Grew up Presby. Many pics of Jesus on the walls and stained glass windows. Didn't overemphasise Psalms since there are 65 other books with great content.Sunday was not worshipped as a day. Jesus was worshipped everyday. Baptism of babies is mainly good for bringing un saved family members. If Presby only baptised the saved, they might be saddened to discover how few baptisms they performed. Let's major on what's most important guys. The Cross, the lost, The Holy Spirit, The Word of God
@sheilalangston7035 There's no ' 'counting' when it comes to Baptistism. Christ followers should be Baptised, but it's not a requirement for salvation.
I was born and raised in Baptist churches, and grew up singing the old hymns. One of the things that been driving me crazy is its getting really rare to find Baptist churches in my area that still even USE the hymns. They use the contemporary worship songs, that you sing for a few years, then forget them. I cant even rememost of the songs i sang 10 years ago, but i can still remember the old hymns like "The old rugged cross", "Trust and Obey" "When i survey the wondrous cross" and many others. Most of the old hymns held biblical truths, while most of the "worship" songs is more emotional based.
The old hymns are so meaningful and I love hearing my fellow believers voices in praise and worship. So tired of the rock style performances on the alters where you can only hear the band and loud singers, like a rock concert. True worship is in reverence and awe of a Holy God🙏🏻
I grew up attending a Baptist church, accepted Christ Jesus in Sunday school and was baptized at 10 years old. I am in my eighties now but still remember that time in my life vividly. Best decision I ever made. My eternal salvation means everything to me. I cannot find a church that uses the old Broadman hymnal and I truly miss the songs that I learned as a child and still sing today in my home. I love our Lord and savior and hope that many of you do as well.
I cannot love this comment enough. My family attended a Charismatic church for quite some time and they played only contemporary songs with a loud band. They’d turn off the lights and turn on fog machines and black lights. I asked them if they’d perform my favorite hymn “Victory in Jesus,” and I was told it doesn’t fit their style, and also that don’t know the sheet music for it. 🤦🏾
Performance religion exists all over the world. "Stroll with God," "Rock with Jesus," "You, too, come along with us," and "Over the water and through the woods, to Jesus' house we go...."
@@Leilah99 How sad! I am in my eighties as well and am NOT going to Church anymore MAINLY because of the music becoming NOTHING MORE THAN ROCK BANDS. The singing is monotone with no melody, harmony or sensible rhythm which is the basis of REAL MUSIC!
Many Presbyterian hymns come straight from the Psalms. Look closely at your hymnals, there will be notes showing which Psalms you are actually singing.
I as an Episcopalian who strongly adheres to Lutheran doctrine, will avoid going to commercial establishments on the Lord's Day to minimize the work store employees have to do. If all Christians could avoid going to commercial establishments on the Lord's day store employees could stay home to go to church to worship the Lord and to be with their families.
I was a member, Deacon and Elder of the Presbyterian Church. I took my family out of it around 10 years ago: our pastor never indicated he accepted Jesus as his Saviour, never made an alter call and when I asked him a question about the Bible, he told me it was just a collection of tribal tales. Next, they ordained homosexuals and approved of same sex marriage. Then they brought a Muslim in to teach us that we all worship the same god, Allah is not god!
I attend a PCA church in Sumter SC. I came from a charismatic/ Pentecostal background.. Watching the service was so refreshing how Gods word was being handled. Have been attending since 2015 and my wife and I have been blessed.p
You have to be careful with the PCA. Some of them are into the Revoice movement, which is pushing "celibate" homosexual men as teaching elders. The Federal Vision is another problem. I spent 10 years in the Assemblies of God. I"m also a Presbyterian now. I live in Lexington, SC. I had to stop attending the PCA here in Lexington because the pastor is pushing the Revoice heresy.
@@jumperstartful yes I believe God initiates the salvation process by taking a heart that’s as scripture declares is wicked and is His enemy, and replaces it with heart of flesh that responds to the Gospel. No one when will tell Christ, hey Lord I chose you. We all will fall on our face and sing “worthy is the Lamb”.
I enjoyed your presentation. I was partially raised in the Presbyterian church. My family had moved frequently and we went to several different denominations, according to what was near and convenient. For several years we attended the Presbyterian church and I did find Christ as Lord and Savior there. I was baptized there by sprinkling. I had a lot of Baptist friends and they had a lot of skepticism about my faith. But I persevered. I did understand the "singing of the psalms". Glory! Can I shout? But I did have difficulty with the Five Points of Calvinism. In the providence of God, I did end up in the Church of the Nazarene, where I was called to pastoral ministry, which I followed for 50 years. Even for the few differences of understanding and trying to explain God's great calling and salvation, I did often thank God for my roots in the Presbyterian church. Thank you for a calm, reasoned explanation of the Presbyterians.
You were born again. At your baptism I baptise you in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit. There you go. Once out of your mom once under the water.
When you are baptized I pretty sure the amount of water that hits you is not that important. In the Catholic Church the person has water poured over there head we don t sprinkle . Your wet by the time it's complete. And there isn t a steadfast rule you have to be fully immersed to be considered a baptism. The full immersion thing I believe came from the Baptists.. but it is not nessesary. What is nessesary is . The person must say I baptise you in the name of the father and the son and the holy spirit. To say I baptise you in the name of God. This is not a valid baptism.
@@hayeslincoln3111 Why be so afraid of submersion. Jesus Christ was submerged by John the Baptist. The objective is to "wash away sins." you cannot wash with a sprinkle or pour some water over you. You want to be cleansed of sins or not? Why be skittish?
3 years ago I joined a PCA Pres church and have never looked back. Truth is preached through the Holy Scriptures. The worship truly honors the Lord. Thanks for sharing.

