The basic idea behind this is to assume the unknown term as the last letters of script …….that are w ,x,y,z …… and the constant terms as starting letters a,b,c,d……. But from w,x,y and z …….we use x the most as unknown term because x is the least used letter in English ,French and Latin language ………..which makes it unique ……and convenient for typist to type…………as the least used thing should be unknown ………so, this is the basic idea behind using x as unknown term
Modern algebra comes from Arabic math and book name was Al-jabar. In that book author used "sei" word for unknown later it became "xei" and from there it is shorthanded to "x" in modern algebra.
