- Two mothers and their children had to sleep overnight at Mariner’s Point Park when temperatures were in the 50's, sometimes dipping into the 40's; leaving them wet, damp and cold.
The single mothers, Lisa and June, have been living in their cars with their two little boys. They said that they have been on a long waitlist trying to get access to affordable housing.
San Diego Police towed their cars on Friday evening; leaving them with nowhere else to go, but outside in the cold.

Yep. I was there. I must have been on dozens of "wait lists" before I realized it was just a placebo. In two years, I never heard back from ANYONE. Making the hundreds of phone calls for help, running into "I'm sorry, but all lines are busy...." when I did get through, they said there was help. But it never came. After a while I stopped calling and got....numb. People, you go into SHOCK when something like this happens. You lose your hope and faith. Bless all the others still out in the cold, waiting on help.......
I called and asked for help too but they only helped people with mental problems, drug problems. Or if I was military or gay. Nothing for a plain single white woman. It was ridiculous. I almost thought that I should have said I had any of those issues and pretend so I could have gotten any help. I just needed a very slight push in the right direction. It would have been very easy to have helped me. But no, nothing...

They're overwhelmed with requests for help I would imagine. The US needs to get the military involved in helping people like this. How many military bases are sitting abandoned that could be used to shelter people. They could offer job training and other services to help people like this to get back on their feet.

There’s this lady in ocean beach with her young daughter also got there car towed and it breaks my heart seeing them sleeping on the concrete by an elementary school or by the library.😢💔 it was just the lil girls birthday and i asked her what she wanted and i got it for her. Man there’s so many homeless kids out there sleeping in the cold weather

Then they were neighbors of mine. A co-worker before I lost my job got the same fate, all he HAD was his car. and they towed it with all his possessions in it. Four days later we were all on permanent layoff. for those who think homeless people are just lazy.....WAKE UP

You have no idea why anyone is in this type of situation, but can say with a high degree of certainty that it is very often not because "they have not figured out how to be adults". Many of the chronically homeless have mental health or substance abuse issues (or both as they are often linked), but many are also in a temporary pinch due to recently losing their employment and with a little assistance can recover. I hope you are never in a similar situation, but try walking in their shoes before you render judgement.
I feel so bad for them. Especially the poor kids. I hope someone gives them an RV or a van 🚐
But if you sleep in your parked car, the police fine you $100 dollars a night. I was months at my new job just trying to pay off fines so I could legally pay my registration again. They aren't helping!

How is this possible I see the same Sheet car or vans parked at my son preschool/ church ( public street ) for years, they leave trash around and all types of people hang out around them!!! Yet they never get towed!
The housing prices, rent prices need to match what the majority make in California. If you work 2 full time minimum wage jobs even $5 over minimum wage, you still cannot pay rent on a 1 bedroom, utilities, food and transportation. The cost of living is outrageous, outrageous before inflation happened. Yes they have section 8, hub but the waiting list is years. That’s if you have kids, single adults are not eligible for benefits. You have to be disabled and make less money. If you work 40 hrs a week minimum wage you make to much. The greed needs to stop in this country. Stop building single family homes worth millions. A lot of low income housing can be built on that land. Stop purchasing land you will never use. The rich by up so much land and do nothing with it. Just so no one can build next to them.
The housing crisis is ridiculous in San Diego and the county wants to pat itself on the back saying they provide, which is just a bunch of smoke and mirrors to hide the fact that there is a social cast going on in California. I've seen the homeless population rise drastically in the past few years and it's getting worse. People are living in their cars, and not just the addicted (which there is Litte help for, BTW - another smoke and mirrors game the county plays). I've seen more and more people sleeping in thier cars outside of their work, the elderly, the disabled, families with children etc. Its disgusting that they can't afford housing and yet they still contribute or have contributed, as in the case of the elderly, the disabled and our vets! The truth is, if you don't pay thousands of dollars, for million dollar homes in taxes, San Diego doesn't want you - you are not "human" enough for them. Damn shame. I hope these families find the help they need!

The children should be priority in the situation. There are many shelters in San Diego for children. It means separating them from their parents, but it’s the humane and compassionate way to handle this. Once the parents get back on their feet, then they can get their children back. Right now, the children provide the parent a shield from reality and they are using them to gain the system. Such incompetence being displayed by the city, county, and housing authority. 🙏💪🌏🌍🌎❤️🇺🇸🖖

Sorry for your situation! For them and all others, we can't be satisfied with where we are now. Even if we don't need it now, we need to listen to the news to help others and ourselves. We need to hear the process and resources of where to go next. Never put in just ONE (1) application and wait for them to call back, fill out MANY apps and go to them for results and see who calls back first. We need to train in different areas of life because tomorrow is not promised to any of us.
Circumstances beyond your control means unemployment, disability and divorce court and attorney should have stepped up. If we are living in our cars or on the street, we missed a step and should have asked family & friends for help. Let's keep praying 🙏.
