    I NEVER agree with Charlemagne. But when he said we shouldn't use the "N" word because we haven't taken the power out of it or else we wouldn't get mad when non-black people use it --- I was so glad somebody else finally got it.

    • @Tree2K10
      @Tree2K10 6 років тому +100

      booginas Right, if black people don't want white people to use the word nigga, then they should stop using it among themselves. It's called "leading by example", a concept simple enough for a child to understand, so why are so many black adults not bright enough to get it?

    • @Tree2K10
      @Tree2K10 6 років тому +27

      Thomas Buchovecky I'm flattered that you've taken such an in depth interest in me, but none of your points suggest that I'm racist and I find it hilarious that you would make such an assumption given that I'm currently dating a woman of color and not my first.
      And I'm not sure what /pol/ is but I came here because I enjoy the TV series as one who views it as a satire to be humored rather than taken seriously.

    • @Tree2K10
      @Tree2K10 6 років тому +23

      funascanb If the word has such a bad "history", then why would black people want to use it among themselves? A prime example of the pot calling the kettle "black" and a self-fulfilling prophecy of which some black people apparently aren't bright enough to put two and two together.
      And if black people shouldn't have to "modify their behavior" as you put it, then white people shouldn't have to either, you're not "privileged"🤣

    • @Tree2K10
      @Tree2K10 6 років тому +19

      funascanb There's no need for you to feel bad for either of us because I personally never use the word and neither does she, we're both far too educated for such ratchetry, I was simply making a very valid point of which you're obviously incapable of comprehending.
      And if you're too "numb-skulled" to understand that white people would use the word far less often if they didn't hear black people constantly using it, then you're obviously suffering from a severe lack of common sense. Much like if one didn't want a child to use profanity, they wouldn't use it in their presence, otherwise the child would inevitably repeat what they hear, even if it were to slip out subconsciously. It's all so very simple that I'm sorry you're without the very most basic intelligence to see what is blatantly obvious.
      You may also wish to check the man in the mirror given that it's conversely you who's the troll since I was actually agreeing with the original comment while you were making an invalid attempt to attack my reply. Nice self projection and keep up the good work 🤣

    • @Tree2K10
      @Tree2K10 6 років тому +9

      funascanb Of course you were "disappointed" given that I pointed out your obvious lack of common sense, which suggests that your supposedly being a "Stanford student" would place you in remedial classes at best on a good day. And you "expected more from me"? HA! That's hilarious given that you've yet to interpret the most elementary facts I've provided thus far, and I'm sorry to admit that I can't say the same with regard to expecting more from you given that black people wanting something for nothing are a dime a dozen these days.
      And since the guy in the video stated why black people should stop using the word, it would seem that a so called Stanford student would possess the cognitive skills to comprehend, but obviously rather further confirming your learning impairment and since your subsequent reading difficulties prevented you from comprehending my earlier statement, no, my wife isn't black because I'm not married, as I indicated by the fact that I'm currently dating a black woman (and not my first). You can look up the difference between "married" and "dating" later and you're welcome, both for that tutorial and my aiding you to assimilate that I personally never use the word since I stated such previously.
      Meanwhile, it's clear you care more about "constraining the actions" of WHITE people than "correcting" BLACK people from engaging in hypocrisy.
      And yes, I do in fact watch the show with the woman whom I'm dating and she and I both view it as a satire rather than to be taken seriously, so perhaps you might work on your sense of humor in your remedial training as well and you can thank me once again later🙏

    Props to Logan for revealing that on such a huge platform. I'm adopted and never met my biological parents either and I don't even have a back story to tell. However, I remember revealing this in front of my English class for the first time ever in 11th grade while reading an assignment we had to do and I was terrified because people always associate adopted kids as unwanted or troubled and that's simply not the case. To my surprise, there were no cruel high school jokes, just supportive comments and tears. Respect to you Logan Browning.

      I give her so many props too.. and props to her mom... My little sister is adopted and we told her very early. since the adoption was an open one we have and continue to have contact with the biological family. to let her know that she was not rejected and very loved. then it also turned out that i am blood related to the biological mom, which has helped assisted the bond between me and my sister.

    • @Littlecoffeepot
      @Littlecoffeepot 6 років тому

      Adam Johnson I definitely agree! I definitely felt like I could relate to the identity confusion with Logan, I’m also adopted but from a white single mother and the only ever familiar face in my household was my twin brother, and we’re both Dominican. But I never felt like I didn’t belong to my siblings because we are all adopted from different places (Mexico, Japan, Dominican Republic), so I feel blessed to have such a radially ambiguous household. Although, growing up going to public school in a mixed town but being put into white friend groups, I always felt a disconnect with the white girls I was supposedly friends with and it always made me feel so self conscious about my own race and features. That is until I got to high school and started really appreciating that melanin magic and myself for who I was and getting into activism and fighting to stand up for other little girls and boys growing up in a predominantly white community feeling less than because they don’t look like everyone around them. Dear White People has been such an opening, freeing experience for me and I’m so happy shows like this exist because there are too many people in this world who a) have no regard for other people of color and their experiences and b) deny the struggles we go to on a day to day basis without even bothering to dig a little deeper and really see us. So thank you, Logan, Ashly and Antoinette for bringing this platform’s message to life 💛

    FACTS at the 11:30 mark! Black people who are adamant about marrying and building families with other black people are shamed yet interracial relationships are glorified and praised as "leveling up". I love the actress's (in the middle) honesty about wanting to marry a black man and why that's important, in a historical context, to her as a black woman.

