I grew up with this siren not too far from my grandmother's neighborhood, and it scared the hell out of me when I was a kid. Imagine waking up to it going off in attack in the middle of the night. But now I love that sound. People in her area have no problem hearing it.
The same thing happened to me back in 1971 for the first time hearing that kind of sound it scared me when we had the siren alert tests every last Friday of the month, we were use to hearing mainly the Federal Thunderbolt siren at home, at school and everywhere. When hearing this sound for the first time was when i was at school, me and my classmates were ready to hear the sirens wail and when it happen we hear the Thunderbolts but like in a few seconds a strange wailing sound came like out of nowhere which has to be the SD 10 and that scared us and the teacher kind of laughed at us cause she saw we were cuaght of gaurd of the sound, but no matter what this became my favorite along with the ACA Allertor the British Carter siren.
First of all, I deeply apologize for the late reply. And second, after reading your comment, what a story! Of course I was not around in the 1970s because I was born in 1984. But people that grew up during the cold war, like you for example, told me stories about the air raid sirens going off. I don't have to imagine, I've woken up to this siren at 4 in the morning once. My ex GF's dad lived in back of the station. Scared the bejeezus outta me, I never slept there again
These were the sirens they had all over the Los Angeles area - The last Friday of the month at 10AM they would test them & the whole city would echo this sound. Used to creep me out as a kid! A majority of the Los Angeles SD-10 sirens are still in place, but not used in decades...
I remember the Friday morning tests. One afternoon back in the early 80s, I was playing a board game with my sister and a friend when the nearby SD-10 siren went off. It wasn't 10 am on a Friday so it scared the crap out of me as I thought Soviet missiles were on the way. The siren only cycled once to my great relief. It must have been an electrical issue of some kind.
Oh ya! Remember them well. We had the SD 10's cousin, the 500T about 4 doors up the street from us which I believe used the same or similar ported chopper in it. Remember the "attack" drills at school on test days in the early 60s. That same siren is still there today wasting away. :-( Would love to restore it as a neighborhood memento!
This is the one we have in Catskill, and I will say that while I have gotten accustomed to hearing it from a distance, it still scares the living daylights out of me up close. You wouldn't expect something that looks like a barrel to be so... loud!
I have a blue federal signal sd10 right next to one of our farmlands, and it sounds just like this, just a bit louder, and I lover these types of sirens
I grew up in Anaheim in the 1960s and one of these same sirens was just down the street from our house. I remember they tested it in the morning and it used to scare the crap out of me.
Shaker road fire In ny had one of these for station 2 hasn’t worked in years but we are currently restoring the old siren to look good as new station one had an old thunder bolt 1000T
There’s an old rusty one down the street from me, I believe that it’s not in use anymore, but from what I’ve been told, it was used in the Cold War- I’m not too sure when it was used but it just sits in the corner of a neighborhood.
I am pretty sure this was the siren that was located in front of my elementary school when I attended in the early 2000s. It was painted yellow and on a wooden pole. It never went off as far as I remember, and it was removed at some point. I wish I had a picture of it.

I like this setup, a restored SD-10 mounted on a lattice tower. They fit together.
