    An old-fashioned book haul, but with a Dutch twist. If there's one you think I should move to the top of my TBR, let me know! Hopefully I can do another Dutch literature check-in a few months from now. - Sanne

    I used to live in the Netherlands where I learnt Dutch, so now I try and read one Dutch book a year to keep it up. This is a very useful list for me, so thanks for putting it together!

    All of these sound so cool! I want to start a bookclub with my mother, cousin and aunt, in Dutch, so this is perfect!

    Wow, I'd love to read the book by Lotte Kok. I came across that play once doing research for my German degree. It was treated as a precursor to the Faustus legend.

    I recently read het tegenovergestelde van een mens, and I loved it! I look forward to seeing what you think of it. I also first saw it in the UK as a translated copy, how weird...

    Dutch book plots always sound so great! I need them all translated now haha. I understand some Afrikaans so my brain tried so hard to read the Dutch descriptions on GoodReads but just can’t quite make it

    For cli-fi: I really liked De lichtjaren by Jens Meijen :)
    Loads of people are reading and loving Lize Spit, but I read Het smelt and found it way too harrowing, so I don't think I'll be reading much more of hers...

      Ahh thank you! I have a proof copy of 'Het smelt' in English (and I am usually okay with reading quite heavy stuff), so might give that a go.

      Haha I feel a little bad whenever I discuss Dutch books on an English language channel, but I thought it would be interesting to try out for a change! I'll make sure that the next video also features some titles that have been translated.

    Hello, thank you for introducing Dutch literature. I am looking for a modern novel by a Dutch author (preferably female) in the genre of fiction, biography or magical realism. I like that it's conversational about people's experiences in life and human relationships, and that it flows simply and smoothly. My favorite author is Haruki Murakami. If you can suggest me a book or books with these characteristics, I would appreciate it🌱🌸

    Have you ever read anything by abdelkader benali? He's like the only Dutch contemporary author I sorta know about :'). He's a regular' colimnist' on the podcast ovt (onvoltooid verleden tijd) which is about history & the present. If you're interested in Dutch history and colonialism and stuff they have stuff about that regularly, and interesting docus and miniseries. Though they also have done boring-to-me bits sometimes :p. But most of the times it's interesting and I've learned a lot. They also have a book segment but only about history stuff.
    Eeh got a bit off track there. I think I'll check out het tegenovergestelde van een mens, sounds interesting!

    Are any of these books available in English? Most of them sound fantastic and I'd love to get them but I have no idea where to find them. Can you post links to English translations if any are available?

    • @booksandquills
      @booksandquills  Рік тому +2

      The only one available in English is 'The Opposite of a Person', but I posted a video about a year ago where I talk about a bunch of Dutch books that have been translated into English: ua-cam.com/video/YU5tgW8OaDA/v-deo.html Maybe there's something in there that you'd like! And if any of these get translated and I enjoy them, I'll make sure to give them a shout-out.

      Oh do you have some recommendations? The only thing I've ever read was We Zullen Niet Te Pletter Slaan by Nina Polak, but I have no idea if that is the kind of book you are thinking of. I quite liked it, though I read it before realising the extent of my queerness, so might hit different now haha. Would love to hear your favorites!