    • @YumLemmingKebabs

      I'm mixed (not black) and I usually am pretty annoyed by these anti-miscegenation sentiments because I mean, who wouldn't be annoyed at being considered an abomination for how you were born, but Ashley managed to explain her perspective better than I've anyone I've ever seen. Usually they just shout about race traitors or purity and all that Nazi shit. She actually has an understandable and sympathetic reason.

    • @Nurib95

      @YumLemmingKebabs 6 років тому +7

      Sorry, what I meant was that I'm not part black. I opened with that so anyone reading what I said could take it for what it's worth. I don't have any black experience and the only way I have of understanding it is from other people's stories. I just have the experience of being mixed, and random strangers expecting you to be a certain way... Idealizing racial purity is just something the racists made up to justify their hate and oppression. But of course that's not what Ashley is talking about at all. She wants someone with shared experiences and culture.

    As a 28 year old white male, I don't see the point of even saying the word, but honestly when I was young and like 13- 14 years old hanging out with all my black friends cuz Ive grew up in a predominantly black poverty-stricken neighborhood, yeah being around my friends that are black I would say it and they didn't really care because they would kind of encourage me to say it just cuz they thought I was cool for being a white person, though it wasn't always the case, especially around older black people. I got checked a few times as a kid for saying it around the wrong people and it made me realize some shit real talk... but as I grew up I realized that I shouldn't say it even if they think it's alright just outta respect because a lot of the people that endured those true moments of pain from those words and the history behind it are still effected and still take it to heart .. most times but def not all, those that are, are a lot older than the younger generation and that is something you should respect their wishes for... as a white person I say bro, brotha, brother, homie, dawg etc... no reason to say the N word imo... truly even if you're black honestly, but if anyone does have the right it's a black person.. 👌✊✊🏽✊🏿

      I think there's a difference between someone who just doesn't want to date black women and someone who actively hates them, generalizes them and as you put it - "throw dirt on you and make you eat shit". The truth is, no race should have to take the latter.
      Dating preferences are may or may not be racist as no one is entitled to your personal space or love and affection. However, RELATIONSHIPS can be racist af when you have ethnic fetishizing going on.

    10:25 that's not a race thing that's a culture thing. I dated a Jamaican once & I'm Nigerian. I didn't kno his food too well and he didn't kno mine. If we went to a West Indian takeaway he'd have to tell me what the dishes were called. He'd never tried Egusi soup & a whole ton of other things I grew up on. This went from the food right down to me not knowing some Jamaican slang & we are both black. Don't get race & culture confused.

As a white person, its interesting to view how people from a different background view the world and the different challenges they face. from this interview as well as watching the show, I feel like everyone can learn a lot about how different communities tackle situations differently depending on their background, and how understanding and learning is the best way to bridge gaps in our society. Obviously its not all sunshine and rainbows, but people making an effort to understand others can go a long way.

So, when Logan was born and she wasn’t white, I’m guessing they found out the white partner wasn’t the real bio dad. And probably gave her up in order to salvage the relationship, assuming her white bio mom stayed with the white partner, boyfriend, whatever.

      think “they” would ever allow another Black Wall Street?
      “Black Wall Street has a special place in American history as a platform that paved the way for Black communities and businesses to thrive. Not too long ago Black men and women were not allowed to own property. We faced violence and freedom restrictions, such as being stripped of the right to vote, and endured other forms of racial segregation and race-based legislation. Despite this, a sense of community and faith bloomed among Black neighborhoods where isolation and segregation was the norm. Black people gave each other a place for community, safety, and economic support. A hundred years later, Black communities were thriving and economic strength was established. A perfect example of this progress was Black Wall Street, located in the Greenwood neighborhood of Tulsa, Oklahoma.
      Black Wall Street was a thriving community in Greenwood in the early 1900s. This was a community that had bustling Black owned businesses, theaters, schools, social health, and a strong distribution of wealth among its middle and upper classes. Reports estimate the community had more than 10,000 African American residents, and most of them were thriving. Black Wall Street was the epitome of a self-sustaining community and strength. Black people supported each other, which allowed for easier access to resources, savings, housing, jobs, education, and health. Black Wall Street was just one of many thriving communities in the United States, but it also became a site that would serve as an example of the violence and hatred that grew out of greed from white financial interests.
      ... The thought of second-class citizens receiving better economic opportunities than their white neighbors infuriated white Oklahoma residents. They retaliated against the Black community, spreading hatred and accusing them of crimes. Many white people were full of loathing and wanted to bring Black communities down.
      An accusation of sexual assault was the match that ignited the smoldering hatred and resentment of the thriving Black Wall Street community. The accusation inspired a lynch mob, which included nearly 2,000 Ku Klux Klan members who wanted to get “justice.” Everything came crashing down on Black Wall Street on May 31, 1921. In just 16 hours, police had arrested 60% of Black residents living in Black Wall Street. Mobs burned Black owned businesses and homes, and murdered hundreds of Black citizens. When Black men joined forces to protect their homes, they were ultimately driven out in fear for their lives. By today’s estimates, the dreadful and murderous 16 hours caused more than $30 million in damages. The residents of Greenwood were blamed for the death and destruction, and the government made it nearly impossible to rebuild.

