    Just wanted to thank you for the review. I’ve never owned a pistol before, and I’ve been researching all kinds of pistols in order to make my first purchase. I’ve not fired a P30 yet, but have held one, and that ergonomic grip feels so comfortable, that I didn’t want to look at any others. I know a lot of guys make fun of the external safety, but to me it’s very important. I’m purchasing this pistol for home defense only. I have no intention of carrying so I think this model of P30 is perfect for me. I did not know about the trigger issue, but for me, and my purposes, I don’t think it’s deal breaker. Again, thanks for the review. It was very helpful, and only solidified my choice.

      There is no problem with the trigger. it's just different and people keep on comparing it to a competition gun trigger. The P30 is a military/police gun and you do not want a competition trigger on these. I personnaly love that it has some play and the feedback is very clear.

    I have more handguns than I could ever justify having, but the ones that I will never sell or trade away are my HK P30s. I have the P30-s and the P30sk-s. I do not mind them having a safety as that is the manual of arms that I spent most of my adult life learning and carrying with. I do want to get the P30L-s, but I do not think that it something that I can easily budget for as I have been purchasing and building on other projects. I have been married for 30 enjoyable years now and I would love to see that continue for another 30 years at least... That may not be the case (the enjoyable part) if I suddenly run out and buy another P30! Thank you for another informative video, and I am excited about seeing this project get built! Maybe after you are finished I can show it to my wife and let her see what it is that I want to build too.

    WOW! Yours is the most convincing review of the P30L. With a few descriptive words, based on high round count experience, you got me considering it in addition to the too many pistols i already have. Im desolving my metal CZ collection, a few Glocks, and now going back to building up my H&K family. I started way back in '75 with the VP70Z. Recently added VP9SK.
    But, back to your sober, mature presentation, Great !👍👍

    I purchased the same model, V3. One of my top 3 favorites. I solved the trigger problem by converting to the 4.1 LEM trigger, while retaining the decocker and safety lever. Without wanting to start a "safety/no/safety" flame war, I mention keeping both because it retains the decocker you like.
    As for the safety, I understand the reasons for not having one ; in my case I'm willing to accept the risk of knocking it on (I carry with the safety off), which I attempt to minimize with continuing training, because I want to have the option of having a safety during non-carry handling and not removing it solves the detent issue..

    Hey man. Thanks to you this was my first HK purchase 2 days ago and I am beyond thrilled. Paid a tiny bit more in order to find the V3 no safety but it was worth it. I’ve only owned cheap striker fired handguns and this is my first SA/DA. I was gonna get the grayguns trigger right off the bat but I feel like it’s not as bad as others claim and im keeping it stock. Maybe the newer production triggers are better? Your HK knowledge got me hooked and this will not be my last HK. Subscribed and thanks!

    • @navyman8903
      @navyman8903  7 років тому +3

      This is true. I will say going from the VP9 to the P30L back to back, you'll definitely notice it as I have in the past. But if you strictly run this gun, or the P30 series of guns at the same time, you don't short stroke the trigger. That said, the VP9 is starting to dominate my life, so I have to force myself to take other guns out to run them. I've got another video with this and the P30sk running back to back testing out my left hand shooting/ want to carry it left side AWIB and my primary where I carry it now at the 5 O'Clock position.

    • @PoeOutdoors
      @PoeOutdoors 7 років тому +1

      DevilDolphin I can see that for sure. My VP9 is already sitting at 850 rounds after a few weeks of ownership. It's hard to stop shooting it! When I get to 1,000 I will back off. I took my USP9c out last weekend and it took a couple mags to shoot the DA well because I've been shooting the VP9 so much. The DA probably would have been harder to adjust to if I didn't dry practice with it as much as I do. It's my home defense gun so I have it in my hands a lot. Vid coming soon on that setup, I think you will like it.