Being Catholic the image of Christ on the cross reminds me of what Christ did for me. I don’t worship the image or the cross. When I kneel in church, looking at the crucifix reminds me, helps me focus on God’s mercy. We sing the psalms too. Love singing them. We baptize babies too. We hold the Lords day sacred and honor it. Only time we miss ( at least for me), is if I am sick. We are saved by Grace, but good works are a product of our salvation by Grace. We are not saved by works.

@@trudyfriedrich7416 Thank you so much, Trudy. I've been around a long time and have never heard about that. Oddly enough, the only thing that I ever heard was that Presbyterians were the rich Protestants, the ones with money.
As someone from a non-denominational, baptistic type church I appreciate your explanations of these "strange" things you believe. And although I don't follow most of them I love learning what other brothers and sisters believe. One thing I've come around to is the keeping of the Sabbath. I was always taught, and still believe, that it's no longer a "must" for believers under grace. However, I've come to acknowledge it as a blessing rather than a commandment. I "get" to keep the Sabbath rather than I "have" to keep it. It was made for Man, after all! Blessings to you. ❤️
@@tuniabjc9659 good question. I was watching the video and he mentioned "the lord's day". Everytime I hear that, they are talking about the first day of the week, the day the Roman catholic church transferred from the seventh day. They did this under their own authority. Since they are not honoring our Creator on the day He sanctified at the beginning of creation and calling the sabbath of the beast the lord's day speaks volumes.
@@tuniabjc9659 Let the Bible tell us: “God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it”(Genesis 2:3) I can't find any place in the Bible that says it's Sunday, or that we get to pick any day we want (9:30)
The original Greek word for baptism is a word for immersion. This is what occurred with Christ and that ,for me, is the example to follow. It signifies raising to life, from death to life. Also, I was raised with the belief that a person must be the age of accountability, to know right from wrong. Babies don't have the ability to choose.
Presbyterians don't believe that eternal salvation comes through water baptism. It's by grace that you are saved. Water baptism is a sign that you have been covenanted with the visible church. Baptism is the New Covenant version of the Old Covenant circumcision.
I took Greek in College for two semesters. I remember the Greek professor saying that the Greek word for baptism like most Greek words has MORE than one meaning. It's the same in English. Pick up any dictionary and look up a word and you will see SEVERAL possible meanings!! Also, MOST EVERYTHING in the Old Testament was done by SPRINKLING, EVEN PEOPLE. Get a concordance and look up the word SPRINKLE, SPRINKLING! And does it make sense that all those people coming to the Jordan River were immersed? I don't see any pictures of them carrying extra clothes to change and where would they change and then to walk a GREAT DISTANCE back home! I don't think so!! John Wesley didn't think so either!!
My understanding has always been that infant baptism serves a different purpose. It is meant to symbolize that the caregivers will raise that child in the Christian faith. One's own decision comes at confirmation.
@@davezwick5539Jesus was baptized at 30. But where does the Bible talk about confirmation? Methodists have baptism for any age. Usually baby's. But when a person old enough to reason, they are baptized, with confirmation immediately following straight away. I can't understand this.
Check out their TULIP acronym to see what that means. He forgot to mention all that. All presbyterians are followers of John Calvin. Jesus only died for the elect. God created some people for hell. Look into it.
Make note that the Evangelical Presbyterian Church split off from the Presbyterian Church USA, over doctrinal issues concerning the truth of Scripture. See Mark 7:7 for Jesus‘s words about which doctrines we should believe in.
The PCA ordains alleged "celibate" homosexual men as teaching elders or pastors. This is the sort of compromise that results from the semi-Calvinist doctrine of the three points of common grace. As far as I can tell, the EPC also believes in common grace. There is no biblical evidence that anyone is born a homosexual with an inborn sexual orientation. There is plenty of evidence in the Bible that original sin causes the abomination of homosexuality. @@bravehome4276

Interesting - I was brought up in a Free Presbyterian Church. We dedicate our children to the church but baptism only happens when an individual is of an understanding age, born again and it is initiated of their own volition - a person will give their testimony and then be immersed 🤔 Thank you for sharing! The rest is exactly how I practiced at church
The Free Presbyterian Church is a baptist church for all practical purposes. It's very hard to find one that baptizes infants. If I wanted to attend a Reformed Baptist church I would just find one of those.
So do you think Jesus turned away parents that wanted their babies baptise. I dought it. Look to where this tradition comes from . You will find it is someone's interpretation of a scripture passage. But the scriptural passage will be based on the conversation of that time . Taken out of text. That is the problem with Sola scriptoria. I can make a case for anything if I pick and choose what I want to see in Scripture. Read this book and follow your traditions. Those traditions come from the original church. That church is the Catholic Church.
The problem with the Romanist view is that you cannot question the authority of men who invent traditions out of thin air. Some matters are matters of adiaphora or indifference. Baptism of infants is one of those matters. But the Protestants are united on their opposition to the Roman Catholic Church. Presbyterians base their doctrine of paedo-baptism on the Scriptures. In the Old Testament the covenant sign was the circumcism of male infants after 8 days. The New Testament sign is the baptism of both male and female infants by sprinkling. You can't make a case for anything from the Bible. The Bible is very specific, while the traditions of men change from one decade to the next. @@hayeslincoln3111
Water baptism is a meaningless ritual. John the baptist even said so himself. Jesus baptized no one in water for a reason. He brought a different, and only meaningful baptism. A baptism of fire, not water. PAUL EVEN REGRETTED DOING IT.
i've attended a local Presbyterian church many times and I have never one time heard the pastors mention the words, "New Birth" or , being Saved, instead, it's like Bible study for people who are already saved. If you didn't know the Lord personally, you could go to that church for 50 years and still not know him, then die and go to Hell because no one there ever mentioned that you must be BORN AGAIN!
A new believer would have to talk to someone there to learn more, seek and you will find I still believe the pastor should acknowledge that, it's sad many churches do not

