      They closed Waffle House: well, looks like we’re looking for a new 50th state. Wonder if Puerto Rico or DC is still interested…

    • @Naturebabi
      @Naturebabi Рік тому +9

      @@SurprisinglyDeep I’m exaggerating. We do answer the phone but only about 1/10 times. It’s because we are busy and usually people who order over the phone never come to pick it up/go to the wrong Waffle House (even if we specify which one we are) so it ends up being a waste of time and money. And if we answered to tell them to come inside to order they would throw a fit. So not answering was just easier.
      Idk if you knew this but servers take the order, call the order, clean the entire restaurant inside an out. From ceiling lights, dishes, salt and pepper shakers, the parking lot, the floors, the bathroom, wipe down the stainless steal, refill and clean syrup, and much much much more. So we usually are genuinely busy. Especially in the morning. At the time
      I used to try to answer the phone but could never get to it in time.

    The Waffle House Index! I remember reading about this!
    So for anyone not in the south, or interested in the science, this is basically a type of microeconomic trend that can be used for purposes other than, you know, economic stuff.
    A lot of it is talked about in stuff like Freakonomics. For example, if you look at these tiny trends, it is possible to find terrorists just by using bank information, like one numbers guy decided to work on in the UK, or figure out that walking home from a bar is just as dangerous as driving drunk (since drunk pedestrians are killed more often than in accidents.)
    The Waffle House Index is one of the microeconomic trends that NOAA actually uses to supplement its reporting in cases where they can't get enough feet on the ground. Because Waffle House restaurants are notorious for staying open through hellfire or shitstorm, it's actually possible to figure out where the worst parts of the storm and the damages are going based on the menu at the local restaurants, with best case being "fully open," middle being "reduced offerings" (since these guys actually try to stay open when the gas gets cut or some other service stops; they have steel balls, I swear, they will serve you waffles even if it's the second coming of Christ) and worst being "closed."
    Combine this with other trends, such as the Twitter trend, which is a known effect where Twitter use spikes right before hurricane impact, which can be useful for figuring out a proper landfall time, and you have yourself an entire system of "oh shit" meters entirely based on societal objects instead of purely weather instruments.

    • @sergeantassassin3425
      @sergeantassassin3425 Рік тому +15

      We have a similar system up north, we measure it off of whether or not there are actually any cars out on the road that aren't cops/ems/firefighters or utility/road vehicles like snowplows.
      We can get upwards of 10-ft high snowdrifts on the sides of the road and you can still see plenty of traffic going to/from. When it gets bad is if there's extreme cold/blinding blizzards (regular blizzards aren't too bad, just have to know how to drive in them). The former causes the entire road to become one single ice sheet, and even the best drivers are hopelessly doomed to slip n' slide, AWT and chains be damned. The latter is just simply impossible to drive through after a certain point, as worst cases have you unable to see the front of your own vehicle.
      So regular traffic - A-Okay.
      Only a few cars - Weather's not good, but tolerable.
      Complete vacancy - This is very bad.

      I live a few hours from Winnipeg (Canada). In the winter, the Trans-Canada highway closes all the time. Meh. School buses outside of a city on rural routes get cancelled fairly regularly. But if they close the Perimeter Highway, or classes and/or busses inside a city get cancelled - it's gonna be bad or is bad. We had our first in-town snow day in like 25 years last winter. The one previous to that was like 11 or 12 years. Basically twice in my life and I'm 45 lol!

      my parents always kept a hurricane pantry during hurricane season, that way if there is a hurricane, you dont have to worry about runs on the grocery store. When hurricane season is over they would use some of the pantry stuffs. And while ive been around cold weather going to college in NYC, i didnt think about 2021 freeze here in houston other than planning on driving on icy roads, since i dont know how. But then i didnt plan on the power going out, and therefore losing heat to my house. I had only 2 duraflame logs for my log burning fireplace, my car had about 1 gallon of gas in it (so i didnt have long to manually open the garage and sit in it and warm up that way), and i had less than 1/2 gallon of gas for the generator (not that it would have helped much since it doesnt hook up to anything that would have produced heat. I had scraps of bass wood for wood working and being a soft wood they burn up super quickly. By the time it was 24 hours without power, my house was around 25 degrees fareheit inside the house (about -5 degrees celcius) (it might have been colder but it was at least colder that the lowest the thermostat would show), the pipes were all frozen i had a mild case of hypothermia going when the power thankfully turned back on. As soon as it was all over, i decided to make sure i keep a case or two of those duraflame logs in my emergency pantry.

    That comment about Disney IS true.
    When I visited Disney World back in December in 2018 (week before Christmas), on my last full day there before the day of departure, it was storming in the morning, and I was very worried we'd have to skip a day at the park. Eventually, the storms did lessen to a rain shower and my dad and I were able to go to Epcot.
    It was raining all day at a light-moderate range, but BOY the park was so empty and vacant compared to arrival day (we did Epcot on the first day there and it was of course packed).
    So yeah, if I were to go to Disney World again, AND it was still raining (just not hurricane or HEAVY storm), I'd still go to one of the parks, just not Animal Kingdom or the water parks obviously.
    And this is coming from someone who normally doesn't like being in the rain but has kinda gotten used to it while in the Buckeye.*
    *Ohio Rain isn't as bad as Pennsylvania rain though. Cause unless it's a full-on storm, the raindrops aren't PELTING you basically (due to volume and/or intensity), sometimes to the point that an actual bathroom shower is actually heavier. It also doesn't help that Ohio rain tends to pass right on by, as mentioned in Ohio's first proper video.

The car went from 60 to 30 faster than i could process, and im lucky the airbags didnt turn on. turned out it was just waves of water, washing over the car as if being poured straight from a bucket. also, for anyone thinking this, the road itself was NOT flooded over. couldnt get the car above around 30 for the next few miles. a couple minutes later, clear skies.

    Okay, park rangers DO treat Kermode bears (spirit bears) with more care, but that's partly because they're deeply sacred to several indigenous groups, partly because they struggle to survive with their lack of camouflage, and partly because...I mean, look at 'em. They just LOOK like you'd get cursed for hurting them. Nobody wants to be the first person to find out what the curse is. It would probably start with all your fellow rangers turning on you. 😬
    (I love Kermode bears and wish there was more public knowledge about them. Fun fact: the gene that makes their fur white is the equivalent of the gene that makes humans redheads. They're ginger bears!)

    Floridian here, can confirm Ian was bad. The most disastrous part about it was the storm surges and it moving slowly. It did what Hurricane Charlie from the 2000s decade did. Was originally predicted to hit one area and swung to another just before impact. When a hurricane does that at a high Cat 3 or higher it causes a lot of damage. If it's a fast moving 'cane there's just a lot of general destruction. Houses torn up, trees and poles everywhere, cars scattered. If it's slow, there's a lot more water buildup and movement and that's what sweeps everything up. For hurricane Ian some areas even experienced what's called a reverse storm surge where water flows out instead of builds up. People could see the bottom of the Tampa Bay. It's insane. The hurricane came literally 1mph wind speed from turning into a Cat 5.

The concept of California getting into fights for what he believes is right with the full knowledge that it will loose him friends and make others hate him is a philosophy I do somewhat admire. Regardless of sharing beliefs, I do have an admiration for characters that are firm on their convictions knowing there will be consequences. It does become a different story when the character knows they’re going to hurt someone(s) with their actions but simply doesn’t care that they’re inflicting harm. Unknown harm from characters is something I don’t hate as much as known harm
