9:20 hallelujah! I’ve been smoking a Sunday morning cigar, to the glory of God, as I prepare my Sunday school lessons for about 4 months now. It’s a grab way to start the day and get mentally prepared.
Wow, cheers to the stenographer! I had never heard this information before. As someone who transcribes audio for work, I can't imagine how difficult it must have been to do that 1) live, and 2) by hand! Aw, that poor, nameless soul worked SO hard. Well, Jesus watched every minute of that person's efforts and will grant them their proper reward on that Day. Spurgeon was only a year older than I am now. This is why I don't read many biographies. I already feel like a failure. Reading this stuff just depresses me more.
It is amazing, and thankfully, he had three taking notes, each sitting in a different section of the Tabernacle as he preached. He reviewed the 3 transcripts the morning after and then finalized what he wanted published.
Thanks for all your videos. I read Spurgeon often but would not want to compare myself to anyone. You either go on an unnecessary guilt trip or are filled with pride.
Thanks Matthew for another great video and l listened to the talk you gave on God and man. Like CHS l was converted at 15 in 1971. l remember reading hos autobiography which was wonderful. God bless you
Thank you brother Matt. Never commented on your channel before but just to let you know I truly appreciate your message at the end of the video. Love from Vietnam.
Pastor Matt, thank you so much for your UA-cam ministry and content!! Most days, I look forward to seeing a video from you, and I'm never disappointed in the content. According to your advice in a video you posted years ago, I decided to pick a dead mentor in the faith. Over the past three years, I've been wrestling and asking God about who I should study and my heart has been stirred recently to study Charles Spurgeon. So, I've been purchasing and reading every book about him and those he wrote, when I have free time from my Seminary readings. This video came at such a good time!
Thank you for the video, this encourages me to prioritize my schedule and produce more for God and spend time with family. Entertainment, hobbies, collecting have been a distraction from the important things.
I looked at coming to seminary at RPTS and even spoke with them on the phone a few times. I wish they had an all-online option. I know you lose out on a lot when unable to attend in person, but as a 34 year old husband and father of 3, it's not feasible for me at the moment. With the rise in the necessity of bi-vocational pastors and ministers, I wish more places would add the option for full online MDiv's. I live in the Akron area, so I plan to come visit one Lord's Day!
I'm grateful for men like Spurgeon, and the work they do. I am not wired that way. I love serving the Lord, and the church but I'm not a preacher, or public speaker of any account. Still my ministry, quiet and unassuming as it may be, requires it's own effort, skill and talent God did wire into me. I never think I'm doing enough, and I've come to know many, if not most, well known pastors who have done what seems like so much more than I, often feel the same.
Just keep close to the vine but using the means of grace, prayer and reading the word and The Lord will give you the strength of the Holy Spirit to enable you to live for him and spread His Word. If you're doing this, no need to worry about not soing enough.
Impressive, but is that busy for a pastor or for non cleric working day? Regular working people frequently back then and today had/have more arduous working weeks that what is outlined there.
Well if you take into account that preaching 1 hour is equivalent to 8 hours of work then I’d say it was a lot. I’m a bivocational pastor, work as a mechanic as well and I can tell you I am far more exhausted after preaching one sermon than after a full 9 hour day at the shop
Spurgeon is one of my heroes of the faith. 😊 Sadly he may have died prematurely in part because he burned himself out working so hard. As I once heard Don Carson say, (paraphrasing because I can't remember his exact words), sometimes it might be better not to go 100% in pastoral ministry (or at least for some seasons) if it means one can have many more productive years of service. Say, going at 80% for 20+ years rather than 110% and burn out after 10 years.
How interesting. I am 70, and I work part time as an accountant for a non-profit. I am trying to get more serious about my bible study. I do not manage my time effectively. Thank you for teaching me a new word today, "finitude."
Despite Susanna's health, she also had a book ministry (and I believe clothing ministry), and later in life, she planted a church, and I believe one of her twins became the pastor. So inspiring.
Currently at Answers in Genesis pastors/leaders conference. Would love to hear your take on young earth creation. If you’ve talked about it in the past and I missed it, my apologies.
Spurgeon had some very very serious mental and physical health problems that debilitated him and he was frequently absent from the pulpit because of his ilness. He took frequent trips to his vacation home in france on the beach to rest. He had severe depression and anxiety and gout.
No wonder, seeing what he went through with the most of the church leaving due to Darwin at that time and the mockery spurgeon was facing, even the time someone faked a fire and the stamped that happened at one of the buildings he preached at with a few deaths due to that. That takes a mental tool on someone! I preach at a homeless shelter almost every Sunday and I do youth every Saturday, and that alone puts a mental tole on me
@WilliamHardacre-e5x That's the price to pay that works up the enemy. No movement from the accuser. Means your not advancing the Kingdom. You my friend are!! Onward and Upward my brother in arms!!
Other thing is that he didn't have all the information which shows the correlation between physical health and mental health. So, obviously if he would have do frequent exercise and having a good diet he would've handle depression and anxiety better.
Spurgeon also dealt with his own ailments. He had gout and dealt with depression. A stampede were people were killed during a service and the "Downgrade Controversy" were major causes of his depression. He even wrote something about preaching through depression.
He makes me seem like a sloth. It takes me 10 to 12 hours to get one sermon ready. I’m just glad I don’t require much sleep. Thank you brother for your content.
Susannah had surgery after her Twains were born that was gynecological in nature. In her later years it eased up some. She was able after his death to see to it that a church was built.
The claim that, even though you didn't mentioned him by name, respecting and loving an amazing pastor for his preaching and dedication to the word of God amounts to "idolizing" him is misguided. That's pure Monday morning quarterbacking as well as caving in to slack-brained popular opinions. You were, and still are, in the same category in my mind as the not-mentioned-by-name fallen preacher. That doesn't mean that I'm idolizing you...or John MacArthur, James White, Douglas Wilson, or anyone. Rather it means that I love you for your dedication to preaching of the word of God and overall Christian integrity. Thus when ***BOOM*** such a pastor falls in shameful sin, it's simply dishonest to play the "you were idolizing him" card after the fact. Let's be careful not to be sucked in by sloppy popular thinking and kneejerk reactions. Peace, brother. We love you!