I am Baptist. Sunday, I attended a PCA church. I was brought to tears. The sermon dealt with election which I affirm. They are Reformed and Calvinistic which has become a bad word in Baptist churches. From the call to worship to the benediction, the worship was completely God centered. I’ve been living in a very dry place.
As a lifelong Presbyterian, this was fantastic. Many things I didn't know, especially about singing the Psalms. Every Presbyterian needs to watch the compact but very informative presentation. Thank you, Matthew!!
I grew up in the Christian Reformed Church, was baptized, and made profession of faith as an adult. I transferred membership to a Presbyterian Church many years later as I had moved and it was a local church. I was welcomed and the change was seamless. Only real difference was learning about the Westminister Confession whereas I had learned the Heidelberg Catechism.
Most Presbyterians would say, no, re-baptism is not necessary. If someone thinks their parents were flippant or superstitious when they “had the kid done”, they may wish to do it for themselves. My brother did because it was *his* own decision although our parents did their best, I did not because my parents had fulfilled the vows they made to bring me up “in the nurture and admonition of the faith” & I’d have thought it a huge insult to them if I had. Thanks for the gracious & thoughtful explanation. There are faithful Presbyterian congregations which are more lenient with Psalms & Sabbath-keeping, but they certainly would not argue with you. And a lot of us struggle with how predestination and free will can both be true, but for the moment we admit the tension & leave it up to God to work it out. After all, if we understood Him, He would be just human, not God. (I think it has something to do with eternity & time….)
Hi Pastor Everhard. Just finished watching this video. Liked it a lot. I was raised as Presbyterian but hadn't come across the predestination part until it hit me in my own personal reading.
My grandparents were Presbyterians, my father didn’t really take us to church but taught us the basics, and I now attend a nondenom pretty conservative Bible church. I help in the kids program and cannot bring myself to have coloring pages of Jesus or the Father! It must be the grandparents kicking in. There are some in my church who don’t think it’s a big deal but I just can’t do it! I remember as a child someone mentioning how the Muslims don’t depict their God and my father said “neither should we!” And it has stuck with me in a big way!
Thank you so much! Very interesting. As someone who has been a Baptist and a Methodist, I relate to each point. But we’re all going to spend eternity together, we can just accept each other. I agree with most of it anyway.
Thank you for your calm demeanor in explaining this. As a non-denominational evangelical that is looking for a new church home, I appreciate knowing this. Respectfully this is not a denomination that we would be comfortable with or will be checking out. Thank you again for your time and honesty. God bless you and your ministry.
Very interesting. As a confessional Lutheran, I would be quite comfortable with these “odd” practices of Presbyterian service. However, we are in disagreement with our Presbyterian brothers when it comes to Calvinism. I don’t see it as a salvation issue. I’m sure I’ll be meeting many fine Presbyterians, Methodists, Catholics, and Baptists when I am in Heaven. 😊

Pastor Everhard, I have been a Presbyterian since 1958. I have attended Presbyterian churches in Pennsylvania, Virginia, South Carolina and two cities in California. I have served as an Deacon, Elder and member of Presbytery. All followed the Westminster COF ,of which I am very familiar. However, not one of those churches were anything like you described in this video. All used the conventional hymns with hymns by Luther and others. Baptisms were observed and Predestination was preached but Sunday was a day for the family to be together and participate in activities together, such as playing games in the yard or doing things with neighbors, And all had stained glass windows with the images of Christ in them. I think your church may be a bit Puritanical in nature.
I totally agree. He was a converted Presbyterian and his church or denomination is not a mainline church. Nothing that he said made sense. It sounds puritanical as well as not really Reformed. I have been n this world longer than him 60 years on this earth. Raised in this and confirmed and went thru Catechism before being confirmed. I just cannot even grasp anyting he is saying. First we had many stained glass windows with Christ face, his resurrection, crucifixion, on the Mount of Olives, in Gethsamane, our ministers wore robs and vestments, we had a liturgy, we did not use the term being saved" which was against reformed theology quite frankly. And about missionaries, there was never a push there due to the belief in predestination. Many of these things he is talking about does not sound like Traditional Presbyterian or the Church of Scotland teaching. Sounds like some kind of puritan take and some hyper evangelical beliefs. I agree with you, its obvious to us that were raised Presbyterian. I have questioned him before, but he keeps taking down the questions, concerns and comments. Wonder why?
I was brought up in Scotland as a Wee Free Presbyterian. I now live in the US with my husband who is Baptist and the first time that I attended a Service in that church I was astounded at the clapping, guitar playing etc. Yes, Presbyterians are different!
Some Presbyterian churches are into the church growth model of worship, but this is a violation of the regulative principle of worship and undermines biblical worship and sound exegetical preaching. It emphasizes emotionalism rather than an intellectual understanding of God's written word. 2 Peter 3:18. 2 Timothy 3:15-17.
Thank you Matthew Everhard for that concise information. It’s something I’d wondered about since recently discovering, and being much blessed by, the late R C Sproul’s teaching.
As a Staff Elder (Associate Pastor, Worship and Visitation) in a Baptist Church, I openly say I can make a stronger argument for infant baptism in a covenant context than for baptizing very young children in a credo baptist context. Premature baptism in the latter setting ironically becomes a false assurance of salvation for adults displaying no evidence of regeneration because “I would not have been baptized if I were not saved.” I do hold to believer baptism, but counsel parents against prompting young children to be baptized. Bar mitzvah age seems an appropriate timeframe, announcing the candidate as a son/daughter of the new covenant. We do not use theatrical lights, lasers or atmospheric effects, but we do employ a diverse team of musicians including orchestral and rhythm instruments… as many skilled musicians as the Lord has added to our assembly. Oh, and we do sing the psalms as well. (And absolutely nothing from Hillsong, Bethel, or the like.) We also affirm and teach the doctrines of grace. And we have elders… Yeah, you’ve got us. We’re pretty much Pres-bap-terians. 🤣
Is that a Thompson chain I see there? Looking forward to this video? I'm currently Baptist but your videos have had an effect on me and I'm becoming reformed.

