Good morning Mike, I was under the weather all last week with a week long low grade migraine that just takes the stuffing out of a person. Doing fine this week, thankfully. 74 degrees today before the front moves through and brings us back down to the 50's. The snow in the mountains has been something. We have had only 2 measurable snows -- actually, only 2 snows. Taffy is loving the warm air -- I am too. I'm now counting down the days to the end of the month when I will begin seeing the first of the greening. Under bushes and the willows come out first. I love watching the land wake up after it's long nap. Have a good day. Thanks for the Zephyr.
Good morning, Ginny; Thank you got stopping by along with the comments. Saddened to read of the migraines. Happy to read they have abated. We will stay in the 40s for a couple of days and then graduate back into the 50s for the rest of the week. The weather radar is indicating snow in the air just north of Ft. Morgan. I think their "Automatic Idiot" (AI) doesn't understand what it is reporting. We have had skiffs of snow but not the big dumps as last year of what hit California's Donner Pass area. We still have a lot of frost in the ground and I think even out pear tree is budding too early. The high country is still getting snow and that is creating avalanche conditions along with the winds they have had up there. Anyway, Nice that Taffy is enjoying the warmer temps and outside tours. Have a great Monday. Please take care and stay safe!
Good mid-morning Mike. That’s interesting that #5 ends in Denver today. I totally understand with the snow west of Denver. Supposed to be 71 here today in southeast Iowa. Sprinkling a little now. Have a great day Sir! Mark in Iowa.
Good morning, Mark; I thank you for dropping by as well as the comments. We have radar reported snow just north of town right now. I haven't seen any though. Inly into the 40s here. Maybe 50s tomorrow. The big thing that I am hearing has to do with the derailment near Elko, NV. That is a bigger mess than was reported. Yes. Donner Pass area in California is also a mess with avalanche mitigation still underway. That goes along with the mess made by idiots driving I-80 out there. Colorado had the same type of issue on I-70 thru the mountains as well. Happy to live on the flatlands. I hope that you have a great Monday. Please take care and stay safe!
Good morning Mike. So the train is going to turn at Denver. Looking at video that is one big storm. I am glad I am not near it. Enjoyed your video this morning. You have a good day and be safe. Time for that cup of coffee and breakfast.
Good morning, Gerald; Thank you for tuning in along with the comments. It is a real mess out there. I have seen several videos on UA-cam as well as the national news outlets covering that event. I'll stay here and carp about wind. Denver seems to be a pet termination point for AMTRAK. Makes some sense as it is the last place for a long way the surrounding area is still flat. I hope that you have a great Monday down there. Please take care and stay safe!
Good morning Mike from 62 sunny mid Tenn. Bet Kelly wil enjoy change of scenery on the SWC either #3 or 4. Raton Pass, Abq, Tuscon , etc. Loss of revenue from Emeryville to Denver will hurt Amtrak. Hope you have a good Monday & get your med' s all taken care of. My mail order thru United Health Care seems to be pretty good since i changed over from local Walgreens. My mail kiosk is about 30 feet from my apartment door, hard to beat that. Enjoy hot coffee and good breakfast.
Good morning, Ben; I thank you for stopping by as well as the comments. I didn't catch what section Kelly will be working on the SWC. It is a nice change for here. AMTRAK isn't being hurt by a loss of revenue on the Zephyr route. UP owns the tracks west from Denver to Emeryville and the Oakland yard. The major issue is the ongoing cleanup of the grain train that derailed near Elko, NV. The snow levels across Donner Pass and the surrounding area is deep. They have been there before. The high country of Colorado may not get 12 Feet of snow in one storm, but the winds can make a mess of everything as happened in the Colorado high country over the weekend. Then add in the idiots who just have to drive the interstates after learning the roads are closed just to prove they are above the laws. Samr thing on I-80 across Donner Pass. Seem to all be from New York City. LOL! Wow! you do have a great pharmacy system there. Mine is my mailbox next to the front door when Tricare and Express Scripts get their stuff in one sock. Mine was mandated by Tricare as I am outside of a 75-mile radius of a military pharmacy where I would take up space waiting for the dregs after the active-duty folks are taken care of. They do come first, and I have been there. Same is true with the VA out here. I am eligible for the VA, but they are now overrun with Bidens illegal alien population. Anyway, I hope that you have a great Monday afternoon and evening back there. Please take care and stay safe!
Good morning Mike. Well the weather is the weather plus the Elko deal. Things will be back to normal soon. That snow in California is wild. I don't understand why all those people leave Denver when they know the roads and weather is bad up there in the hills. Oh well you have a good one out there, looks like a good day here.
Good morning, David; Thanks for tuning in as well as the comments. You hit the nail on the head. There are those who just have to go out there and try to prove they are above the law and mother nature. I'd just as soon sit in my easy chair and watch the weather channel. That costs too much money to get pulled out of the snow drifts along with the court costs and fines. Then comes the added insurance costs to boot. Let the people who are being paid to clear the roads do that work without interference. Ok. I'm off my soap box. At least the wind has slacked. Don't mind the cooler temps. I hope that you have a great Monday afternoon and evening up there. Please take care and stay safe!
Terrified Lizzie, Kayla, and Tracey are not going to make it to Salt Lake City. They got off at car 2, and Lauren Eve Dasher could not stand the train terminating in Denver, so she got off at car 7. The 4 people who got off flew from Denver and went straight home, thereby canceling their trips altogether and refunding their money. No biggie, Mike. They'll get back on the Zephyr, where they started from their respective stations in Chicago and Holdrege, where they can try their trips again.
