so we were quick to capture them and re-home them into nucleus hives.
The swarming left smaller sized colonies behind in the original hives and due to a run of un-seasonally wet weeks caused the new queen, we believe, to not return from her mating flight.

This is the same hive another 2 weeks later if you're following the story.
This was filmed on the 5th March 2023, which is the beginning of Autumn in Australia. The hives are located in an area where there are a lot of Whitebox gum tree (Eucalyptus albens), which we assume are flowering profusely. The weather has been perfect - two weeks of 30+ degrees Celsius days since last inspection, with a tiny thunderstorm last night.

Thanks, how are your hives going this year?

It’s been a poor year for me. Spring was too cold and wet. Summer was ok. Autumn weather is here already and no nectar flow at the moment. Currently feeding sugar syrup to keep them raising brood. Very jealous of your honey flow! I would have put another honey super on your hive myself.

This is our first decent honey flow for around 3 years! We haven’t been able to extract up until now. I shouldn’t tell you that we extracted almost 30kg out of three hives yesterday…. 10 kilos for each year we missed out on. We do feel your pain though - better luck next year! We are in NE VIC.

It’s a pleasure to see those fat honey frames in your video. That’s what us beekeepers love to see. I’ll just sit tight and look forward to the next time I see that in my hives. I’m in the southeast SA.

If you didn't have the queen excluder I believe you could have at least another half deep box full of brood.
They definetely need another super. Why didn't you check for swarm cells? They look ready to start preperation to swarm, I would split that colony if I was sure that there is enough time and nectar-pollen flow. They built comb on the top of the frames and they have many drone cells. Get some queen cells from that queen. She did a great job.

Thanks for the advice Chris, We do check for swarm cells every time we do a brood inspection. Probably just didn’t mention it.