I come from a Bible believing church. What I understand from scripture... 1. God predestined all who hear the gospel and choose to receive Jesus Christ as their savior. As a result, those who reject him go to hell but it didn't have to be that way because God calls everyone to repent and believe on Him. So there are people in hell today because they rejected him but they could have been saved had they obeyed God's call. 2. The only new testament water baptism taught in scripture is emersion so you are breaking from scripture there by pouring and by adding child baptism. 3. The Bible doesn't command only songs to be sung to be Psalms. We can certainly sing praise and worship hymns and songs that glorify God. 4. No where did I read Jesus teaching to do nothing on the Sabbath. He said he is Lord of the Sabbath and made a point to emphasize it is better to do good things on that day. Paul says in Colossians 2:16 let no man judge you in respect of the Sabbath days etc which are a shadow of things to come. 5. We do use pictures of Jesus to teach Bible stories to kids etc and see nothing wrong about it. Jesus is human and God. He walked this earth as a man. We do not, of course, use pictures of "Jesus" as worship icons, stained glass windows and such as.
Good Evening from Northern Michigan Pastor... I am a Roman Catholic..."womb to tomb" as we say. We also baptize children and are very fervent about singing the Psalms, especially in a community iRoman Catholic nuns.... Just pointing out the similarities. May the Lord bless you and keep you 🙏🙏🙏💙💙
@@toolegittoquit_001 I've never heard this "gospel of works" you speak of. Please explain. Adoration is worship reserved only for the Trinity. Mary and other saints are venerated (honored) but not adored. The real presence in the Eucharist is as old as Christianity itself. The doctrine of transubstantiation does not explain the what of the Real Presence but the how, or the process, of how the host becomes the real presence (accidence vs. substance). The Papacy is authority given to Peter as the leader of the Apostles (see how Matthew 16 mirrors Isaiah 22). While the role of the Pope has been more clearly defined as time went on, the early church recognized the primacy of the Bishop of Rome over the other bishops.
@@tedterrific7416 there is just as much verses that "prove" free will as there are that "prove" predestination. It was silly of this pastor to act like predestination is clearly taught in the Bible when theologians have debated and wrestled about it for 2 thousand years.