Psalm 33: "Praise the Lord with the harp. Make music to Him on the ten stringed lyre .. play skillfully .." When commenting on this Spurgeon said the instuments were "childish things" and "when Jesus gives us spiritual manhood, we can make melody without strings." ... Spurgeon fails to consider that it was the Spirit of Christ that co-wrote Psalm 33 (and many other Psalms that call for the playing of instruments)
Yes, but not in the temple/tabernacle. Also, Christians are called to New Testament worship, no OT worship. The veil was torn, yes, but the Holiness of God is not reduced, and the command to fear God not rescinded.

Please excuse my vague attempt at addressing Mr. Everhard. As a 20 year veteran of full time church ministry, I think he is towing a line that should be drawn out more. I do think this budding generation has an issue with grit and work ethic, so I understand the importance to stress of hard work. Spurgeon is a a high bar….but he also suffered with crippling anxiety and depression. Perhaps he needed to unwind a bit:) I am an introvert and spend my life ministering to people. I love it, but it drains me. For my own mental and emotional well being, I have found it life-giving to wrench on old trucks. In ministry there is always more to do. You rarely finish anything. Many young ministers in my presbytery unwind in Tolkien, Lewis and the like…Wonderful! However, some of them think their unwinding is more pious than mine as it’s more “godly” and ministry focused…I strongly disagree! Just my $0.02 from a fellow minister of the gospel…

I’ll stick with the apostle James, Therefore to him that knows to do good (not smoking), and does it not, to HIM it is sin! Maybe Spurgeon did not understand the horrible health benefits of smoking, but we that are alive in the 21st century certainly does.
