You know, I remember reading an interview where Khorkina basically said, that years from now she'd still be talked about in the sport even though Patterson beat her here. She was not wrong, 2017 and who even remembers the name Patterson? Three olympics, three time AA world champion, two time olympic gold medalist on bars, eight moves named after her-Khorkina's mark on gymnastics was far stronger than Carly Patterson. Even with all that said, I don't think anyone can deny that in this competition, Carly did earn her gold, Khorkina's balance beam was not her best work. However, I don't think anyone can deny that Khorkina is still superior either.
She is remembered for her remarkable bars skills- Carly is remembered as the all around CHAMPION. Carly still comes up in conversation all the time, considering her dismount is still in use now. Not one of Khorkina’s bar moves even appears anymore, so that shows how much influence she still has there. Every great athlete is remembered in various ways, and demeaning one for another is an act of childish disrespect.
@@Anthony-lp1jnyou are simply personally biased against her. Your precious diva wasn’t at her best and was trounced by Carly. At least when Carly is mentioned it isn’t for her abismal sportsmanship and nasty attitude.
Carly is very much remembered as one of the very best. She helped bring the first ever team world title the year before and became the all around QUEEN of Athens. Svetlana is remembered for her bars work and for her incredible lack of sportsmanship. Not a legacy I’d want.
she's a legend. so tall that she had to make up moves but did not give up even though she was discouraged b/c she was 5'5". i remember her. she should have gotten a 10 at the 2000 games on uneven bars. she deserved it.
I could never understand why people said the Chinese girl should have been the gold medal winner- Svetlana stuck her dismount and looked absolutely effortless. What’s amazing is Nina Derwael is even taller and is now an Olympic bars champion too. She said once that this lady was her inspiration.
3wonka the difference is that a Komova is done from a stoop-through/piked stalder entry whereas the Khorkina is done from a clear hip entry. Hope that helps clears it up! :)
@moua64 If Carly continued, then she probably wouldn't have been able to walk a few years down the road, whereas Khorky's body clearly held up better over the years. Who knows? Maybe Carly could still be competing today if she didn't have those bulging disks in her back.
Isn't the stalder-Tkatchev called a Ricna? She fell on the khorkina transition in 96 and the Ricna in 00. But I still love Shannon as a commentator {I don't think they would have Tasha commentating on a comp wherein she was the alternate!}
She is an incredible gymnast. I just don't know how with those long legs being so tall that when swinging she didn't hit the low bar or her feet touch the floor!
Learning spacial awareness is how she didn’t. You learn exactly where to place your feet, where to position your legs to avoid that. Takes lots and lots of practice!
Well I am one of those fans who thinks she should have gotten a 9.6 on the vault, but this UB set was overscored. I would have given her a 9.6 here as well. She was out of verticle for many of her piroettes and over balanced alot of her handstands. Plus the stumble on the dismount...
I love seeing comments calling Nastia a legend and leaving a Legacy and such. Svetlana was on the international stage for 10 years. She has 8 moves named after her, at least one on every apparatus. She has 7 Olympic medals, 20 world, 20 European, and has world medalled on every apparatus including beam. She is a 3X World AA champion, the only woman to ever have done that. Now compare that to Carly or Nastia. And no, Nastia is not to be called a ballerina. Not with those broken body lines.
what do you mean there´s no competition? you said this era is about difficulty, if you ask me somebody that accomplish what korkina did in this era is even more impresive :o
Jhilton 70 Biles Is very robotic and unelegant like all moderns american gymnasts, please dont compare that robot with queen Khorkina, besides Korkhina won medals in every apparatus, Biles cant win nothing in bars, so dont try to demerize Korkhina.
Gonzalez Aramburu she’s not robotic, she actually has a very smooth dance moves on her apparatus. She’s not elegant like Khorkina, but gymnastics isn’t supposed to be all about elegance. Elegance does not equal artistic. And also, Biles has only been around for 4 years and it seems she’s far from retiring. She was 14th on bars at the Olympics, she could still improve on that event and contend for a medal. On another note, it’s not even fair to compare Khorkina and biles since they’ve accomplished entirely different things. Khorkina managed to establish her dominance over a long period of time, while Biles completely dominated an entire quad. It’s just qualitatively different