    I guess it depends on the culture of the white guy as well. I know there are aspects of being black that as a white guy I won't understand. Having said that I grew up in South Carolina, with all of the same foods, grew up with all of the music, and was surrounded by majority black people throughout grade school. So while I didn't experience racism personally, I was no stranger to what it looked like because it affected a lot of my friends and I was witness to the racist side of certain white people because I was white, they thought I believed the same things.... they weren't careful of what they said around me. So when I was in college, now post college, It bothers me to see white people my age (late 20's) be so ignorant to some of the shit that comes out of their mouths, and how they use black people music, etc. as props.
    As far as the dating goes, I grew up around a lot of beautiful black women as well, so I think that's my natural preference, but since the conversation has changed about black women dating only black men it's kind of a bummer... selfishly for me. My point I guess was, there are other guys out there, while they don't know the full black experience, can love and understand a black woman.

    • @jsmooth8655
      @jsmooth8655 6 років тому +8

      Joshua Smith that's dope, I've never considered it from a white Male's perspective. I very recently was in the camp that as black people, dating white could work BUT there would always be a disconnect in the nuanced daily interactions. With you saying you never experienced it first hand, but still directly in front of you at times, opens up a completely different perspective on the topic.

Their voices do sound like those very focused Black women with white educational influences.

      lololee24 um on Wikipedia it says she’s black. She identifies as black. If it was the 1800s she’d be considered black and a slave she’s black even if it’s half end of discussion

    I loved this interview and getting to hear about the diverse experiences these black women have had. I hadn't realized how something as simple as hearing how differently they all speak and that not being called into question, could be so validating. It reminded me of times i've gotten the: "you talk white" and the "you're not black enough." Sentiments that for the most part, deny the fact that the black experience is a diverse one where location, environment, upbringing etc of course affect a lot of things, just like with any other group, including speech, because we're people- but even still, there is so much we share. These women are beautiful, strong and proud black women. The collective solidarity of being black in America, our history, triumphs, struggles, pains, joys, music, marches etc is something that we share, are touched by and celebrate in one way shape or another. Something we all have the potential to contribute to, honor and enrich. In whatever way that is. Love these actresses and their show. Sharing much love all around.

    I have a white significant other, and I'm proud to have a white significant other. It's not because I dont date black men, or are not attracted to black men. It's because of the actual connection that was developed over time. My choice could be based on the environments I was raised up in, however. My parents wanted the best for me and worked hard to put me in really good schools (which just so happened to have a predominantly white demographic). I began to change and like different genres of music that my family didnt listen to (i.e. hard rock, metalcore, indie, etc.) and other things that were considered "white shit". I liked going to wild concerts, I liked crazy hair, and I began to enjoy creating and making weird art. Eventually I began to feel ridiculed by my own cousins (and my own brother) once I started to embrace that new side of me. I dressed different, I spoke different, and I was more open. Black boys didnt understand me, but white boys didnt truly accept me either back then. Every crush I had in high school was with a white boy. It was almost like an unconscious attraction. I didnt understand it. Around that time was when I got the comments like "you dont look like most black girls" and "I'm not really into darker girls, but you're still pretty!". It wasnt until recently that I began to except myself and love all the sides of me, and I was lucky enough to find someone that accepted those sides. He just so happened to be WHITE lol. My decision on dating a white man which wasn't even based on race, I just met him and we formed a connection like normal people. I met him and he saw me for me. He saw my differences and it intrigued him. And frankly, I'm tired of hearing "oh, I can see you with a nice clean cut black man". I still get it all the time. Completely disregarding the possibilities of finding love outside of race. I understand that, for our community, it's important for our men and women to stick together, strengthen the roots, and be proud of ourselves. But it's possible for two people that are seemingly polar opposite to be completely accepting and curious about their different cultures. For the people like me...where does that leave us? What does that make us? I tend to feel more invalidated than congratulated in my own family.
