No need to apologize. Keep working hard dude! We love your videos. We’d love some tips for our future video reactions. But we love your content, you’re the reason why we’re trying to make the transition from audio podcasts and reacting to video reactions.
"Leaves from the Vine" hits even harder when you realize it was the last thing Mako Iwamatsu, Iroh's VA recorded before his passing. May he rest in peace.
I think it’s not true, it’s a common misconception (or whatever that’s called). It’s often mentioned in comments that he performed this basically on his dying bed, but that’s not what actually happened.
@@Julihernnn Yeah I definitely notice moments in the next few episodes where it switches back and forth between Iroh's voice actors, even in this episode, Mako managed to voice a couple more lines before he passed away.
In Aang’s tale, the little girl with the pink hat and the cat was a Make a Wish kid whose dream was to meet the writers of the show. They did her one better and gave her a little character and part.
I know everybody talks about Leaves from the Vine, but I really do like Zuko’s short. It’s the first time you see him get to be a normal person, and he’s so scarred he doesn’t allow himself to relax until the very last moment. When he says “it was nice” when Iroh asked if he had a good night, it’s the first time that I started seriously rooting for him.
Zuko’s Tale is my fav of the episode, he deserves a nice evening and it shows so much about his character in this moment that he’s nearly incapable of just enjoying his time with someone because of constant hyper-vigilance.
He is at last starting to build a new identity for himself after leaving the Fire Nation, this is the first day when he's not thinking "I'm the banished Prince of the Fire Nation, I have to restore my honor" he's just "Lee" a normal person living in this city, he's starting to wonder is it ok for him to just forget about his past life, move on, have an Earth Kingdom gf, settle down here, etc
Amazing! We all cried with Iroh. That was a true tear jerker, not only because we felt it with Iroh, but because this was Mako’s final voice role before his death and that segment was dedicated to him.
Something many people miss about Iroh's tale, is that his encounters have a specific order, brilliantly showing the progression of a father raising a son to manhood: 1. Toddler: comforting him as he cries 2. Young boys: teaching them about character and honesty. 3. Young man: encouraging him to be his better self. Just such a beautifully crafted piece of cinematic art!
tales of ba sing se and appas lost days are such a gruesome back 2 back combo to watch haha. the tale of iroh gets a bunch of attention (as it should) but man, appas lost days HITs. when he goes back to the library, its just straight up gone. imagine what appa was feeling. the last place he ever saw aang ACTUALLY no longer exists.
Iroh’s son is apparently supposed to look like Mako Iroh’s VA when he was younger. Mako had cancer so this was the last thing he sang before he passed. So he’s singing it to himself 😭
Apparently that was also very important to his rizz, like wait, you messed up a Haiku? What a loser, they're all immediately over him like damn was nice while it lasted, also Sokka's over here flirting on an entire crowd of girls this time when he has even less of an excuse, before you could say he just met Suki one time they weren't a thing, but...now you're a thing, bro, this is sus as fuck, she's out here fighting to save appa lol
One of the best things about this show that I take for granted is how they show the “villains” lives too. They could have focused the show entirely on the Gaang and their allies, but instead they show us what the antagonists are up to, how they’re feeling, where they are in their lives. It’s really not something you see often, and I only recognize that because of reactors who comment on that detail early on in the show. This episode just really drives that idea home for me.
8:45 Realize that someone scrubbing Toph's feet is akin to someone brushing your eyes. They're literally the only way she knows what is what and where is where.
Bro as someone who’s seen this series many many times I can’t even keep it together when Iroh is singing that song to the kids. I think the song hits especially hard near the end because the voice actor himself was deep into his cancer diagnosis and he was singing that song knowing he was about to die soon.
Hey Mel, an interesting fact about Appa’s last days is that it won a Genesis award from the Humane Society showcasing abuse that animals face in the circus.
It's weird how culture affects visual language even in animation, I've seen a ton of people who think Zuko firebended in his fight with Jet, but as someone who loves old Chanbara movies it was pretty clear to me even as a kid that they were just animating the sword that way to represent how the afterimage of swords used to look like on film. Also, the only reactor who recognizes Robin's voice actor is in this show, and every role he plays, big W.
I watch the Iroh episode when it first aired on tv years and years ago. And still to this day I tear up watching it. It doesn't matter how many times I've seen it.
There is a theory that Ty Lee is descendant from air nomads that escaped the purge . But since the air nomads dealt with so much pain from the purge . They lost spirituality and in turn lost their bending but they could still dodge and weave . Ty Lee is as flexible as Aang and the nomads . But that is just a theory
When you wiped your tears with the 2nd set of appa arms, I lost it 😂. Appa really had to fight for his life and he's always ready to square up of he needs to
Hearing Iroh sob like a child wanting comfort from their parent breaks me. The wisest, most well meaning character on the show whose entire character is helping everyone else find comfort and peace, sobbing uncontrollably (“little s-soldier boy”) is awful. The way he practically whines that last “home” is terrible. 💔
The writing on the picture of his son, is apparently a message from his son, that reads "From you loving son, see you in Ba Sing Se when we win the war"
When I rewatch the show, I always ask myself if I'm ready to cry when The Tales of Ba Sing Se and Appa's Lost Days come up. I'm really glad they trusted their audience with The Tale of Iroh and didn't shy away from showing just what Appa was going through. I might not have been more than ten when it started, but A:tLA seemed to grow with me.
No judgement from any fans of the show for tearing up at these two episodes. Tales of Ba Sing Se and Appa's Lost Days are emotionally the two hardest to watch back to back but the creators had you locked in. I think after a season with these characters they knew they could get more emotional because it is characters we care about. Honestly from this point on lock in, cuz we in for the ride
Your comment at the end made me laugh cuz one of the lessons of the show is that the bending type itself isn’t what corrupts people, it’s who they choose to be regardless of their nation. You’ll understand more when we get to Book 3, and I don’t think that’s a spoiler to say. Also I leave a comment every time I have a thought because I assume multiple comments is more engagement than one long ass comment, for those wondering why I left like 8 comments.
I'm glad that the show, a kids show at that, showed the true cruelty of animals in circuses. When I saw this as a kid it made me second guess going to circuses and I was right to do so as its a very cruel environment for all animals, not just wild ones.
Iroh is the best. I love his patience he has with zuko. I myself have just about finished watching this series for the first time and I love iroh in the series and Zuko and Touh the best characters (imo)
A surveillance state in which the peace is kept via social stratification, information management, and the covert use of police power? Conveyed in a format and tone that ten-year-olds can take in and understand? This show's a goddamned miracle.
Appas lost days is so much. It’s the first time we see him since his capture and we don’t get a reunion for a few more episodes. Makes me cry thinking about how connected aang and appas souls are and how much they miss/need each other 😢 this is the longest they’ve ever been apart( that we know of)
25:44 I feel the same way haha we assume that in the war the Fire Nation are the invaders, so the Earth Kingdom must be "the good guys", then the more you find out about them the more its like "actually, maybe the Fire Nation should take over, y'all are insane"
Watching Tales from Ba sing se and Appa lost as a kid was a trip 😭😭😭I was emotional intelligent enough to understand how touching those episodes are and lived them till this day.

It’s actually nice that you noted the cutaway scene from the Azula/Suki fight as logical because Appa isn’t there anymore, most people are just upset they didn’t get to see the end, rightfully so lol cuz Suki.
I like leaving it as a mystery, none of the main characters, not even appa saw it so they don't know, we have way more information than them, but like them we don't have 100% of the facts yet the writers are like "you want to find out? We know. Guess you better keep watching, huh?" lol
