A fascinating viewpoint. There is no doubting the individuality and superiority of Stubbs as indeed a horse painter +, but one should also consider the freedom, or lack of, that he had with the instructions of the patron. To reveal the creative paintings of Stubbs is to release the free reign from the formulaic. Or indeed with my own studies on Stubbs and a key patron in the 2nd Marquess of Rockingham, the creative spur given by patron that allowed Stubbs to create Whistljacket, his Mares and foals study with unfigured background and other individually styled works he created while working for the Marquess. It is intriguing to think that unbeknownst to many patron, Stubbs is placing his creative thoughts on canvas when all the patron wanted was a picture of his latest winner! Thanks for the film 👍🙂
Hi Sam. Hi Jamie. Just found your site about Stubb’s Horses. Childhood memories of gift-book of different animals and their anatomies. Including Stubbs. This book was pretty daunting for 12 year old me. Seemed more like anatomy for a vet than a child who liked to draw.... For future episodes, I would like to suggest 2 topics I came across years and years ago. By scrutinizing old (either side of Stubb’s times) paintings, one topic was about animal portraits and the author’s goal was to find out if the breeds in the old images exist today. The other, was people portraits and discerning their varied maladies. Warts, lumps, droops, etc
Yes! Stubbs scene/composition reflects the compassionate relationship we humans share with horses/animals, together aware, even the beasts, as much as we can, of sameness with universe of parts dancing.
They talk about the necropsy from a modern perspective. Back in the day everyone was much closer to the harvest of their food, so getting hands on with the anatomy study was less grisly to them than it seems to us. I hope i said that in a fairly mundane way but still make sense??
Brillant! Thank you
Each video is such a treasure, thank you so much. I was hoping to find more music from Aran Browning but he appears to have vanished online!

Not bad for an artist of that time.