Don't try to downplay Carly's accomplishment. She's the 2004 Olympic AA champ. That's special. Yes, she didn't have a long career but that's not her fault. Nastia is truly legendary. She brought beauty and grace into gymnastics at a time where that was at its nadir and won a great many medals and fans. No matter what happened with her late comeback, she'll always be a legend.
Very true. Only two minors mistakes and her best would score higher than 9.725. Hilarious with the ridiculous scores Patterson and Nan Zhangzzz both got that anyone would be talking about Khorkina's scores which on vault and floor especialy were low.
Khorkina was scored based on her performance- which was highly lackluster. She should feel lucky to have even been on the podium. Her beam set wouldn’t have held up in a level 5 competition, let alone the Olympics. Her vault had sloppy form. Her bars were excellent- they were her trademark. Floor was severely lacking difficulty. Carly had a rough start on vault then rocked EVERY apparatus after. She earned her gold far more than this spoiled diva earned her silver. The bronze would have been a more appropriate one.
Let's be real...no one glorifies Carly or treats her like a goddess. Only year-round gym fans know who she is because she had about 3 minutes of fame post-2004.
Carly had a short career because of back problems. She is VERY much remembered in the sport as one of the best- team gold and all around silver in 2003, then the AA champion in 2004. The sport is so much more than this brat.
ya, i just get pissed off when people say "Oh she is the rightful all around champion" when she wasn't. It was amazing at her age getting a silver, and she had little hicups on other apparatus. So people need to hop off, and except the fact that she was a silver medalist, not a gold medalist.
just noticed that Sveta doesn't use grips of any kind, not the big kind like the Americans or the strings like the Romanians, just her bare hands with chalk
Svetlana has come back game after game and she has proven herself as one of the greatest gymnasts the world has. Carly may have won, but where is she now?
This had a very visible error in it too, which Carly didn’t. Her set was actually very clean. Khorkina shouldn’t have even medaled with her overall very lackluster performances. Her beam shouldn’t have even been 9.3- 9.1 to 9.2 at the most.
Carly was hit with the deduction for going out of bounds and the hop on her vault, as expected. Khorkina was deducted for her awful form in the air and the very low chest on landing. On bars, Carly cleanly hit her bars set while Khorkina had multiple off vertical pirouettes and a form break on her low bar transition. She also was given a grossly inflated score for her amateur hour beam set that should’ve been more along the lines of a 9.1-9.2. She received her score by reputation only, not for the quality of performance. Svetlana didn’t bring it when it mattered most and barely earned a silver.
Oh, she looks like under heroine :( What had been happened then? One-two years before she looked like a shining bulb! And here... So, no wonder she lost the Olympics...
+ilonasharayacom It is mostly due to her natural aging and her body type. In her last two years of competition, Khorkina was very open about how hard gymnastics had become on her body. By the time the 2003 worlds rolled around, she was pretty much all lean muscle as a result of her training. Not to mention, she competed until she was 25, and with three different code of points that she adapted to, so she was competing her hardest gymnastics the older she got.
1:42 “a gymnast who has absolutely nothing to prove except maybe to herself”-what great words!
A lot of people complain about the noise the uneven bars can make, but I always found this competition's bars uncomfortably quiet.
что бы понять насколько хорошо выступала Света надо смотреть всех!!!она просто молодец как быдто с брусьями родилась!!!

But nobody remembers her, Khorkina maybe dont won AA but she is the Queen, Patterson is just the simply gymnatic, not the DIVA !
khorkina may not be the best person but she is DEFINETLY remembered in the sport

Tall at 5'-5"? Wow I never realized how short these women were. Still they are awesome.
That's so beautiful, she do it perfect!
No grips! Wow.
Elliot Madar if she started training without grips at an early age, it’s very difficult to get used to it later.
It actually wasn’t too uncommon back then surprisingly.

did they have grips back then?

Her vault was low but her bars were high.
overscored due to her reputation, 9.7 with that mistake?!
Patterson who had garbage form and execution on bars and was out of only a 9.9 start value got almost a 9.6, so by comparision this makes sense.
