    ◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇◇
In this episode, we spend the day with Manao Kagawa, a young shogi professional player. Shogi, that we can simply describe as Japanese chess, is a Japanese board strategy game that shares the same roots as chess. Kagawa started playing in 3rd grade and turned pro when she was still 15 years old.
As it is a traditional game, players, especially professionals, wear a kimono when playing. Our first stop with Kagawa will be at Shirataki Gofukuten, a kimono shop that traditionally provides kimonos for shogi players since more than 150 years. It also organizes a yearly shogi tournament for women, where the winner is awarded with a kimono.
We will then head towards the Sendagaya area to the Hatonomori shrine, which is a shrine dedicated to shogi. Many shogi players gather here at the start of each year for a traditional ceremony where they pray to the shogi gods.
Close to the shrine lies the Shogi Kaikan, which are the headquarters of the Japan Shogi Association and the main practice center for most shogi players, including Kagawa. As a pro, she now plays on the upper floors of the building, where each of her game results is archived and contributes to her rank.
Our last stop will be at the Jinro room in Shibuya, one of the rare spaces in Tokyo dedicated to the Werewolf game, one of Kagawa’s passions. She will tell us more about her vision about games and the importance they play in her life.

Rumor has it that if your charm is high enough, you can find her playing shogi at a church and if your drive for shogi is good, she'll offer to be your playing partner.

Shogi was opened to women only 40 years ago. But they have a status. Like at the professional level for what I got, you are all equal. They keep track of every game you play and all. While in chess, women have always been allowed to play but there's always distinctions between male and female players. For example there's a women grand master title that doesn't require as much as what it takes to become a male grand master. So basically saying women are not smart enough to be GMs but let's give them something. So the WGM was born which requires way less elo.
In a way respect for Japan. For being traditional and allowing women to not be put down by a title. And remember shogi is way harder than chess. So those are real geniuses. You even have to go be careful cause your own pieces that were taken by your opponent can be used against you. Don't get me wrong. Chess also takes your whole life of studying to even achieve national master. Which is the lowest of the titles. But imagine you blunder your queen. And suddenly it's used against you.
Unfortunately Japan is so tradition based. And want to keep their culture for themselves only that shogi is basically a Japan exclusive. And yes I know none Japanese people know how to play but compared to chess that didn't mind leaving Europe. It's nothing. Tournaments in chess are well paid. 200k for winning the us open. And even I heard that GMs have a salary.
Anyway I hope it goes global one day. Also Go should be global. It's pretty cool. And I have no idea how to play.