      It’s ironic too because accurate shooting requires practice and mastery of a smooth squeeze, not a pull. This trigger almost capitalizes on focusing on the squeeze. I’d honestly say it seems like a great pistol for beginning shooters

    Good points on the P30. That reset is nearly identical to the P2000 and P2000sk. When I first started with any of three guns, I didn't see any big difference - due to my lack of experience to know the "real" difference. But now that I've been working out on my 1-inch dot drills over the years, that reset really makes a difference. So I'm a little turned off on it whenever I do "precision" shots. But when I go fast, it's hardly noticeable. Overall it is still a good gun.

    • @navyman8903

      Agreed. I plan on buying more of them over the coming years.....but they're not hot items if that makes sense. I do like how robust they are for sure. Especially the P30L. I do miss and will soon replace my P30 for sure. Probably with an LEM model.

  • @alexh.4068

    Am I the only person that likes the trigger. The pull is smooth in both DA and SA and has a nice break. I don't find the DA to be too heavy at all. Doesn't need any mods at all. The safety lever is also fine for me and does not get in the way.

  • @chadwickwicky67
    @chadwickwicky67 5 років тому +2

    Awesome on the LEM choice!
    If you yet haven’t did or thought about it. A light trigger return spring and firing pin block spring works wonders on the trigger pull without at least in my experience not compromising reliability at all. Takeup buttery smooth to the wall and breaks more crisp and clean & to add icing to the cake, if you haven’t already , look into GrayGuns short reset kit, after I did that, it made a sweet all around trigger absolutely perfect!

    Yes, safeties significantly increase safety while moving with any firearm. I don't get why people always feel the need to shit on safeties like that. A lot of people love a single action first shot, and if a safety's going to slow you down with a pistol it will slow you down with an AR as well.

    • @celphalonred1999
      @celphalonred1999 3 місяці тому

      Saties can also get you killed, in most cases with criminals you only have a split second to draw and pull the trigger, you can easily forget you have the safety on or fumble to turn it off, it only takes 1 second for a life or death scenario. If you have kids, then hea a safety is nice. Otherwise...hell no.

    They come with flush 17 rounders now. Mine was $650 new. With $80 GrayGuns srt mod and $10 in lazy wolf and GrayGuns springs its a fuckin beaut to shoot.I'd like to notes even stock the trigger really comes alive. I use large sides and medium back and holy shit its easily the most accurate pistol I've ever owned.the safety allows 1911 style carry so I love it. Out of 27 pistols and 10 being full sized. And that I slides sig, smiths,Springfield xdm, 1911s, etc etc....actually my nodded Beretta I shoot as accurately but I've had crazy amount of experience with that in the field...same with a mark 23 and 1911...I'd argue the reset isn't too bad as follow ups are very accurate.... Again grayguns short reset trigger is equal to the 226 or 220 with srt. Easy as hell to install. You CAN install a lem v1 with GrayGuns trigger both srt and the awesome metal trigger just fyi. Did it for a mate....for $650 this cannot be beat

      I bought the P30L V3 (no S required in Ohio) three months after I bought the VP9 standard. They are a great pair. No need for LEM on the P30 considering I already have a striker-fired VP. They really compliment each other and the P30 is actually built a little nicer (hence the original high price tag only recently reduced) than the VP9.

So I asked my gun guy to see if he could order a pair, primary and backup, and he delivered. I'm done on my handgun purchasing journey, a pair of P30Ls will last you a lifetime. Oh, and the new HK tritium sights are PERFECT. 3 dots, blacked out rear, with a high viz front ring that the tritium phosporesces in the dark making that front ring in the just light up. Out of the box, perfect gun. Oh, and while my pair isn't consecutively serial numbered... They are 7 digits apart, and my lucky number is 7.

    I bought this gun and love it. So well made. I agonized between the VP9 because the trigger is that good. I went with the P-30L because it is harder to find and the slide and ergos are amazing. So now they came out with the B with a mag release button. That would have swayed me. Mine has no safety. Like that.

