SKIING JAPAN: What’s it Like Skiing Asahidake?
Asahidake is probably one of the most misunderstood ski destinations in Hokkaido. In recent years it's popularity has exploded.
One of the reasons is the quality of the snow that you will often ski here and the regular snowfalls during the winter season. It is the only real lift served skiing in the Daisetsuzan National Park, discounting Kurodake with the short 150 vertical lift at the top of the ropeway. And while 500 vertical meters vertical and staggered short pitches aren't anything to write home about in terms of terrain, you may have an incredible ski day due to the snow.
Deep days can be very deep, so it's best to come prepared with skis with a healthy width underfoot. Or a snowboard with decent length to get over the flat spots. There's a reason you see locals with giant snowboards here and poles to boot.
Clear days also combine fantastic views of the volcano and it's many billowing vents. It is a live volcano, but fairly dormant on the volcanic active scale.

SKIING JAPAN: Backcountry Skiing near Niseko, Hokkaido
Переглядів 4312 місяці тому
This is a bit of a regular spot for backcountry skiers visiting the Niseko area. The terrain is some of the steepest that you can access around Niseko and the snow quality is always very good. One of the good things about backcountry skiing in Hokkaido is that it is very accessible. The approaches aren't so long so that you can get the maximum amount of vertical in a day. And hot springs are ne...

JAPAN SKIING: A Spring Day at ASAHIDAKE

There is still good Powder skiing at Asahidake in March. One thing I like about later in the season is that we have better weather. There are many days at asahidake here during January and February where visibility is very low. It was a busy day initially but for the ropeway, but soon dissipated. There is a lot of really good touring options in the Tokachidake area which is at the southern end of the Daisetsuzan Park. This is really the center of Backcountry skiing in Hokkaido. There are multiple access points into the mountains from here And there is genuine alpine terrain. The tree skiing is also very good in the old growth spruce forests. There are deep days and then there a deep days in Niseko. This was one of those very deep days with it the gates only barely opened due to the incredible amount of snow that fell in 48 hours. We had been lining up at the cheer on moiwa and a patroller sneaked in front of us. It was perfect timing as when we got to the top he was just opening gate six. There were three others in front of us and ...

Mount Tokachi is a live volcano at the southern end of the Daisetsuzan national Park. Actually the live volcano is “Mae Takashi” or “Front Tokachi.” The main peak is actually behind it. On this day we had a group from Scotland and Australia. It’s not often that you can combine really good weather with fantastic snow but today we had it. The wind steadily increased and at the peak it was a very ...

We have been running backcountry skiing tours With Snowmobile assistance for a number of years now. On this day we had the antipodean crew of Stephen, Terry and Sue. Stephen was on a split board and came out with us 10 years prior with snowshoes. Maybe it wasn’t the deepest day of the season but certainly some of the best quality snow that I have skied during 23/24. Chuck is the director of Hok...
SKIING JAPAN: Checking the Tokachidake Snowpack
Переглядів 1,5 тис.7 місяців тому
In early December we always go up into the Daisetsuzan National Park to check the snow pack. Just across the valley from Furano is the Tokachidake area which is at the southern end of the range. The main objective is to see the depth of the snow and the coverage. It can take a while to ski safely up there as there are bushes which grow over 2 meters and these need to be covered. We will look at...

Any day where there is good visibility at asahidake is a good day! It is great to be able to see the billowing fumaroles on the volcano. When you combine the good visibility with great snow then you’ll have an amazing day. Up until this season and there hasn’t been a ski patrol at asahidake yet but it seems like they now have a volunteer patrol. They may not be in attendance every day but it is...

Mount Yotei looms large over the Niseko area. It is otherwise known as the ‘Fuji of the North.’ This wasn’t a day that we were expecting to get to the peak and caldera. It had been really windy the day before and we were of the expectation that above the trees the snow would be wind affected. A descending Japanese group that they had stopped at the tree line because it was wind affected. We had...
