  • Leros is a tiny Greek island seven miles from the Turkish coast where 2,500 migrants have arrived illegally by boat in the last three weeks. Without support from Athens or Europe, overstretched local authorities rely on a committed team of local volunteers to prevent chaos and humanitarian crisis. But as increasing numbers of migrants arrive at Leros, the island is at breaking point, as Phoebe Greenwood reports

+Ronald Po You'd think natural that if you're a muslim, and your religion being so important to you, you'd want to go to a muslim country. Most importantly: why are these people not trying to enter the Gulf states? I think there is more to this than poor refugees.

Philip Keys Behaved correctly? The Nazi's raped and murdered hundreds of thousands of Russians and executed Jews in the streets. WTF are you talking about? Muslims will do much the same but don't talk up the Nazi's mate. You will fall down on the argument every time.

Philip Keys Look to outbreak of riots and ethnic cleanising. Europe will look like a more disturbing version of Henry 8th persecution of Catholics but against non EU citizens and Muslims.
If our countries aren't smart enough or strong enough to stand up and say we have freedom of expression if you dislike the whole concept 'FUCK OFF BACK TO AN ISLAMIC COUNTRY OR AFRICAN FAILED STATE' Then we deserve the chaos that will inevitably happen.

So if Greeks go to Germany, do they get free housing and free food?
That one migrant was complaining how "Greece is a poor country". He definitely has high standards for a refugee.
I have a feeling most of these are not really refugees. They don't want Greece or Eastern Europe. Germany is where it's at.

Shure, destroy half of the population in the world just to make a point ? Reveal the truth ?
I think its not the best way. And in my country we are very liberal with others, in my country everyone could practice their religion, everyone, for many many years until now.
And my country was one of the champions in driven the muslims out of europe so many centuries ago, but mind sets must change with the times, and we are not a Templar country anymore.
But remember something, Europe has 600 million europeans, and iam one of them, but the refugees are 250.000, its not even 0.01 per cent, the problem is the radicals that could take the ride.
      Those are the dangerous ones.

Ruben Botelho Everything comes at a price. It's horrifying to think people don't understand that. If half the world has to die to get that point across, then so be it. I'd rather have half of humanity die and learn from their mistakes than have the entire planet become inhospitable and perish before space colonization is made possible.
If you're going to bring up those statistics, I may as well tell you to look up birth rate statistics. The UK is a great example. Sneaking your people into nations, legally or illegal, and destroying them from within is not a new concept.

I'll say it, I don't have any sympathy for these people simply because they don't need any help.
I'm from Turkey. We have about two millions of immigrants from Syria and Iraq and all of them receive more than monthly minimum wage without actually working, no questions asked. They can just walk up to any university and be admitted to any program they want with no proof of their previous education or an exam. They can also work legally without any restriction. And they still try to leave the country so they can be paid even more by someone else who has no responsibility to do so.
These people have more than enough money to repeatedly pay for their illegal attempts of crossing the border (which is not really a cheap thing to do). So, it's not about fear of death or survival, it's about abusing the welfare system in Europe.

    • @noelio67

We are all focused now in helping the migrants, but I don't see questions being asked enough. Everyone is trying to play the good Samaritan, but I see so many images of young men in their early 20's coming into Europe. Who are these men? Why are they not staying in their country to fight for it? There are so many others staying to fight. Why are there so many people coming to Europe? Why Europe? Why now? Why are they not going to the Gulf states? Refugees usually do not cross so many countries to get to one they like. Refugees are just trying to survive with the hope they can one day return to their land. Most of these so called refugees seem to be coming to Europe to stay. I find Europe to be too naive under the circumstances and I add my dose of skepticism.

