My name is Alex. To avoid doxing myself, I’ll just say I’m a student at an Ivy League Uni. The work load and commitments, are, to avoid superlatives, tedious and overbearing sometimes. Your channel has been a source of great relief and relaxation - as a reprieve from the din of life and, above all, as a reminder that poetry, literature, and stimulating conversations are a joy and privilege in which we are all lucky to partake. They can, and often should, be divorced from the austere academic environments in which we so often are forced to confront them. Your resemblance to my late grandfather, who passed away when I was 8, is uncanny - both in looks, habits, and occupations. I know he would be proud of my accomplishments, my faith, and abiding passion for prose if he were still here. Watching you seems to resurrect his memory for me - as if it were all a dream, and, sitting alone in the library on my computer, I suddenly entered his study and begin talking with him while he puffs on a pipe. Thank you for your genuineness.

    Very nice, Malcolm.
The Queen’s speech delivered in South Africa on her twenty-first birthday has been played many times here in the States as well, both before and since her death.
Earlier today before seeing this ‘Spell in the Library,’ I posted, on both Facebook and Twitter, a simple truth: “Leadership is servanthood.”
    Your thoughts reflect that truth.
I love your poem’s connection of Christ’s servant death and the coronation awaiting all who trust in Christ.
    Thank you.

I have admired her steadfastness for so many years. She faithfully did what was at hand each day, through so many ups and downs in the world, her country, and in her family. She lived up to the incredible legacy of her parents, whom I hold in the highest regard. I fear Queen Elizabeth's passing marks the end of something good and beautiful in the world. Rest in Peace, good and faithful servant of Our Lord. 🇬🇧
with love from the US 🇺🇸

Thanks Malcolm. Where I currently teach in Kenya, l observed mixed views on her passing - some, those of us who had lived for a while in Britain, were saddened by her death; others had a view partly hostile, partly indifferent out of memories of colonialism or resentment over the difficulty African commonwealth countries have had in visiting Britain. Though not denying these latter issues l reminded them of her great friendship with Nelson Mandela and that it was not she that was responsible for the vicissitudes of government policies. Strangely enough,my friends from outside the commonwealth were less divided over it, and were most appreciative of the dignity and style of the funeral process. For myself, born when my country had left the commonwealth and delighted when we returned in the early 90s, I must admit that I miss her. Thank you for your tribute to her and the theological angle you brought to her passing.

yes, I entirely understand that the association of the crown with empire is necessarily problematic for those who were victims of empire, but most of her reign she was concerned with the transformation of empire into commonwealth, the beginning of the long walk to freedom

@@MalcolmGuitespell . Indeed. That was my point l made to them. I pointed out that throughout South Africa’s struggle l never imagined that the Queen personally identified with the ideology of some of her ministers. I told them the true story that at its birth the African nationalist movement frequently sang ‘Rule Britannia’ together with ‘God save the King’ and ‘Nkosi Sikelel’i Afrika’ at their meetings….Why? Because as the song reminds us Britons never will be slaves. The founders of a democratic South Africa saw themselves as British and in fact encouraged their supporters, black and white, to serve in both world wars. I think the Queen knew this.

    Isn't hereditary privilege fundamentally unchristian?

    • @MalcolmGuitespell
      @MalcolmGuitespell  6 місяців тому

not necessarily, indeed both Old and New testaments are very interested in genealogy and Jesus is given and accepts the title Son of David. The abuse of inheritance is of course unchristian but our late Queen was entirely Christian un her understanding that Royalty. in Christendom, is a call to serve!

@@MalcolmGuitespell An interest in genealogy is one thing, but support for eugenics is quite another. The Royal family and the British ruling class were of course fans of Hitler because they feared their wealth and unearned privileges might be taken away, so much for the meek inheriting the earth. Nevertheless, a very enjoyable channel.

    ELIZABETH, Mortal at Last
21 years older than Mom now is:
But of course she had the best of
    everything.
Don’t say she was not ONE APART, lest
On your head you should bring
    All the wrath of rabble,
    Middle and posh the same.
The illusion of Majesty no more nor less
    Than Disdain fulfils the fancy.
    Don’t flag our discrepancy.
