Tim, a trick that the speed shop here said is to put a clamp in between the hose to keep the spring from moving. I had the same problem my self with the spring.
Love your channel bro! My brother used to street stock and my uncle Bob Bradford from Tomball, TX, he still roundeerounds. Anyway, if your car runs hot without the thermostat, put a restricter in it, or even knock the center out of an old thermostat, something to slow down the flow and let the radiator work. Keep on keeping on my friend.
Go to a place that sales hydraulic hoses. Get either the green stripe or red stripe. Yes, use a hydraulic hose for your top radiator hose, they’ll cut it to fit, whatever length you need. We’ve races for 43 years and have used hydraulic hose for the top radiator hose for the last 10 years
gmdexcool in grey gallon jug its a orange color antifreeze much better than the green. don't need anything else. use the number 2 restricter in your thermostat. good luck with your weekend.
Good luck tonight timmy, we have to back wash our radiator every race, i realize you had a hole, i heard good stuff about the your additive. We still run antifreeze, good luck
Tim you need a restriction washer where the thermostat went if your water flow is to fast it will still over heat. If you can you want as big as possible water pump pulley you got to slow the water flow down so it has time to cool otherwise you will have over heating issues for the water flow is to fast to allow the radiator to cool it down. When we ran our modified we had as small of pulley as possible on the crank and big as possible on the water pump fan shroud four core radiator and a restrictor in where the thermostat went and burned alcohol and never had over heating issues. I don't remember exactly but I think the restrictor had a 1 inch hole in it. Also we was told to never run a thermostat they can stick and cause overheating issues. By the way you will need something to put in front of the radiator to help the car warm up on cold starts when you get that thing to cool correctly.
Yep! We have the restrictor on the trailer and will be watching the temp. I have a block off for the front of the rad to get it up to temp, thanks for keeping me in line, y’all rally help this team out. Thank you!!

I was just about to comment this lol. Tim if you're not gonna run a thermostat make you a restrictor plate to put in there. Gotta slow that water down so it'll cool properly. Good luck this weekend.
I agree with you to a point, here’s my argument. I run a double pass radiator so basically I’m putting twice the restriction in the cooling system that I would with a single pass. I think that is enough restriction to properly cool the engine. Now, on the other hand if it isn’t I will definitely put a restrictor in it. Guess we will find out tonight!

I was always told antifreeze doesn’t help on cooling. We always run Napa cool in our stuff. The radiator hose with the spring made inside we order from motorstate.
We never used a thermostat but we did use a 5/8 hole restrictor in the thermostat housing because the water never had enough time to cool off in the radiator
Had the same problem with the hose in our latemodel. We drilled a small hole in the water inlets and hooked the wire through on each side then double clamped havent had a problem since. Could always use a braided hose
hey guys, you need to run a restrictor plate ,or you still get hot, if don't nothing it flow water to fast. anther thing is use pipe to shorten your hose, i get mine at speedway. and i use silicon hose. keep up the good work..

Tim water is all the same. If u still have overheating problems u might want to look at the size of the Pulleys and slow the system down or speed it up. And u might need to install a spacer where is the thermostat was with different size holes if you need to slow down the flow before changing pulleys.
On the radiator just get a 1. 1/2 piece of aluminum pipe that this is straight and just use a small piece hose to connect it to the radiator and outlet on the engine
you need to put a restrictor in place of the thermostat if you dont have a 5/8ths resistor the water moves through the system so fast it doesn't have time to cool properly
Also if u have to put Thermostat back in because after it gets up to temp and runs warm, instead of drilling holes in the nose drill like small holes in the thermostat itself
I used to use exhaust pipe for my bottom hose.... the bottom hose is the one that will suck together....also, put a 1 gallon overflow container on it...that way if it pushes water out, it will be able to suck water in. edited : You need some restriction in your gooseneck or the water will flow too much and not collect the heat out of the block. It will usually run hotter if u take the thermostat out cause the water will flow so fast it won't cool. I cut the valving out of the thermostat. But u can get different size washers to put in place of the thermostat
Hey, when you mentioned that you no longer run a thermostat in the cooling system it reminded me of a conversation my dad had with some wise old racers about over heating. They said they kept having over heating issues and so they took out the thermostat and got bigger and bigger radiators but nothing helped. Well they figured out that if they put a big washer in where the thermostat goes it slowed the coolant flow down enough that it stayed in the radiator longer to get cooled more and wasn't just rushing through so fast it wasn't getting cooled down enough before it went back into the engine. So if you still are having over heating issues, you may wanna try that, would be the cheapest thing you could do so far and it just may help.
We have an assortment of the washers you mentioned, I’ve had a lot of comments about them, so they’re on the trailer. Thank you very much for the advice!!
The spring is designed for the lower hose. The upper hose should never collapse unless your spinning the water pump backwards. Lower hose is suction side.
If you can't find that hose you can straighten out the ends of the wire spring and bend a hook, that hooks on the outside of the end of the hose, then double clamp (one clap over the wire hook), the other just on the hose. The hose will seal around the wire being double clamped. I've had a friend do this for years on his race cars and no issues.
Tim you and your guys remind me so much of when I was working on a NASCAR grassroots team as a tire/body/ anything anyone needed expert and general troublemaker for the other teams lol. I got paid in beer and fried chicken. You need to pay B in more beer and some damned good fried chicken then you may get that late-model soon.
They do make performance thermostat. I was gonna say in the last comment that they make performance coolant but looks like you found the secrete. Now go put that car in victory lane brother
7/8 restricter instead of the thermostat. Gotta slow that water down to cool in the radiator. At the track you can cut one out of the body aluminum and drill a hole that size. We found turning them motors 8-9 thousand that was the best size hole. Or gut the thermostat at least at the track . Got were I never had to look at temp gauge when racing, just on a caution. Good luck
Have you thought about going to the stainless steel upper hose? Also I had an issue keeping a race car cool and had an old man tell me to cut every other fin off the water pump to slow the flow to let the radiator have time to cool the water. It worked.
To get the hose with the wire made inside, more than likely you’ll have to visit a farming type store or a heavy equipment place. I had to replace the top hose on my bull dozer & got that type.
Take the valve off of the thermostat and just use the disk from the thermostat as a flow restrictor. If the water circulates through the radiator too quickly it will not shed enough heat and will boil over guaranteed.
When I used to race we would make up some washers the same OD as the thermostat housing and drill different size holes 5/8 , 3/4 , and 7/8 of a inch you need some restitution to slow down the flow so radiator can do work
I am sure it wouldn't hurt to put the entire bottle into the radiator. However, I would suspect that you have to drain the old coolant out of the block.

Also, race car drivers can't work on crate motors, due to rules, but open motors can be "claimed" ? (I go to a couple local tracks here in Iowa, who run IMCA. I don't know if that makes a difference)
Well when you see a black race track, that’s from the tires putting rubber down. At a certain point that rubber created grip, or becomes “rubbered up” that usually locks the track down to one lane. As racers, we look for the dark colored dirt or the dirt with moisture. Why? Well that’s traction!! Per the rules correct crate motors are sealed. Open motors can be claimed, yes but I’ve not personally seen it done around here.
Ahh okay, interesting! So is the black rubber "Slicked off" ? Because I hear that term sometimes too - And you run a crate motor (if i remember right) so you've got to have someone else repair it, or make changes to it then? Where as someone with an open motor can make changes to theirs (within the rules of course)
Beege Khaos yes when it’s black we call it dry slick. As we keep racing on it it will ”take rubber” you’ll hear a driver say, “ I found the rubber” that means a certain part of the track rubbered up and there was lots of traction because of it.