Thank you for your clear explanation of these things
Keeping the Sabbath day is a real blessing, so many Christians miss out on This . I keep the 7th day that is on Saturday. Why do you keep the first day of the week, what is your thoughts on that❤
Jesus was resurrected on the first day of the week, that's why the majority of Christians worship on that day. Also Paul said in Galatians 4:10 "You are trying to find favor with God by what you DO or DON'T DO ON CERTAIN DAYS OR MONTHS OR SEASONS OR YEARS! I FEAR FOR YOU. I am afraid that all my hard work for you was worth nothing!" If you want to keep Saturday as Sabbath, that's fine but don't be "puffed up" about it in an attitude of pride as that is sinful!!
Most Christian’s confuse the moral law and the ceremonial law. The fourth commandment states keep the seventh day holy as a sabbath to the Lord. The ceremonial law was put away at the cross. There was many sabbaths in the ceremonial law. That’s what Paul was talking about.
John 14:15 If you love me you will keep my commandments. Remember the Sabbath to keep it Holy. The Sabbath is Saturday the day the God chose. With that being said... I attend services on Sunday and rest on the Sabbath. The command is "to keep it Holy and do no work, but to rest as God rested.
@@larrydewein Jesus was resurrected on the Sabbath not Sunday. In God's calendar the Sabbath ends sundown Saturday. Days don't change at midnight. So when Mary rushed to the tomb early on the first day the sun had gone down Saturday evening and Jesus was already risen. Sunday was first-fruit. wave offering of the barley. Jesus presented those who rose from grave that walked into Jerusalem. that was why he told Mary not to touch him. The Roman Catholic Church changed the day not Jesus..This they freely admit in their writings. Not being puffed up just saying.
We just started attending a Presbyterian church. It’s been so nice. Good Bible teaching, incredible worshipful singing. They sing regular current worship songs. My husbands hates the “ turn around and meet someone” part lol . He hates it in every church. We’ve gone to Calvary Chapel for ever but since pastor Chuck died the inconsistency is to great and I’m over it.
Haha! I dislike it too. It's so meaningless and silly and seems to really break the "flow." Its so funny, I attend an Anglo Catholic Church now having attended many different denominations in the past and universally ppl complain about it.
Thankyou Matthew! Raised a baptist they also had their own "rules". Being 75 years old, in high school every body knew what church you went to. There were several young ladies I wanted to date, but because they were catholic, I passed so as not to get emotionally attached. Thats just the way we were back then. I remember my uncles saying once the only ones going to heaven were baptist. Thats when I removed myself from them, the baptist, and became a christian, period. As you said there is one way to Heaven, by the shed blood of Jesus Christ, on the cross, risen , seated at the right hand of God. Labels dont mean anything, what the scripture teachs is key. Romans 10-9 says it all
I really appreciate the thoughtful way you describe your beliefs. As an AG licensed ministers, I have a different opinion, but I really appreciate your gentleness and thoughtfulness brother. Keep up the good work.
I was very interested in what you said about honoring the Sabbath then I realized you were celebrating the Catholic Sabbath but everything else you mentioned was very interesting and inspiring.
Sunday is the Christian Sabbath, as authorized by God after Christ arose and worshipped with the disciples on Sunday, and every subsequent Sunday until His ascension.
@@sheryllynmc Actually Sunday is the Catholic Sabbath the Catholic Church even admits that it was the Catholic Church that changed the Sabbath to Sunday and MANY years after Jesus. Also the Catholic Church claims the Church sanctified Sunday because they did NOT want to worship on Saturday because they did not want be associated with those that killed Jesus. Sunday is a Catholic sabbath Saturday is still the true Sabbath. Check out history please don’t take my word for it. I hope you actually do check it out but you probably will consider me an idiot and refuse to seek the truth.
@@bigtobacco1098 The Catholic Church didn’t get it wrong they changed the worship day on purpose. Find ONE official verse in the Bible that actually says that SUN DAY is the new Sabbath. God did not change His mind or His Commandment. Catholic Pope did it in 336 AD. I think that The SDA church has a monetary reward if anyone can find a verse in the Bible that proves the Sabbath has been changed to Sunday. Contact them with your evidence.
Thanks for the video. I am a member of the Afrikaans equivalent of the Presbyterian church. The Dutch Reformed church. We believe everything you mentioned. The key here is to be United in essential biblical doctrine, have liberty in non essential doctrine & exhibit love always for other believers who do not hold to all your beliefs.
“Sola scriptura”. Is the slogan of the reformed movement. Yet they really don’t go by what they say. They don’t really believe in “scripture alone”. And it’s obvious by how they are ALWAYS quoting from other sources such as Calvin, Luther, catechisms, church fathers, and church councils. So it is definitely not scripture alone, unfortunately.
Nothing 'wierd' about any of this. Presbyterians follow the teachings of the Bible no 'ifs', 'and's', or 'buts' and certainly no GIMMICKS. An absolute privilege and lifetime gift to be at one with God in the Presbyterian faith.
I was raised Presbyterian but converted to the original Catholic faith. Studying the history before the Protestant breakaway was so enriching. Everyone should read what the original church doctors wrote from the first century.. Read 33 DOCTORS OF THE CHURCH, a Tan publication, to read the actual writings of the first Christian leaders right after Paul.
@@sheryllynmc The 95 Theses were actually a defense of Catholic teaching. In it Luther defended purgatory, indulgences and the papacy. He just didn't like the Pope at the time or the abuse of indulgences. Luther's theological accretions didn't come until after his excommunication in 1523.
Correct Shelly. This is what I mean about how the prodastants faith has lost sight of the original teachings of the Church. And now centuries later they don't even know the faith. This this idea that Jesus ins my personal savior and if I'm born again in the spirit. What ever that means. I'm going straight to heaven upon my death. Thank goodness we got purgatory. God gives us every opportunity to get right with him. Luther decided he didn t like a couple of books in the Bible. So. He took them out of his Bible. And he decided we are saved by faith alone. I say. We can't get to heaven unless you got a cool classic car no younger than 1979. How ridiculous does that sound. But that is what Luther and all the others did. Who were the church fathers. What church were they part of. Catholic. Your traditions are Catholic.
Some awesome people I know and who have formed me into a better Christian were Presbyterians. They ultimately helped reinforced my belief in the truth found within the teachings and traditions of Holy Mother Church. The Fatima message was a clear miracle for all Christians. I go to non denominational church..I don't find these practices strange. I myself do take or use any artwork or images of Christ. I'm also not big on the worship music. I would prefer to sing hymns or the psalms(which I never have sung the psalms)...wait.. maybe I need to check out a presbyterian church. Love your videos Matthew!
@@SomeGuy-rn9cg Well, we don't believe in the regulative principal. And we have slightly less defined views on several things. We're perhaps a bit more sacramental in our practice, more high church too.
@@jacobklug1691We also don't believe in the doctrine of double predestination that Presbyterians hold to. Besides our differing views on Baptism and the Lord's Supper that's another major doctrinal issue that divides Lutherans and Presbyterians. Even so, they are certainly our brothers and sisters in Christ.
@@susanmyrick2913It is the belief that God predestines some to salvation and predestines others to unbelief. Lutherans agree that God predestines those who are saved but reject the belief that predistines anyone to unbelief and hell.

