  • In this video, We discuss the issues of bad weather with early spring splits. We also install new queen cells into the colonies that had virgins. We did this due to the possible low drone populations, Freezing temperatures, Rain and windy conditions. We installed the new cells today and the forecast shows better mating conditions in the next few weeks. We also installed a cell into the queenless cell builder. We hope you find this video informative and helpful. We appreciate you watching and following along. Happy Beekeeping! ‪@MikeBarryBees‬ ‪@CastleHives‬ ‪@brucesbees‬ ‪@BeekeepingWithNatalee‬ ‪@NaturesImageFarmGregBurns‬

    What’s crazy is that you guys start so soon, like us, but your season seems to fly by. Yet you’re still getting frosts. It’s early and short. NC and SC have got to be ‘one-offs’. This is a really great series Craig. Keep up the good work.

      Yes! Early buildup then bad weather is generally expected, so it’s feed and monitor! Then the bees take off like a rocket. Our flow goes from end of march to about the first week of June. The. Dearth until late September. We have a decent pollen flow in the fall but very little nectar. I think we were a little ambitious starting so soon, but it will work out! Thanks for watching Mike!

    Thanks for sharing. Nice to see your approach with the queen cells and marginal virgins.

      Real beekeeping is unpredictable! We will always show the good and bad on our channel! We also don’t claim to be experts. We do well for our operation in our location. Way to many only show success. There are may failures in beekeeping. A lot of channels won’t even show a failure or questionable way of doing something. Some are trying to be beekeeping authorities. We are not. We just show how we do it and share what we do know and what works for us. Thanks for watching! We appreciate it!

    I’m sure you will have better chances when temperatures are up and drones are flying with your new cells. Thanks for the videos. Take care.

      They could have still gotten mates, but we had cells so I figured it would be better to use them instead of chancing it. Thanks for watching

    Ha Craig I live in Virginia we had the same weather here went into the 20 just killed everything, I had a massive amount of drone before the cold snap I found that my hives killed all the drones they were just pilled up in front of the hive I have never seen anything like it just mountains of dead bees. I had 7 hives with cells and they should be laying by the 31 of march I am enjoying your series. Looking forward to the next have a blessed week

      My guess would be as drones are expendable and usually located on the periphery of the combs, the bees clustered around the worker brood and the drones chilled. They were the. Removed by the bees??? That would be my thoughts. Thanks for watching. We appreciate it.

    I don’t like you anymore! 😩🤣Just kidding but I can’t watch when my husband has to pinch a queen!!I have even shed a tear before when it was a queen we had for 2 years and she did a great job and then fizzled out! I am just such a softy! Great video Craig! So appreciate you taking time to share your techniques with us! And the spitting doesn’t bother us! You do you…💞💕💕💞

    It good to see a update on this study or adventure . Ya we have had some off an on bad weather also an just had three new queens to hatch out this week not real sure how they are going to turn out . Real odd that yard has bucket loads of drones in all the colony’s but my other yard has very few so far I have not saw but a few flying it looks like they are all staying in eating . Thanks for doing what you do an you being you !!. THANKS

      Thanks Kathy! We are seeing the same in our yards! We probably got a little ambitious and started too early, but that’s how we do sometimes. It’s always a learning experience. The new cells should emerge today or tomorrow. We will see how it goes. Thanks for watching!

    We’re getting +5C in the day and -10C at night still. They’re just starting to fly around a bit. Alberta, Canada

      Hopefully you will get an early spring and have a great season. When is your main flow? April?

      @@thesidelinebeekeeper-craig6924 yeah the first plant to bloom would probably be the dandelion, and that’s mid to late April for sure. Our weather can be so unpredictable and volatile, that it’s tough to gauge it

    Any thoughts about adding a partial frame of young brood into those hives? With no brood pheromones they may knock off the young mated queen after she starts laying sometimes. Just a thought.

    • @thesidelinebeekeeper-craig6924
      @thesidelinebeekeeper-craig6924  Рік тому

      Hey Russell! We Will be adding some brood to them after she emerges! I don’t think they mated or had much of a chance. We started a little early I believe. But you are correct with the brood and your queen.

  • @woodlandharvesthoneycompanyllc

    Craig, I'm still waiting on the weather to improve so I can start the process of building up. Tomorrow it is supposed to be a high of around 60 and a low that night of 35 then dropping back off again for a couple of days. Not too bad but too cold to be pulling frames out. I have a couple of overwintered double stack nucs that I want in single 10 frames.Do you think it would be ok to do that tomorrow so that I will at least have that out of the way for later.

    Why don’t you edit out your spitting from the bee suit ,

    • @thesidelinebeekeeper-craig6924
      @thesidelinebeekeeper-craig6924  Рік тому +2

      Not much on editing! Not sure if I could if I tried! What you see is what you get most times. Didn’t figure anyone was bothered by it. But if it offends you I will try to remember not to spit on camera.
