Thank you Senator Hawley. I never thought I would have to be afraid to go to church. I recently discovered that I am a descendant of one of the Pilgrims and I find the weaponization and politicalization of the FBI against conservatives to be reprehensible, deplorable and totally unacceptable. Do I have to be afraid to attend church now because my church might be on some FBI list somewhere?
The pilgrims weren't persecuted in Europe, they were part of the biggest religion. They weren't allowed to persecute anyone in europe. The more you know.

Unfortunately religious freedom was the only benefit for their exile, they were living in abject poverty, and could not recruit other separatists to join them. "Some preferred and chose prisons in England rather than this liberty in Holland with these afflictions" William Bradford, pilgrim leader.
The Dutch society tolerated their religious beliefs, but they feared the moral corruption of their children in the secular society. Their eyes turned to America, where they could freely worship and keep their English identity. They were also driven by the opportunity to propagate and advance the gospel of the kingdom of Christ in the New World. And thence, their arrival in 1620, very few of the original 102 making it, estimated half or 52 survivors. They called themselves the "forefathers", the term Pilgrim wasn't coined until around 1800. Then you also had the Puritans, who's leader, John Winthrop, came to the Americas where he felt they could create the ideal English church, "a light to the nations". They landed in 1630. The Puritans rejected religious freedom and numbered approximately 1000.
Pilgrims were definitely pursuing religious freedom along with being economic refugees (or adventurers). Puritans were not, they just wanted to create their own personal utopia, and America was the best place for that in their opinion. 2 different groups that get conflated.