Science for the Church is an organization with a splendid website. A co-founder is a Presbyterian minister. It seeks to bring scientists, engineers, young adults, pastors and others into dialogue and reaches many.
One other difference in the Presbyterian Church. As someone who has been raised Presbyterian it was sometimes strange when visiting other Christian denominations. Where we lived in a brand new suburb, the Presbyterian church had not yet been built and our neighbours often invited us to their Churches. When visiting the town my parents met and wed, we always attended the Presbyterian Church my grandparents belonged to. The difference I refer to is in the words of "The Lord's Prayer". It is usually stated as "forgive us our trespasses", but Presbyterians say "and forgive us our debts, while we forgive our debtors". While visiting other denominations I was thrown off by hearing different words. Perhaps you could explain these differences.
It mainly depends on which Bible translation the congregation uses. Many modern ones tend to just say “sins” as the other words, while accurate, don’t have the same depth of meaning they did long ago. Of course, saying “sin” is discouraged in society now.
4. Not everyone can keep the Sabbath. People who work in essential services have to work on the Sabbath. Doctors and nurses and emergency responders like myself. I have 2 days off a week and try to use one of them as a day of rest.
Pray about it. My husband had to work on the sabbath for years until he got a promotion. God will work it out for you. It’s tough I. The US to be a sabbath keeper, but it’s doable. I was able to work on Sundays, so I could get the sabbath off.
There is NO biblical prohibition against providing truly essential services on the Sabbath. "And it came to pass, as he went into the house of one of the chief Pharisees to eat bread on the sabbath day, that they watched him. And, behold, there was a certain man before him which had the dropsy. And Jesus answering spake unto the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath day? And they held their peace. And he took him, and healed him, and let him go; And answered them, saying, Which of you shall have an ass or an ox fallen into a pit, and will not straightway pull him out on the sabbath day? And they could not answer him again to these things." Luke 14:1-6.
This was really informative and interesting for me as a Roman Catholic. There are many ways to become confused about the beliefs and practices of the myriad Protestant denominations of Christianity. America in particular has been greatly influenced by the diligence, discipline and simple faith of Presbyterians. Ultimately it is our shared embrace of Our Savior Jesus Christ that binds us all together.
He forgot a few things. No images or pictures if Jesus. They call that idolatry.. but pictures of family members etc are not. Double standard. They teach double predestination. This means God created some people expressly to go to hell and others to go to heaven. They also teach that Jesus died only for the elect, not for everyone. And that we are totally depraved, not just fallen. 😂 This is calvinist teaching. All presbyterians are calvinists following the teachings of John Calvin. Their achrinim is TULIP. Check it out.