    This was my gateway gun into HK's. I absolutely love it. I need to get another p30, and an sk. Yes, the trigger kind of stinks, but once you shoot it for a while you hardly notice it. The HK team ran them really, really well a few years back. In my experience people worry too much about triggers and not enough about training. Great review, awesome gun.

    • @navyman8903
      @navyman8903  7 років тому +1

      You're spot on with the triggers, I've got a video coming up where I run the P30LS and the sk at the same time doing transitions. You can barely tell the trigger sucks once you run them for a bit. I also have to say, I'm not sure I shoot a gun flatter than the P30L when I hit my stride. At least as consistently. I might with practice. But there's something about the balance and smoothness of the P30L that is just easy to run out of the box. I don't know what it is. I wish the trigger was better for sure. But it's still a really solid gun. There will definitely be more P30 series guns in my future.

    Wow you rock yours. I bought mine a month ago and I’m getting better with it. I can reliably knock down the plates at 25 yards. I’m better with my striker guns but I’m catching up. I’m not crazy about the curved trigger. At first I was pulling my shots low at the rear of the pull before the break, but I caught it and am unlearning it. The gun is the best made polymer gun I have. The Steyr M9 is my favorite to shoot. Also excellent.

      I highly recommend the P30L, it's a great all around gun. I would also try to work in at some point a Surefire X300UB 1000 lumen flash light. But honestly when you get it, pick up some 124gr ammo when you go to break it in. The Nato pressure stuff works best. By winchester or MEN or one of those reliable ammo manufacturers. You'll love how smooth it fires 124 +p ammo. The trigger is very stiff when you first get it but it smooths out over time. Read a thread similar to my case on hkpro, but didn't find much to help me so would appreciate some advice.
    I live in a cold humid place with lots of outdoors, so HK's generous trigger guard helps a ton. I'm not too hot about striker fired or manual safeties. Currently have a USP Compact 40 v1, but thinking of switching to a P30 40 (not L). While I'm commited to .40 S&W I haven't sunk too much money (or time) on the platform. I don't mind either's battery of arms. USP rail is irrelevant.
    Planning on following your advice on two is one and finding THE one pistol. But the issue is I can't get hands on with a P30. Also getting spare anything here isn't convenient.
    I'm 5'3" and have small hands, even a buddy's HK45 gives me lots of trouble on trigger reach, and I predict the same would happen full size USPs. The USPc fits me better than Glocks and what-have-you. With that said, the questions:
    -1: How would you rate durability? I read the Todd Green torture test, but again, this is not going to be an exclusively IWB gun, and parts are a pain. Part of me is concerned with something like a muddy barrel.
    -2: Can you see the upswept part of the P30's mag release being an issue with gloves? It happened a few times with the HK45, but that thing is beefy. The standard USPc mag release is fine for me, but I might get the HK45c later.
    -3: I like DA/SA, but never tried LEM. How would you say they compare?
    Thanks for taking the time.

    Two things I beg to differ on. 1. The luminescent sights. From my experience when carrying in a holster, the front sight would receive little to no "charge" from light and the rear sights would still receive a little more or a charge, thus resulting in a jacked up sight picture making it much harder to pick up the front sight than the rear sights.
    2. I think a trigger on a standard P226 is smoother and has a nicer trigger pull than the P30. I'm agree with Colion Noir's point, for a gun in that price range it should have a much better trigger.

      That would be choice for sure. That SA reset can be a killer if you're not focusing on it the whole day. It is smooth though, and I think the silver lining is, the DA to SA transition is easier because of how crappy the trigger reset is. Which is a strange thing to say the least. The more I watch the footage of me running it, the more I see I can follow up a DA shot quickly with an SA shot. I'm not sure I can do that with any other gun with that speed and accuracy.

    Thank you for this video. I will wait for the VP9S. I love a thumb safety for the high thumbs grip, but "normal" HKs have the decocker built into the safety. I have handled this exact model of HK and thought the same thing of the trigger. My Apex, VP9, and Sig P226 w/ SRT spoil me.