The guy at the bar near the end has the right idea, that's exactly what's going to happen to Europe and what's worse, it's highly likely that the people "running" the EU are well-aware of it and bargained on this from the start. Germany already offers 650 euros per month, for 5 months for every refugee that comes into the country, making the prospect of being a "Syrian" refugee even more alluring.
What would they want to accomplish with this I wonder? For one thing, I pity the ACTUAL Syrian refugees that believe that coming into Europe will be an opportunity for them, when in fact, they're going to be used much like slaves, or much like the WWI and WWII refugees; cheap hands for hard labor. Adding all of the refugees to a country's demographic and by assigning to all of them jobs that will be payed next to nothing, you effectively make the actual unemployment issue of your own people, seem less. This will raise the EU's credibility. Check.
Much like someone mentioned in the comments, this is a Trojan Horse. Amongst all those refugees that "just forgot their passport", extremists are hidden with more than likely a hidden agenda to cause chaos around Europe and also having their religion effectively infiltrate (finally) Europe. What would this cause, I wonder? People dying, mostly innocent bystanders. Europe rebelling against anyone and anything refugee-oriented, causing said people taking it as an act of violence against their religion (because of course that's where it's going to wind up to), effectively causing the Middle East's wrath and starting a new war, perhaps WWIII? Ofc America will jump the gun too.
Conclusion; all of this is pre-arranged. Everyone knows what the other's hidden agenda is and the future is (possibly) predestined. I feel bad for the actual Syrian refugees; they escaped one war, to land head-first into another.
I hope I'm wrong on this, I really do.
DISCLAIMER: This is not a biased post against anyone's religion btw. I don't believe in anything/anyone, I know I'm a minority, but seeing innocent people die to satisfy another nation's religious beliefs, whichever religion that may be, should make every human sad and appauled. Have a good one, people.

My question is...I am a white South African, one of a nation who is also these days been haunt and slaughtered in my own country. Will Europe be so kind to accept me if I only arrive at one of their EU countries and tell them I am fleeing South Africa in fear for my life? Noooooo...they will put me on the first flight back where I am coming from...even if I possibly might have a Europe ancestor....????? What is going on in this crazy world????

Humanity as a whole, all states, countries, communities have the duty of compassion to fellow-people in dire need. No-one is excused for turning a blind eye and a deaf ear to cries for help from those less fortunate. Countries that are not on the front line ought to wake up, educate their inhabitants not to be bigoted and offer immediate and substantive help.

But how would you feel yourself if your home had been flattened by bombing, family members killed and you were trying to save yourself and your children or anyone beloved still living? Who says these people do not deserve a chance to rebuild their lives?
Very easy to shut one's eyes and turn our back and pretend trouble does not exist, but it does and the West has had a big part in some of those nasty developments.
I hope you and others see this.

Secondly, you asked no such thing and
Finally, your first response was ignorant because the video refers to Syrians, Iraqis and Afghanis (no Africans! would have been if we were talking about the Libyans perhaps) - Where/what the West's involvement has been in these countries? Go read about it.

It's first time I've heard of you, but you have shown to be a remarkable investigator. All people have the right to live without being in constant danger from war-this is truly understandable-the fact remains that the EU, AND the middle East countries, will have to cooperate as a global humanitarian effort is needed to help refugees, migrants and the people in Greece that are struggling in their own issues exacerbated by policies implemented by the EU.!

I have a co-worker who was telling me the other day that Canada and other European countries (the wealthiest ones) should do a lot more to help the fleeing migrants. She argued that these countries can't turn a blind eye on people dying.
Of course, on humanitarian grounds, it's hard not to agree with her.
Yet can Canada and Europe's wealthiest afford to do it? Don't these countries already have enough economic worries (let's call it what it is - a recession) ? What about the fact that people are fleeing countries with dysfuncional societies and governments. What about the responsibility of those governments? They do the damage and then other countries have to clean up the mess?
I agree that the European Union and Canada should address the problem in a more effective way.
And letting those people die might mean that now we have different valuations for people of different origins. If one comes from a stable country one stands the chance of being labeled more valuable a human being than someone fleeing a war zone or abject poverty.
Unfortunately, the way I see it, in the near future (put it 5 or 10 years) most wealthy countries will be governed by extreme right parties and the migrant crisis will nothing but get worse.
Let's brace ourselves for darker days to come.

There are almost no refugees from Syria. These are predominately migrants from Africa and the ME attracted by the Northern countries generous refugee support. Of course, the Guardian can't be honest about the facts.
