Weil McLain CGA4 Boiler Installation in an Apartment Complex!

- We yanked the old boiler due to a defective set of solenoid zone valves. We replaced the unit with a shiny new Weil McLain CGA4 with ALL the fixings. A job well done by the team!
Hello everyone! Thank you so much for the feedback on this video and all of our videos thus far.
We are loving the feedback in the comments! I just wanted to clarify a couple of things that were brought up about the boiler piping. The expansion tank orientation and location, the circulator proximity to the boiler and the lack of an air separation device. ALL of those things are addressed in section 3c/page 19 in the CGA manual. The boiler in this video is piped exactly as the manual specifies. This boiler does NOT require an external air separation device, due to the built in air scoop on the first section.
Hope that clears stuff up!
Nice work. Good to see craftsmen hard at work.
Tradesman
Thanks for the info, this variant atmospheric burner natural draft boiler has not been installed in our country for about 20 years. Since the late 90's only Gabrennwert, oil condensing, heat pump, pellet boilers, thermie solar systems are installed. Many greetings from a German heating, gas and water installer.
Nice works!
Looks amazing
Outstanding! Great job on that install. I'm out in Los Angeles and we do not see/have boilers out here, gas or oil.
Damn that’s a beautiful install
Thank you brother!
Your work is very neat, the soldering🏅
I’m not a big fan of boiler block air scoops and prefer a ‘pump away’ piping scheme, it just eliminates boiled off gases better. The drain at the expansion tank with isolation is a great idea to relieve pressure on a failed bladder swap. Yo😮 can never have enough isolation. Sure it costs more takes extra time at install, but the upside repairs can be done quicker when you don’t have to drain the whole system, refill it and baby sit till the water gets to temp.
All those fancy webstone valves, purges, etc, but y'all couldn't spring for an air eliminator?
Weil McLain boilers have an integrated air scoop on the first section. They do not require an air scoop/eliminator. One of the best features of a WM boiler. Shown in the manual.
@@valenzaplumbing an "air scoop" doesn't mean the air will coalesce. Air scoop and air eliminator aren't the same. You'll get air pockets in that system.
Also, all Weil-McLain manuals clearly outline an "separator" on their piping diagram. Wouldn't you know; pictures help those who can't read too good do gooder job for their customers.
@@zeroheat5787 I can read just fine, thank you. I can read well enough to see the “if used” printed right there in the book. Sure, an air separator could be used. But they are NOT required with this WM model. Air will not be a problem on this install or any what we do. I’ll stake my name on it.
excellent install. The only thing I would have done different is to use isolated k-clips.
nice job
for example it is connected in parallel it is connected in series from the beginning to the motor
nice install. is the purge vale on the expansion tank there to allow you to remove pressure from the tank for when/if replaced?
Yes. Webstone makes it just for this purpose. It allows us to isolate the tank from the system and drain tank in order to test/replace easily.
Nice work. How long the clamp seal in copper pipe lasts?
Nice clean installation ! This summer I plan on replacing my Weil GO 4 with a new GO 4, along with replumbing the current tree set up to a wall mount . I like your mounting rail system What manufacturer and whom sells it . Would appreciate that information.
Hey man love the videos, I have two weil McClain CGA 5 boilers to install any tips or advice is going to be my first solo excursion
Nice good work👍
Y’all must do some commercial work, never seen strut in residential. Good job
Thank you. Yes we do. About 30% of our work load is commercial.
I'm not a Pro Press fan, but I'm an old dude, LoL! But Nice Job!
What was the cost in Labor?
Do you guys have condensing boilers in the States?
We certainly do. Lots of them.
New York state, as well as most others, allow boiler and water heater pressure relief discharge pipe to discharge to an open waste receptor. 2020 NYS Residential Code M2002.4
They do. But there needs to be an air gap. There was not one in the previous install.
@@valenzaplumbing that is not what was said in the video, the video specifically calls for the discharge pipe to go onto the floor. No, it does not :) Anyway, the comments I make are for the community to keep it real. Way too much wrong info being posted on youtube. When tradesman do it people assume it's a fact. One has to be very careful when talking about some sort of code or requirement without double checking it first. Thanks for sharing the video!
@@biker55555 You are correct. I did not specify like I should have. That being said, the information in the video is true for most residential boilers. No one had a floor drain or indirect waste in their mechanical room. Unless you are talking big money, large homes. With that being said, the discharge goes on the floor.
Nice, but a lot of unnecessary copper used on the wall.
I wonder why it is so difficult to make a video from the beginning to wire a heater starting from the Breaker box
Not sure what you mean my friend.
Btu boiler? ⚠️🔥👋
IT LOOKS TO ME THAT THE EXPANSION TANK IS ON THE RETURN???
You are correct. As long as the feed water enters at the point of no pressure change (ie. at the expansion tank connection) and the tank is located on the suction side of the circulator, the location of the tank doesn’t matter. We install our tanks and feed water on the return because it makes purging the boiler easier and removes more air when starting from an empty boiler.
@@valenzaplumbing I HAVE BEEN PLUMBING FOR 40YEARS AND YOU DO NOT PLACE EXPANSION TANKS ON THE RETURN...NOT ONLY MY OPINION BUT ENGINEERING AND DESIGNERS WILL TELL YOU THE SAME..THE EXPANSION IS AT THE FEED FOR THE MOST PART AND SHOULD BE DEALT WITH THERE..NOT ON RETURN LESSER TEMP WATER
@@johngallati8164 Thank you for your feedback. We have been installing boilers for over 50 years. Every one of them with the expansion tank and feed water on the return, in this exact spot. The tanks live a happy life and the systems all function perfectly, and they will, indefinitely. There are plenty of piping diagrams showing this setup, Caleffi and the Amtrol engineering handbook to name a couple. Happy holidays.

Circ pump is too close to top of boiler
Thanks for your feedback. There is no specified “minimum distance” that the circulator has to meet. This install is done exactly to Weil McLain’s specifications according to their manual.
@@valenzaplumbing
Per page 18-19 you are correct.
It could be on the supply or return.