    Thanks for the review. I'm thinking of getting a P30LS. My only reservation is if I will be comfortable or not with the thumb safety. I shoot 1911s with thumb forward style with the shooting hand thumb on top of the safety. Do you feel comfortable with this pistol's thumb safety? Do you think thumb on top of the safety while shooting a good idea for this pistol?

    • @philippott2784
      @philippott2784 6 років тому

      I got a HK 45 which I think is quite similiar in size to the P30LS. I have medium sized hands and I cant even really place my right thumb on the safety on the HK45, it rests well on the back/start side of my left thumb. My left thumb rests on the logo in front of the slide release. For reference, on a 1911 my right thumb rides ontop of the safey and rests on the same spot on my left thumb's back, with my left thumb forward at the slide release slot.

  • @rdizzo1313

    Does it hurt your thumb gripping it like that? I never seen a grip like that...

    • @dollarbillme
      @dollarbillme 7 років тому

      I think he and I use the same grip. My thumb rides and presses down on the safety while shooting, and my other thumb presses against the slide, usually on the take down lever as a "memory" spot. I love this grip and it works well with MP's w/ safety and 1911s. The normal HKs have the decocker in the safety and it causes issues for me. I love the grip style, I draw and press down on the safety while drawing. I have never "hurt" my thumb on the safety, but my support hand thumb has been cut riding against a 1911 slide before.

    • @navyman8903
      @navyman8903  7 років тому

      It doesn't. My thumb is at rest there, and it doesn't mess with it. I've found trying to point your thumb in an un-ergonomic way takes away from accuracy. I am locked up that way, and my stubby little WOP thumbs don't get too far in the way. I will say with the P320 I have to move it sometimes. Those forward serrations are serious business the way they're cut. But that's the only gun like that for me so far. Whatever helps me center punch the targets better.

    Hi DevilDoblin,
    I really like your videos.
    I'm going to start IPSC and are considering either the P30LS tactical or the USP 9mm tactical. If you only had these two guns to choose from which one would you recommend and why? Also, i'm a lefthanded shooter.

    • @navyman8903
      @navyman8903  7 років тому +1

      As a lefty and in general I would recommend the P30L 9mm in V1 (Light LEM) so you can use it to compete. The SA reset is a little sloppy, but everything else on the gun is perfect. It also shoots flat as hell. Great shooting gun, and it's damn near perfect. If the trigger was slightly better, everyone would own one.

    just bought one of these last month. i have about a hundred rounds through it with about 7 failures. using 115 gr. i’ve read you have to run 124 nato through it. currently letting it sit in my safe with the slide open and will try 124 gr ammo. can anyone verify this is likely the problem? the gun is clean and oiled well without over lubrication

    • @kspec6131
      @kspec6131 4 роки тому

      I had the exact same issue with my p30l when it was brand new. It just needed to be broken. I had a few failures to extract because I was running standard 115 grain. When I ran 124 grain it did not have one issue. After about 75 rounds of the 124 it broken. Now it will feed 115 grain with no issues at all. Although now I prefer 124 grain to the 115 grain. The manufacturer recommend 124 grain + P ammo. But it will chew through just about anything I run through it at this point with no problems.

Yes the triggers are heavy and the reset is a bit long, but with training solely on these HK formats i have developed excellent trigger control. • @navyman8903
      @navyman8903  7 років тому +2

      I have to carry the M11 on duty, the old school 13 round top extractor M11. Not the M11-A1. I don't have any other options, but when we switch over I'll be carrying the P320c. I wish I could carry my VP9 to be honest. But that's not in the cards. Off duty is a different story of course. And I had my time with the 40, I will say I could never find my preferred load with it like I could with the 9mm and 45acp. I don't bag on guys who run it, but I don't recommend it to people looking to get into a handgun and I don't use it personally.

When I put in a serious range day of 700-1000 rounds as I love to do, It takes a couple days for the discomfort to go away and get full dexterity back. It's a fact of life and a shame...my all time favorite round is 45LC followed by 45ACP. Adapt and survive my friend.. lol