Did I hear right, Mike? They annulled #5 west of Denver? Just as the Sierra Nevada clears up, now it's the Rockies? That was a nice, quick stop, this morning, but why did they let the train come close to drifting past the station. I know he came in faster than usual. Maybe he wanted to get home before the snow got to Denver? Gotta get in my 2 bits worth! Stay warm and safe and I'll see you tomorrow. 😂
Good morning and thank you for dropping by as well as the comments. Yep. Not the first time to have the Zephyr terminate in Denver, It's happened a few times this season and many times last year. That was a different voice form the cab this morning. I noticed that brakes were not used, and it was all dynamics. I think that caught Kelly off guard too. Oh well. Reservations at IHOP in downtown Denver may have been at risk. LOL! Have a great Monday down there. Please take care and stay safe!
Annulled in Denver? You mean there's no alternate route they could use to get to SF? Nothing like having a nationwide passenger rail network with no backups.
Good Evening Mr. Mike - Thanks for the #5 coverage. Am i understanding that AMTK is terminating the #5 @ DEN because it cant pass through the Rockies? Our wearher ia increased humidity today - the rain possibility was 50% today. I haven't seen any rain yet. Be safe & be well my friend. Signal Indication Papa Geoff - Here we go on a clear - Roger, on a clear, OUT 🚦🚦 30 comin' up Papa Geoff - Copy 30, thanks 🚦🚦
Good evening, Papa Geoff; Thanks for dropping by as well as the comments/question. It isn't the Rockies as much as Nevada and Donner Pass area in California. There is a lot of avalanche work being done west of Denver as well as some more wind surges that aren't helping. Beyond that is a major derailment near ELKO, NV of a grain train with many cars split and blown open. The work there was/is being hampered by force 3 and higher winds along with a lack of container for the grain that is now on the ground. Beyond that I have no idea why Denver. I think a look at the track profile west of Denver could help, in understanding why. Tomorrow's Zephyr will also terminate in Denver as per AMTRAK main web site data. No moisture here and humidity levels are typical with 19% over night and 9% daytime with northwest winds. Possibility of moisture here is less than 2% for the next several days. Oh well. LOL! I hope that you and yours have a great Tuesday. Please take care and stay safe!
Good morning Mike! Ha ha! Kelly and Mike in the morning! A little humor in the morning to start your day. So, Kelly won't be on 5 anymore? Is "3" a different shift or the Chief? Will they be back on 6 tonight? Should be enough turn around time. Do they require 8 or 12 ours in their industry? 46° at 7:50 this morning! It got to 73° yesterday, but, the wind was terribly gusty, so not comfortable for sitting on outside or riding or driving. Hope you have a great Monday! Thanks for 5! Jean
Good morning, Jean; I thank you for stopping by as well as the comments. From what Kelly said, I think he is moving to the SWC as we know it. They are trains 3 & 4. Just don't know which section he will be working. 12-hour shifts are the norm for them. Similar to truckers, federal law mandates at least 10 hours rest away from the job site. We had another round of dusty wind last night here. It was really rip-snorting around 7 PM for about an hour or so. Not as warm for the next several days with temps more seasonal in the upper 40s. Have a great Monday back there. Please take care and stay safe!
Hi Mike- Boy what a storm over Donner area.Stand still west of Reno. Sad about just going to Denver but I bet a nice ride-where do you get on for 6? Wind is blowing & more flare ups. I see you too yesterday in a wind /red flag warning. A week ahead of upper 60s& maybe rain Friday. TY for 5- & for the conductor on his new job.
Good morning, Cheryl; Thank you for dialing in along with the comments. People were long warned yet just had to do it instead of thinking safe. It happened in Colorado too. I hope that the fires down your way are coming under control. That was something to have a snow fall and the fires. Intense! I think the winds will stay relaxed for a few days, but this is the windy time of year and supposably the wet time of year. That hasn't happened here yet. We will see how that plays out up here. I am happy for Kelly and his new position with the SWC. I'd just like to know what section he will be working. Anyway, have a great Monday afternoon and evening down there. Please take care and stay safe!
I wonder why they couldn't go all the way to salt lake City? I mean if the thing in Elko happened there how come they couldn't go that far to salt lake? And that big huge storm is going to probably keep moving east.
Robert, have you studied the railroad map west o=from Denver to Salt Lake City? The Rocky Mountains are in the way and can get really nasty weather as well. That happened over this past weekend. Not a pretty sight in the high country of Colorado. And idiots still just had to drive and get stuck along I-70. Anyway, I hope that you have a great Monday afternoon back there. Please take care and stay safe!
Good morning and thanks for stopping by, jmaxxofficial; Yep. And we had many more inches of snow out here than we do now. Break out the snowmobiles and let's go! Have a great Monday. Please take care and stay safe back there!
Read the rail maps and track profiles of the area from Denver to Salt Lake City. Then add in the typical winter snow and windstorms. No. Not the 12 feet of snow that Donner Pass area got but the drifting snow we get across the Rocky Mountain region. If you have not experienced it, I recommend you don't. Anyway, I hope that you have a great Monday afternoon and evening. Please take care and stay safe!
Fantastic Mike have a great evening my friend