Nice description! My Cumberland Presbyterian had/has a beautiful choir, great sermons, wonderful preachers, and people... I'm now Messianic and have embraced Leviticus 23...and The Way of Yeshua... This was a perfect description of a lovely church...
FYI, the Cumberlands broke away from the mainline Presbyterians over Calvinism ie, that God predestines certain people for salvation and creates the rest to be destroyed in order to "glorify Himself".- a heresy that contradicts the bible and blasphemes God's character. What the bible ACTUALLY teaches is that all men are born separated from God because of Adam's sin but they are all likewise accepted by Christ's substitutionary sacrifice, but it's offered to each as a gift which they are free to either accept or refuse. God doesn't force salvation on some and withhold it from others as these TULIP Presbyterians teach.
I’m a big proponent of psalmody. Unfortunately, the Presbyterian denomination I grew up in (PCA) has for the most part adopted the “praise band/praise team” model with Hillsong-type music. Psalmody is not weird: Psalmody is singing God’s own words back to God.
My first year in college was ruined because I was staying with an aunt and uncle who were Presbyterians. I am Catholic. They knew it and I knew they were Protestants but thought nothing of it. However as time went by my aunt was fanatical about her beliefs and tried hard to convert me to their church. She wanted me to attend Sunday services with her and uncle. I refused to go. I had my church why go anywhere else? Could never understand why they would invite to stay with them if she was going to be this way. Eventually I had to go home on the weekends because she just couldn't stand it that I would not come to he church. She wanted me to read the bible and find out the truth. What really made me angry was that she called the mass "an empty ritual." Not sure how she came to hate Catholics so much. She did wake me up and I did some questioning about my faith and got the answers I needed. I am a better Catholic now than I ever was. One thing I was never able to do with my aunt was have a friendly discussion about our faiths. She was one of those women who was right and that was it. My church has a tradition of stained glass windows and statues and other pictures of saints and Christ. You have to remember for many years people were illiterate and these were visual aids to help them understand the faith. As far as being bible based churches as most Protestant churches are you seem to forget that the church didn't have a bible for over 300 years after Christ. And then it was the Catholic church that produced it. The church was born of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost. God did not drop a bible on the apostles' heads.
As an evangelical through my entire life now at eighty, you have to understand that evangelical protestant Christianity is really a "cult" of sorts off of the mainline Protestant denominations. They are pretty much DIRECT SPIRITUAL DESCENDANTS of the Pharisees who were 100 per cent CONVINCED they were the TRUE BELIEVERS AND HEIRS AND GOD'S FAVORITES. Of course they were deceived as Jesus CONTINUALLY pointed out. Anybody that was not with them and their theological beliefs and ways was a heretic. I apologize to you as a Catholic as well as to the Orthodox ( Greek, Russian, etc.) and all the so called "cults", Mormons, Jehovah's Witnesses, Seventh Day Adventists, Christian Scientists, etc. But pay NO ATTENTION to them as Jesus told the disciples to pay no attention to the Pharisees. There are a FEW decent evangelicals such as Billy Graham, his son Franklin Graham and others who are NOW the ONLY FEW I pay any attention to. Now when these FUNDAMENTALIST/FUNNYMENTALIST types read this, they will condemn me to the pits of hell and start quoting scriptures out of context to bolster their points as you are saved by faith alone (Martin Luther's error) as James, Peter and Paul along with Jesus himself make it plain that "faith without any works is dead, meaningless and won't save you!"
I fully expected you to mention having a "calling". A friend of mine from high school is a Presbyterian minister, his calling is woodworking and he's always posting his latest creations on Facebook. My uncle became a Presbyterian a couple of decades ago, and his job had always been as a maintenance superintendent for a high school, but he felt his calling was psychology, and he went back to school when he was like 40 and earned a doctorate because of this belief. As far as I know that belief is something unique to Presbyterians.
I was raised Church of God, but from the age of 32 til now I was in a non-denominational church environment, and the Calling on a Christian's life was always taught in both scenarios.
I hold a fairly strict view of the Lord's Day myself (Dutch Reformed). I try not to do anything that would necessitate others not being able to observe it (shopping, even filling the gas tank, etc.) However, I do think some forms of recreation at home (walks, reading, smoking, shooting, movies, etc.) are acceptable.
My tradition is Baptist and I and my wife miss the traditional hymns. The contemporary "worship" songs - sometimes called "7/11" i.e., a seven-word verse sung eleven times - have crept into too many churches. We attend a PCA church that is excellent in every way but does not sing the Psalms or the traditional hymns from a hymnal. Our worship music is led by a "modern" worship team (guitars, mandolin, violin, and too-much drums); while the songs we sing are contemporary they are NOT of the 7/11 type (like Getty's "In Christ Alone"). Oh how we would love to be worshipping through the traditional hymns or even sing the Psalms.
I attend a church that is quasi-Presbyterian. My mother was Anglican so I was raised in the Episcopal church while also having country Baptist very active grandparents. It was due to them that I came to faith in one of CEF 5-day clubs. I am formally biblically educated and now consider myself a reformed dispensationalist. I have no issue with 4 of these "weird" things. However, I do have an issue with child/baby baptism unless it is of an anabaptist nature whereas as an adult, understanding the mature things of the Lord, then make a public confession of Christ in the act of baptism. I have met too many "christians" who hang their salvation on the fact that they were baptized as children. This is a hangover from the RCC practice that also should have been reformed (as well as the allegorical hermeneutic). I get the paralleling of circumcision with baptism. But circumcision was given to a nation as a sign. Nowhere in the NT is the mandate of baptism given in that same vein. I have no problems with baby/child dedication. But understanding the nature of water baptism as merely a public confession and identification of The Faith (Jude) and not having any regenerative properties, babies/children do not have the wherewithal to cognitively make such a confession. Again, my biggest beef is that all too often, in my experience, people rely upon baptism as a means of salvation. In the early church often an adult was not baptised until after one or two YEARS of catechism. Sadly most Presbyterian churches no longer hold catechismic schooling for its members. At least in the Episcopal churches I attended, we were taught the 39 articles prior to being able to partake in communion. I love my assembly. Wished it wasn't such a long distance from me.
There is a point to water baptism in the Presbyterian Church, you've joined the visible church. If your confession alone is needed for eternal salvation in the Baptist Church, then water baptism is merely an extension of your confession. What does it do? It's with your mouth that you have confessed unto salvation.
the thief on the cross wasn't baptized and Chris told him this day you shall be with me in paradise. Baptism is not a requirement to salvation, but a symbol to tell others I believe, and I accept Christ as my Saviour. Praise Father, Son and Holy Spirit!
We frequently sing the Psalms in the Lutheran (LCMS) church. It takes a bit of getting used to! Like how can you have the same rhythm no matter how many words or syllables there are. 😅
Martin Luther started Protestantism in the 16th century. Calvin, Zwingli and others joined in but had disagreements on doctrine so they all went their separate ways. Those who followed Calvin ( calvinists ) are also known as presbyterians. Those who followed Luther, were and are known as Lutherans. Your answer... 16th century.
Prior to the 16th century, Martin Luther had been a Catholic monk. In fact, for the first 1500 years of Christianity, everyone was Catholic, following the bishop of Rome, the Pope.
Grew up in a Primitive Baptist church which seems to share some of the things that you talked about in this video. I have learned something of the Presbyterian belief, and now understand the differences between the PCUSA and the PCA. Thank you for that. None of these 5 things are strange to me. I only have the issue with baptism, but it's not a so called "deal breaker."

@@jumperstartful yes I believe God initiates the salvation process by taking a heart that’s as scripture declares is wicked and is His enemy, and replaces it with heart of flesh that responds to the Gospel.
To enter the heavenly kingdom and reign with God forever,YE MUST BE BORN AGAIN.
You were born again. At your baptism
I baptise you in the name of the father and of the son and of the holy spirit.
There you go. Once out of your mom once under the water.
You have to be baptized, not sprinkled. You sprinkle blood, not water. Jesus was baptized. Not sprinkled.

