BACKCOUNTRY SKIING CENTRAL HOKKAIDO; Skiing the high alpine in Japan’s Daisetsuzan National Park

The Daisetsuzan National Park is located in Central Hokkaido. The park is the largest in Japan and is approximately 60 km long and 30 km wide. The park is made up of primeval forest and some of the highest mountains and volcanoes in Hokkaido.
It snows a lot during the high winter months of December, January and February. The weather in March and April is a little more stable which is conducive to skiing the higher alpine areas of the Daisetsuzan mountains.
Sometimes skiing a line is a waiting game. Waiting for the right weather and snow conditions that will make skiing something possible.
Everything came together late in the day after the clouds lifted. There was stunning views of the live volcano further to the east. Great views, great snow and great terrain.

この日の深夜、雲が取れてすべてが揃った。東にある生きた火山の素晴らしい景色が広がっていた。素晴らしい景色、素晴らしい雪、素晴らしい地形。

Great line at the end.
The in-laws’ house in furano uses a self defence force calendar with each month a tank firing that month with seasonal colours and weather. Family BBQs are all the oldies from the base.

Good stuff. Is this only accessible later in the season or can these lines be done when the powder is the best? How about by heli? Will national park rules prevent you from doing that?

No heli in the park. Not allowed. Best done in spring when snowpack a bit more stable and better weather.
