KU's amazingly productive WEEKEND (conclusions based on Instagram stories)
    - yesterday shot at least 5 videos
    - had to reshoot 2 due to mic issues
    - edited 3, posted 2
    - changed channel banner/art 😉 Who noticed?
    - today shot at least 5 or 6 more (always several steps ahead)
    - read hundreds and hundreds of comments
    - posted several dozen of IG stories
    - found time for favorite books
    - fought traffic jam to reach home to continue work (DURING WEEKEND)
    - restless puppy Dongdong broke her leather sandals
How not to love her!! 💜💙❤️

I just recently decided to learn Korean as a third language and at the same time I stumble upon your channel. Instant fan.
Staying away from romanization is the greatest idea, I absolutely love it. Romanization always sound odd and confusing to me, I find it extremely inaccurate and misleading, so I want to learn Hangul first instead of stuffing my head with broken pronunciations.
Awesome work, keep it up, I'm binge watching all your content and can't wait for the rest of the alphabet to come out.

I like and agree with everything you said! I would like to add, inspired by your perfect 2:08, the "non-English" sound for the letter marked as "r"
2:08 That's the sound for the letter written as "r" I use natively. English "r" /ˈɑːr/ pronunciation forces your tongue to go to the back of the mouth, towards the throat, and somehow contracts, whereas for the type of the sound for "r" that is being used in some other languages, the tongue goes forward and to the palate, vibrates, flaps inside when air goes over it. You illustrated both great I think.
1st, ㄹ IS unique and should be treated as a separate character, with its corresponding way of pronunciation, no matter how we hear it or how it comes out in some moments. The ending ㄹ is indisputable and particularly well shows that!
I can mention some languages with the "non-English" 2:08, that sometimes resembles 'middle' ㄹ more, rather than the English variant. The most recognizable and seems majorly used to be compared to ㄹ, is Spanish rolled/trilled "r", as in words: carro, perro, tierra.. (GT is OK). Russian e.g. also has this 2:08, maybe not as expressive as Spanish. Appears like a single 'flap' vs. multiple for "rr". Try with: гитара, барабан, карандаш ( guitar, drum, pencil) listen to them at https : // en. openrussian. org (GT is not good)
Try also with Italian words: Roma, ragazzi, barbaro... (GT is OK) and you'll hear 2:08
ALSO, 잘해요, or 결혼하다.. depending on how fast these are pronounced, the behaviour of ㄹ and ㅎ changes. ㅎ disappears and ㄹ moves straight to the nearest vowel. It maybe comes down to how ㄹ looks to behave around other letters. It still touches its spot on the ridge. Right? Its placement in the mouth is maybe one of reasons for a sort of dual nature.
Confusion involving English "r" /ˈɑːr/ is unnecessary.
    I wanted to mention this. I didn't expect you'd say "r" (not "ㄹ") 2:08 in such way, like I do ;)
Sorry for writing it too long!!! Thank you for reading this! Hope I was clear and correct enough!!

I totally agree about the thing with Romanisation because in my case I was trying to think how some idol names would be written in hangul based on Romanisation and I realized that most of them are wrong for example you'd thing that hyunjin's name would be written 휸진 if you read it, cause you see the "u" but it's actually 현진 (actually pronounced hyonjin)so not only do we write it wrong we also pronounce it differently the same thing goes with taehyung (태형) and jungkook (정국)

Concerning the ㄹ problem. The people saying it sounds like an 'r' in 사랑해 don't mean the English 'r' but the 'r' people in Spain, Italy, or Russia etc. use - the rolled R. It might not be as strong as in the other languages but the movement of the tongue is quite similar, I would say...
Anyways, thank you for your effort shooting these videos! I really enjoy them 😊

    • @beccan.5876
      @beccan.5876 5 років тому +1

@@urdu_writes2022 I am not a linguist, so I cannot exactly tell you, but there are several rolled r sounds. The Korean ㄹ in 사랑해 is more a flap with the tongue (called alveolar flap), where you put your tongue on the alveolar (the ridge a few cm behind your upper front teeth) and just flap it down, thus making a sound kind of between r and l, with a tendency to r when you say it fast.
It is not a 'trilling' sound. Hope you understand what I mean.
However, that does not apply to all Korean words containing the ㄹ. Sometimes it does sound more like an L. So as Unnie said, you have to listen to the words from natives to get the exact pronunciation of it.
What I was trying to explain to Unnie was that people were always referring to a rolled r sound in 사랑해 and not to the typical English r sound... I think there lies the misunderstanding... Difficult to explain when you write it without hearing example sounds 😅

사랑해, is pronounced Sa(R+L)anghae. How does it sound? Try listening to how spanish "R" sound to anticipate how ㄹ sounds like, WITH LETTERS ㅏㅓㅗㅜ. Korean Unnie is right in a sense that she actually advises to listen a lot about pronunciation instead of using romantization. Yep, I dropped romantization for good.

Ohhh korean unni! I am a mom of 3, and after the past 5 years being dedicated to rearing and raising my kids I have carved out time to do something for myself, I chose to learn a second language, korean. I am so thankful for your videos. Even the money I spent on full proof language learning things arent as easy to follow and absorb as your videos. I know I've commented on every video of this alphabet series but I just want to say thank you, and I am thrilled to have found your channel. I've been practicing as much as I can. Do you have a playlist that will help me once the alphabet is done? Hoping I have a map of where to go once I have mastered the korean alphabet! Love from the United states 🤗❤🤗

as i am watching these videos, i’m realizing how inaccurate romanizations are, and i’m so glad i got the idea of how the korean alphabet sounds early on so that i only relied on it for about a week! you have had the best explanations and descriptions of how everything sounds. 언니 감사합니다!

I think the reason korean unnie wants us to stop relying on romanization is because we already have a 'standard'(??) on how roman letters sound. But the korean letters have their *own sound* . It's like when we were being taught as kids how the letter 's' is supposed to sound, we didn't really question why it sounded that way and just understood it was supposed to sound that way. when we compare the way we read romanization to the correct pronounciation, we get more confused and have a difficult time.....
TO SUMMARIZE, *JUST DROP ROMANIZATION*!!!! We just really need to learn the letters as if we were kids learning how to read and pronounce the korean alphabet for the first time without thinking of the roman letters... 🤘

i agree that romanization should only be used as a hint and not as a crutch but for instance ㄹ does sound like R when you're coming from the german language for example. it doesn't sound like the english R at all but for me it definitely sounds like a german R, much more so than an L.

About Romanization, I think you are Right! In my native language, the word 잭 ( chaek - book ) we would read like C ( a sound that don't excist in Korean, similar to ㅊ) ㅊㅎ아엑 - c h â é k !!

To the first question you said you got from listeners after the previous video, I think the problem people have is that the letters don’t sound like it does when you say them by themselves (more of an L/R sound). It ends up sounding like a D sound when it’s used in the word. It’s just difficult when the sounds we learn initially don’t sound the same when we actually say it. I only used romanization here to illustrate my point since I can’t demonstrate it over UA-cam 😂 The letter is one sound, and it seems like it’s hardly ever pronounced that way when it comes to speaking it. That’s all....it’s just been an adjustment lol
Your videos have helped me so much so thank you!!

I literally choked when you read 부자 with the b sound, because in piedmontese dialect means "get a move". Usually grandmas use it with grandchildren when they are lazy or sluggish! Btw, thanks for all these videos, I find them very helpful!