@@percyhawkins716
All presbyterians are Calvinists...followers of the principles set forth by John Calvin.
T= Total depravity means we are all totally depraved due to original sin. Most Christians believe we are deprived.
U=Unconditional election means that God chooses to save some people and to pass over others. He has a love for some people he does not have for others. Most Christians believe that God wants to save everyone and also that this theory eliminates man's free will.
L=Limited atonement means Jesus died only for those he chose, not for the whole world, despite John 3:16 stating that God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son.
I=Irrestible grace means if God chose you as his elect you cannot choose otherwise. This reflects his power. Most Christians acknowledge God is all powerful, but that we have free will, which allows us to choose against God.
P=Perseverence of the saints means all those who truly have believed in God will never finally fall away. God will not let us fall from his grace. This is also known as "once saved always saved".
You can search things like "why the 5 points of Calvinism are not biblical" and get more detail on this. Research shows Presbyterian denominations are declining dramatically.

what day is your sabbath on?
@@tuniabjc9659 good question. I was watching the video and he mentioned "the lord's day". Everytime I hear that, they are talking about the first day of the week, the day the Roman catholic church transferred from the seventh day. They did this under their own authority. Since they are not honoring our Creator on the day He sanctified at the beginning of creation and calling the sabbath of the beast the lord's day speaks volumes.
Wow I just wrote something similar to your first sentence without seeing what you wrote!!

I would have to say, "The wages of sin is death, and babies die." I was taught that the word for "baptism" is to wash.

This denomination makes the most sense to me. I’ll be visiting a Presbyterian Church for the first time tomorrow and I’m so excited! 🙏🏿
Check out their TULIP acronym to see what that means. He forgot to mention all that. All presbyterians are followers of John Calvin.
Jesus only died for the elect.

Thank you for sharing!

Did you have to be re-baptised as an adult when you transferred membership?

Wonder why?

Thank you Matthew Everhard for that concise information. It’s something I’d wondered about since recently discovering, and being much blessed by, the late R C Sproul’s teaching.
As a Staff Elder (Associate Pastor, Worship and Visitation) in a Baptist Church, I openly say I can make a stronger argument for infant baptism in a covenant context than for baptizing very young children in a credo baptist context. Premature baptism in the latter setting ironically becomes a false assurance of salvation for adults displaying no evidence of regeneration because “I would not have been baptized if I were not saved.”
I do hold to believer baptism, but counsel parents against prompting young children to be baptized. Bar mitzvah age seems an appropriate timeframe, announcing the candidate as a son/daughter of the new covenant.

What a kind, helpful and gracious explanation; thank you brother. I would live a sit down to discuss predestination with you, and I love your spirit.

Keeping the Sabbath day is a real blessing, so many Christians miss out on
This .
@@garymarj6065good job
My hubby hates that part too. He really just doesn’t want to do it. So, he’s not alone.
Haha! I dislike it too. It's so meaningless and silly and seems to really break the "flow." Its so funny, I attend an Anglo Catholic Church now having attended many different denominations in the past and universally ppl complain about it.
Avoiding 2CV is not strange. Stay the course, my good man!
Except most of what people claim is a 2CV doesn't actually violate the 2C.

@cdmcintyre1854 how did the church get this wrong so early ???
@@bigtobacco1098 Actually it became official after the Catholic Church declared Sunday the new sabbath in 336 AD.
@@bigtobacco1098 The Catholic Church didn’t get it wrong they changed the worship day on purpose. Find ONE official verse in the Bible that actually says that SUN DAY is the new Sabbath.
Reading what Paul ( the theologian) wrote is important to be following Jesus the Christ .
How about Luther's 99 Thesis?
It’s a shame, though, what they’ve taught SINCE the reformation, eg the immaculate conception, which incidentally, even the Orthodox Church rejects..
I would prefer to sing hymns or the psalms(which I never have sung the psalms)...wait.. maybe I need to check out a presbyterian church. Love your videos Matthew!
As a confessional Lutheran, its so cool seing a tradition so careful about following the scriptures. Not to mention I agree with like 60% of it all.
@@SomeGuy-rn9cg Well, we don't believe in the regulative principal. And we have slightly less defined views on several things. (real presence, predistination) Lutherans generally appeal to mystery to a larger degree than presbyterians...I think it's safe to say they're more systamatized. We're perhaps a bit more sacramental in our practice, more high church too.
@@jacobklug1691We also don't believe in the doctrine of double predestination that Presbyterians hold to. @@richsmith6997what is “double predestination”?

Perhaps you could explain these differences.
some eastern Orthodox churches say forgive our debts. It is not a presbyterian thing.
@@annyer262 I did not know. Thanks for the information.
America in particular has been greatly influenced by the diligence, discipline and simple faith of Presbyterians.
Ultimately it is our shared embrace of Our Savior Jesus Christ that binds us all together.
He forgot a few things. No images or pictures if Jesus. They call that idolatry.. but pictures of family members etc are not. Double standard.
They teach double predestination. This means God created some people expressly to go to hell and others to go to heaven. They also teach that Jesus died only for the elect, not for everyone.

We adopted a very limited amount of 'praise' music. Our church was PC USA. Unfortunately, due to changing tastes and demographics, our church folded.
Thank Issac Watts for flinging wide the door to man made hymns. The church largely forsook Psalmody and never looked back.
Singing the Psalms! 😮 I love that idea! How beautiful! Now I have to do a You Tube search for singing Psalms😊
Baptizing before salvation? How do you support that scripturally?
I was a member of a Presbyterian church for ten years.
Nobody told me that it believes in predestination and TULIP.
There is no gospel in Calvinism.

I am Presbyterian and we have beautiful stained glass windows with a huge image of Jesus at the front of our church.
Jesus forbid images, did he not?
Catholics sing the Psalms every Sunday to beautiful melodies.
here's a question, how long has there been Lutheran's? Etc. Etc. I am going to study on it!
